Seattle Supersonics Uniform Question

Recommended Posts

You know, I have a question, regarding the late, lamented Seattle Supersonics (come back! :(😞 When did they unveil their 1980s era duds that they wore from 1979 to 1995?

At the start of the 1978-79, they wore these sets that were nothing special:

However, by the time the season ended with their NBA Finals victory, they were in their most popular getup:

So, with that said: When in the 1978-79 season did the Sonics make the uniform switcheroo?

They didn't. They carried over the same road uniforms from the previous season whilst adding new home unis in 1977-78. They added matching road unis for the 1978-79 season, just in time to win the title.

Interesting sidenote - the previous uniform set was introduced when Bill Russell took over as coach - he wanted the unis to resemble the Celtics' uniforms!

I researched this a bit a few months ago. The 70s NBA uniforms are fascinating to me because of how much they changed along with their quirky design elements. The New Orleans Jazz, Golden State Warriors, Houston Rockets and Philadelphia 76ers all have quirks to their uniform timeline that I find fascinating.

What @discogod said, but here's a visual.

This was the 1976-77 set.

And then this was the 1978-79 set ...

So, the 1977-78 season was a transitional year for the Sonics uniform-wise. You don't see that happen anymore, teams making a partial uniform change in a season (and I mean changing one set of uniforms).

Don’t forget the Bucks matching up a block Bucks script on the home and a cursive Milwaukee on the away only to reverse to a cursive Bucks on the home and a block Milwaukee on the away in 75-76

From these pictures you can notice that for 78-79 season Sonics tweaks logo on home shorts.

Another one was the Utah Jazz between 1983-1986. The transition was over an extra season compared to the Sonics, but I find it interesting nonetheless. #logonerd

This was the combo for 1983-84

^ The difference is the "UTAH" in the logo wasn't seen on the home white suit until 1986. What took them so long?

I've never seen that white skyline/green sky version. I like it.

NBA uniform history seems to be the least researched of the big four, always cool when people do the legwork on stuff like this.
