Through the years:

We love brown/yellow = brown/orange

We still love brown/yellow = navy/orange

We still love brown/yellow = navy/sand

We still love brown/yellow = navy/yellow

Oh, navy/yellow isn't bad = navy only

Can we just go back to brown/yellow = _______

Honestly wouldn’t be surprised if we get brown only. Like, just brown and white. Halfway at best seems like a very Padres kind of thing to do. “You wanted brown you got brown lol”

It’s been stated in this thread that brown is a package deal with yellow, so the former will come with the latter.

Padres brown has only been loved recently.

I still think their best look is navy/orange.

I’d normally eviscerate this suggestion, but I can see your point. It’s partially a reaction to the trashing of the initial Petco Park set (the one with the khaki road set) in favor of the “navy only” look, with the dumping of navy/yellow only exacerbating the situation. The team’s decisions have invigorated the consistently-present pro-brown/yellow fans, with more joining their number.

The 1998 look has some decent elements (the cap logo and the updated Swingin’ Friar), but navy/orange is already handled better by the Astros and Tigers (and Mets, just with royal instead of navy). It should stay as an alt for navy fans (e.g., @bosrs1 and those whose fondest memories of the team were in navy).

So, are the Indians just ditching the Chief Wahoo patch and caps and substituting them with that awful block C hat? If so, they’re going to go from pretty boring but still ok look, to the absolute most boring and forgettable look in the entire league. It drops them from somewhere near the lower middle of the pack in terms of looks to the very bottom, worst set in the league bad.

As to the former, yes.

The latter?  We don't yet know.

That's the problem I have with this whole thing.  You want to get rid of Wahoo?...fine...I can live with that, but then it has to be replaced by an entirely new logo.  The C itself won't cut it.

Do they think the block C is a strong enough logo as is, or is there a theory that it’s better optics to keep everything around as-is apart from Wahoo? I gotta say, I don’t get it. Not like they haven’t had plenty of warning that Wahoo will go away so there was plenty of time to work up a rebrand. (Plus my hot take is that the Indians base look is very dated anyway.)

Even fans like myself who like the block C agree. It's a fine mark but on its own... not enough.

The Indians script and the cursive I are both beautiful and well-known parts of the current identity they should put more focus on.

For next year at least, I'd like to see the I replace Wahoo on the home cap, like this but with the red bill/squatchee.

Then add a white stroke to the block C for the road cap like this but with the current navy bill.

NEW-Cleveland-Indians-SGA-7-6-18-Block-C

Then you have the all-star patch on the sleeve for next year with some time to explore other patch options.

I think having a cursive font home look and a block font road look could work as a clear identity. Might look better to switch to red with a navy stroke though and go back to this old set (sans Wahoo and the creepy mannequin arms):

In fact, yes, let's do that navy inside/red outside piping on both jerseys cuz that :censored: is nice! The navy alt can swap it for white.

Except this isn't really true. People didn't really start talking about brown until 2009 or so, when they stripped the team down to be sold. And even then, yellow didn't really reach a consensus till they introduced the fauxbacks. The most popular secondary color has always come from the throwback they wore most recently.

As a cap logo?  Sure it does.

As a primary logo?  Maybe not.  But primary logos are so 20th century, nobody has a primary logo anymore.

I've got a feeling in a year or two the Indians will just have a roundel logo featuring the C as the primary and sleeve patch. Something like this.

Eh, that wouldn't bother me.  Few clubs really need a more complicated logo than their cap logo.

It'd bother me in that it is so generic and just unoriginal. The "Angels Baseball" roundel with the A is another example. Give me something that took more than two minutes to create.

Part of me wouldn’t mind Cleveland dropping the “Indians” script from their home uniform in favor of the “Cleveland” block wordmark. It doesn’t work well for the Texas Rangers, but it’d be effective for Cleveland (emphasizing city over controversial nickname/downplaying the nickname as much as possible).

Dumping the navy jerseys would also be a good idea, if only because they’re associated with the team’s numerous choke jobs in the playoffs (the nineties teams, 2016, and 2017). I’d prefer a red jersey for them, with the city wordmark.

Yeah, but for a logo that’s almost never seen?  I wouldn’t want it on the sleeves, but if they need something for the occasional newspaper ad or charity sponsorship announcement it’s fine.

Even though I'm in favor of a name change, that'd be a huge hit to their look. The script Indians is gorgeous and maybe the last unique and cool element left in their identity. Switching to block Cleveland on the home AND roads along with just the block C caps would be terrible.

Oh, it wouldn’t be a permanent solution AT ALL. It’s a way to ease the transition away from the name and to brainstorm an appropriate replacement/focus group several options (logo variants/color scheme changes or redistribution/etc.).

Why don’t the Indians just pull a 1997 All Star Game logo and use their wordmark as their primary logo? It was even on their TATC jerseys

If the Indians were smart (I don’t think they are), they would take this as an opportunity to ditch everything and start over. Their color palate is miserably over saturated, their name is hokey at best, offensive at worst, and their extended history, while lengthy, isn’t prestigious enough to make it a huge loss to anyone.

Cleveland Spiders/Spinners/Something new/ect FTW.

Again, I'm in favor of a name change, but it's really easy to say that it wouldn't be a huge loss to anyone when you aren't a fan of that team.

Spiders just doesn't work for me, not sure how Indians comes off hokey while Spiders passes the smell test. I've seen solid logo concepts but as a name I don't love it. BUT, I do essentially agree that they should just move forward. My hope is that they'd either try to keep a jersey set that provides continuity between identities while changing names/logos OR they go completely different and try to go for a color scheme that is unique both in MLB and the city of Cleveland (none of that "Baseball Browns" crap).
