Miami Marlins 2019 Rebrand

Whether you agree with that phrase or not I think it shows what this new ownership and front office is trying to do and that's to reshape and rebrand this damaged franchise's image and culture towards the present and the future and not just rehashing its past.

 

He also used this phrase when speaking of everything from ballpark aesthetics to food and concessions and not just the logos and uniforms. 

 

I give them major credit for taking that path. 

Maybe it's because I'm from Broward but I don't see these shades of blue and red representing Miami culture "today" any better than teal would.

 

I don't hate these colors but they are surely not what would have come to mind if prompted.

 

I guess it's an eye of the beholder thing. Miami is a colorful city which is why I don't want to see too much black.

 

Also, while I embrace the changes they are making to the ballpark and want the HR sculpture gone, all they are doing is making the park more cookie cutter. The dining options might feel more Miami but they are eliminating most of the local character at least in an aesthetic sense.

 

So I don't entirely buy what Bowers is selling here. But in the end, the branding is not important because it captures the culture of Miami but rather because it helps us forget Loria.

It's a fine line because everyone swears they hated the sculpture and the lime green walls and the colorful logo yet now they get rid of those things and people are gonna call them cookie cutter or whatever. It's either stick with baseball traditions and be called boring or purposely buck traditions and be made fun of so I dunno what to say.

The stadium always looks so dark and cavernous. Not as bad as the airport hanger in St. Petersburg but somewhere along the same lines of Miller Park. Removing the sculpture (which I hated) and changing color(e)s of the walls probably won't change that.

I think it has a lot to do with lighting being focused entirely on the field and background structures receiving minimal lighting giving it a dimmer look. In a open air stadium the background is stark black in areas where there isn’t seating. 

 

The Trop’s lighting is closer to ground level than other ballparks around the outfield. I remember dealing with the glare throughout the game.

Tropicana feels a lot more like a basketball/hockey arena than it does a baseball stadium, which is fitting because it’s basically just an oversized basketball/hockey arena anyway.

I understand that, but I suppose I'm someone who's at least asking them to be consistent in their rhetoric. Because they aren't following the "either/or" you mention here.

 

I've seen the renderings of the planned ballpark changes. They look nice but have the aesthetics of almost any other MLB park (how many people have you seen mention Yankee Stadium upon noticing the new wall color so far?) and there's nothing in them that reflects "Miami of today."

 

I think they could benefiting from softening their "MIAMI (!)" marketing ploy just a tad. On social media you can still see that there's a lot of 90s nostalgia among the casual fans that they need to win back. And there are plenty of fans in Broward and Palm Beach who go to less games now on account of how much harder it is to get to the ballpark.

 

At times I view their attempts at pandering to the Latino community to be just a little desperate and they need to acknowledge that having a stable organization and winning culture are more important than anything else. One has to imagine that simply trading Realmuto this offseason (whether it's necessary or not makes no difference to most fans who are likely to visit the ballpark) will easily negate any positive buzz the new branding generates. So I agree with David Samson at least partially. He's an idiot for not owning up to his regime's awful management, but he's right in saying this is all window dressing in the end.

Hell yea its window dressing just like all of Samson's crap in the disastrous 2012 rebrand. Derek Jeter hasn't said this rebrand is gonna fix the on field product but he's clearly working on that. I wouldn't worry about the Realmuto situation because people paying attention know that Realmuto refuses to sign an extension so trading him isn't on Jeter to blame.

But that's just it - the people that DON'T pay attention are the ones they're targeting in general and with moves like a rebrand.  They'll see a rebrand and think "oh cool!"  And then a few weeks later "Realmuto traded to Team X" and they'll think it's just more of the same

Which is why I was surprised this rebrand happened so soon. There are 2 or 3 more years of misery and trading players that don’t fit into the plan for ‘21/‘22. Ride it out with the current look and rebrand when the team is ready to compete like the 2008 Rays.

But you can't expect everyone who might be buying tickets to Marlins Park to be closely paying attention. Diehard fans who are up on all of that are always a minority within a fanbase. I am not going to blame Jeter if he trades Realmuto, but most of his marketing demographic will. They absolutely need to trade him IMO, but most of the positive buzz that is stirred up tomorrow will be negated down the road again once that trade occurs.

Your expectations for casual fans might be too high then. And that's totally fine for casual fans to be that way. Most people who are likely to attend a game at Marlins park don't know Realmuto's attitudes about the new ownership, let alone the granular details of MLB club controlled contracts.

That's roughly the color palette I wished the Winnipeg Jets would use (medium blue, sky blue, red, grey). Kinda get a Dan Le Batard vibe from the whole thing, though.
