The_Admiral
Also reportedly headed to the Dodgers are shortstop Jeter Downs Not to be confused with Downs Jeter, which sounds like a Nick Mullen character ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

That's the only rationale I can come up for making this deal from LA's perspective. Kemp, Puig, and Wood are worth far more in talent than whatever they're getting back from Cincy. Homer Bailey will likely become the game's most expensive middle reliever. But the move also takes the Dodgers under the luxury tax and the Dodgers front office is not one to give up something for nothing. Harper is more valuable than the package they sent to Cincy. If this move enables them to sign Harper, you make this trade ten times over. It's still a big if, but if there's a front office capable of pulling a move like this off, it's theirs. If they don't land Harper, my guess is they'll likely end up with Kluber or someone else along those lines. For the Reds, it allows them to add some Major League caliber talent. Alex Wood instantly becomes the team's best starter and they now have two solid bats in Kemp and Puig to bolster the lineup. The two prospects I'm seeing they're sending to LA are at least a year from being Major League ready, so it shouldn't be any major blow to their farm depth. Sport
I’m pumped! They got some actual personalities and fun players and got rid of the worst contract on the team and one of my least favorite athletes to ever play for one of my teams. Clearly the Reds got tired of playing to empty seats and getting upstaged by a minor league soccer team. That was a long five years without Major League Baseball. I’m really glad they decided to bring it back.
Dilbert
The Reds finally dumped Homer and finally got a good trade. We've only been waiting forever for this to happen. Signature intentionally left blank
Dynasty
Maybe there will be something worth watching in Southwestern Ohio. And Harper is totally going to LA, but watch them still not win anything with him.

FiddySicks
The Giants REALLY need to do some kind of Comiskey Park type deal with their park already. This is the fourth time in less than 20 years they’ve changed the name, and I really do feel it kind of messes with the luster of the place a bit. It’s probably the only thing I genuinely dislike about that place. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.sfgate.com/giants/amp/San-Francisco-Giants-home-now-called-Oracle-13522180.php On 11/19/2012 at 7:23 PM, oldschoolvikings said: She’s still half convinced “Chris Creamer” is a porn site.) shstpt1
So... Tulo to the Yankees was bad enough, but now they are about to sign DJ LeMahieu, to an already full infield of Didi Gregorious, and their homegrown Torres and Andujar. The only redeeming quality that the Yankees had in my opinion the past year or so is that they had finally seemed to start going the route of using the talent from their own system. Now we are back to the over inflated free agent contracts.

Now down to just Philly and the White Sox with the Phillies being the clear favorite.

DG_ThenNowForever
I enjoyed reading this piece of "collusion" on Deadspin: https://deadspin.com/baseball-doesnt-need-collusion-to-turn-off-the-hot-stov-1831644811 The crux is that, more so than basketball, the economics nerds have taken over baseball administration to maximize value of player contributions relative to the overall value of baseball clubs. If a win is worth $1.5 million in value, you'll never win enough to justify a $300 million contract to Bryce Harper relative to other options. You can still make good money as a major league player, but it feels like absent a work stoppage, player salaries may have plateaued. I guess if you're a pro athlete in the US, your best option is still to be born 6'8" with a jumpshot. 1 hour ago, ShutUpLutz! said: and the drunken doodoobags jumping off the tops of SUV's/vans/RV's onto tables because, oh yeah, they are drunken drug abusing doodoobags
The Six
When the owners in other leagues collude to bring down players' salaries, they just call it a salary cap. Baseball pretty much has that right now anyway so they might as well make it official so we don't have to go through this nonsense every offseason. I guess if you're a pro athlete in the US, your best option is still to be born 6'8" with a jumpshot. I have an article planned in relation to this, but if I was a GM of a team, that team wouldn’t use the free agent market for anything more than adding a plug in starter. When you have guys like Javy Baez and Carlos Correa only making around $5 million, I don’t see the point. You’re not going to be able to match that type of bang for the buck in the free agent market, so why even try? Sign a veteran free agent for market value, and best case scenario you get the return on investment you’re hoping for. Worst case scenario, he gets hurt and the club is just out whoever many millions it spent on signing him with nothing to show for it. This is why you’re seeing big market teams like the Yankees, Dodgers and Cubs dumping money into their farm systems like never before. Try to keep up with small market teams who know how to develop young talent almost strictly through free agency and you’ll likely end up like the Giants. Most players peak between the ages of 24 and 26. Not 29 and 31. That’s always been true, the only difference between now and 30 years ago is that you have teams actually acting out on it. Not just planning on, but banking on young unproven talent being there to save the day, and teams have won the World Series under this rationale. The fact you can pay them less than the vets makes it that much more appealing.
DG_ThenNowForever
Appealing but also odious. I don't like modern baseball. Teams should play to win titles but instead most are operated as revenue generators. It makes me feel like a chump to pay for an MLB game; if owners don't care why should I? 1 hour ago, ShutUpLutz! said: and the drunken doodoobags jumping off the tops of SUV's/vans/RV's onto tables because, oh yeah, they are drunken drug abusing doodoobags
BBTV
1) in theory, I don't see how a salary cap is "collusion", since they almost always go up and guarantee the players an agreed-upon percentage of revenue. 2) if a "win is worth $1.5M in value" - how do you determine that value? Would it be worth more for a team with more revenue sources than say for the Royals? Could it be that it is worth it to sign a $300M player if your wins are worth more? 3) players peak between 24 and 26 - I'd love to see the stats behind that. Baseball is the one sport where it seems like players don't peak until later. Hell - the two top FAs, Machado and Harper, are 26 and every story is about how they're only entering their primes. You've forgotten more about baseball than I know so I feel weird calling you out, but this doesn't sound right to me. Also - players take way better care of themselves now than back in the 90s and earlier, so I think it's reasonable that primes are later now and careers longer. Aren't baseball players called up later than players in other sports? Maybe that's old fashioned and teams need to trust younger guys.
