How are the White Sox betting against themselves with Machado? The White Sox also has plenty of money to spend.

As of right now they’re rumored to be the only team to have offered any money. Yankees and Phillies have just offered years.

That makes no sense, if you are offering Years you are surely adding a price tag to those years

For every one transaction a team makes, they discuss ten others than never come to fruition.

That’s about the same percentage of confidence I apply to all of these contract rumors.

Some thoughts.

-Moose getting in: good. The likely outcome that he will go in as a Yankee: not so good.

-Glad Rivera got 100% first. Seemed like a standup guy, completely unhittable at his peak with basically one pitch. Glad to see he got it before Jeter.

One of the best to ever play in Seattle finally gets in... Congrats, Edgar.

We can't all agree on his induction, but like many, I am happy to see Edgar finally getting his due credit.

As for the others, Mariano finally ends the nobody getting 100% of the vote streak which was always stupid. I don't know how one objects to Willie Mays or Babe Ruth being in the Hall, but people did.

Roy Halladay took over the title of "most dominant right-handed American League pitcher" from Pedro Martinez and held onto it for several years before winning another Cy Young award in Philadelphia. That's enough for me.

Mussina's argument against was never something I understood. The guy was top five in ERA as many times as Bob freakin' Gibson and people were trying to claim he wasn't all that dominant. Give me a break.

Clemens and Bonds continue their slight upward tick, which reflects more negatively on the Hall than it does them IMO. The Hall needs to induct these people to validate themselves as an institution more than either Bonds or Clemens need to be inducted to prove the greatness of their careers.

Schilling's omission also falls under the category of flat out silly. Yes I rather slam my foot into a door than being alone in a room with this guy, but that doesn't take away from the fact that he was one of the dominant right-handers who ever played, and is arguably the greatest postseason pitcher in baseball history. The guy was money in multiple big game outings for the Phillies, D'Backs, and Red Sox during his career. Short of a Joe Paterno or an O.J. Simpson situation, I can't deprive someone of a historical achievement like the Hall of Fame based solely on moral grounds.

I am disappointed to see Berkman and Oswalt kicked off the ballot after just one vote. Regardless of how you feel about their HOF candidacy, they deserved more than one ballot to make their case. To me, this is the direct result of stingy voters taking way too long to make decisions on guys like Edgar and Mussina who should have been in long ago without much debate.

Oswalt for his part will join the ranks of Kevin Brown, David Cone, and Bret Saberhagen for Hall of Fame debate worthy starters that never even given a chance by the writers.

So Bill Ballou actually decided to cast a ballot and didn't want to be that guy who didn't vote for Rivera, or in his case abstain as he claimed he would in December 2018.

I’ve read that article at least five times and still don’t understand his point.

The save rule is dumb, that’s why I didn’t vote for Mo.

I have no idea what one has to do with the other but to teach their own I guess.

Halladay will go in as a Blue Jay, but had his most significant moments and became a HOFer in Phila.  I wonder if the Phillies will honor their HOF policy and retire his number, even though he only wore it for parts of 4 seasons and will almost certainly not have their cap on his plaque.

I agree 99% with his argument, but the 1% I don't agree with is that Rivera shouldn't be a HOFer.  I hate how the save rule has created a stat that has essentially created a position and created stars (and IMO cost teams games since they're holding their "best" reliever for possible save situations rather than pitch him when it's really needed).  That being said, not voting for Mariano Rivera is indefensible... of course writers are among the most full of themselves pricks on the planet and feel the need to enforce unwritten rules and "protect" the hall and other BS that results in some not voting for KGJr.

A reliever with a 4.50 ERA has at least a 50/50 of closing out a game in the ninth given a one run lead with nobody on base.

This is how you can have a 5.07 ERA and still lead the league in saves as Joe Borowski did in 2007. Granted this is an extreme example, but I would put the overall value of saves as a measure of talent at near zero.

But it’s a completely separate argument. I get it being made for Lee Smith, but nobody has ever disputed Rivera’s save total as being due to anything else than a lights out reliever for the better part of at least 16 seasons.

I viewed it as a straw man argument. He’s disproving a point nobody was making.

Edit: Has now come out that Ballou voted for Rivera after all.

I still think that when Bonds and Clemens do eventually get elected, because they eventually will, they should both just pull a TO. Thanks but no thanks to your dinky little over glorified museum.

Anyone else think that Bonds and Clemens get elected in 2021? There are no first ballot hall of famers in that class and I don't see any other names still kicking around who have a shot at getting elected besides maybe Schilling. If Bonds and Clemens don't get in, it could be one of those years where nobody gets elected unless the veteran's committee nudges someone in. But given what happened with Baines and Smith, they will probably find someone even if BBWAA doesn't.

The guys who got elected today are all deserving, but the Harold Baines gaffe is still dampening my enthusiasm. Going forward I am going to have difficulty seeing Hall of Fame status under the light I once did.

To be honest? The HOF has elected pretty questionable players more than a few times. Rabbit Maranville? Phil Rizzuto? Bruce Sutter?

Not at all saying that’s an excuse for them to keep doing it by any means—they really shouldn’t—but my perception of Hall of Fame status tanked a bit just by looking at the roster they already had years back. They do get many right of course, but questionable picks have happened for years.
