If there’s any player out there who fits the Cardinals mold like an absolute glove, it’s Goldy. I said it a page or so ago, but he’s the ultimate safe (boring) white dude. Cares about absolutey nothing other than baseball and it reflects with his play on the field. You’re never gonna get a controversial quote out of that guy, let alone any type of scandal. All you’re going to get is pure production.

The only guy who may be more white and boring in baseball is Buster Posey.

Well, we'll wait and see if the Cardinals do "Christians' Day" again. You might get a controversial quote out of him then, given his religious background. It'd be a bit like when Matheny said:

Quote

Matheny lauded his players for doing something he seems to believe is controversial, casting Christians as what Hall described as “an afflicted minority,” saying “for them to share something that isn’t politically correct anymore, something that isn’t publicly acceptable, for them to stand up here and to share… takes a great amount of courage.”

Yeah, :censored: Matheny. I'm glad the Cardinals fired his ass.

Yeah Matheny is a :censored:ing dumbass.

I went to a D Backs game a few years ago not realizing it was “Christian/The Most Oppressed Majority In America” Day and they drug out Goldy to talk about his faith. He actually seemed pretty uncomfortable with it, though. I don’t think he’s exactly militant about it or anything. Maybe he’s become more bold/unhinged since then, though. I couldnt say.

Oh, Switchfoot was there, too.

Looks like Goldy to the Cards is happening. Damn that’s a good pickup. D Backs are idiots.

Yeah, I don't get this one from Arizona's perspective.

Don't even bother to hold onto him until the deadline or anything. Why would you do that when you can just kill all hopes of a playoff birth before the season even begins?

Even if it winds up being a one-year rental for St. Louis it's hard to see how they lose here. They didn't give up anything that can't be replaced and in return, they got a potential future HOFer first baseman still in his prime.

Arizona for their part gets what amounts to a grab bag of prospects that 28 other teams could have probably matched if not beaten. They got flat out fleeced here.

I can attest that this is 100% accurate.

Anybody else hear former Marlins President David Samson on with Dan LeBatard immediately after his non-disclosure agreement ended last week? He talked about the Padres fake medical files and how AJ Preller  shouldn't be a GM and acknowledges his faults with the Marlins.

I absolutely HATE when this kind of thing happens.

It is interesting to hear the poster boy of front office nepotism offer his opinion on who should and who shouldn't be a GM. Samson was handed the title of Executive VP of the Expos when he was 31 despite having no prior experience working in baseball at any level in any capacity.  I wonder how that happened?

Preller did have an issue when he dealt Pomeranz to the Red Sox. The Padres did hide medical information, and it cost him about a month's pay, and he is on double secret probation for the rest of his career. But that story is also more than two years old at this point, and the Sox seem to be doing just fine regardless. Old news, move on.

But to say the Padres took the time and energy to develop fake medical records to distribute to other teams sounds like a bunch of BS. And considering the source, I'm going to say it likely is BS.

I would be shocked if Samson ever works for an MLB team again. His reputation around the league is comparable to Eric Cartman's at South Park Elementary. Players don't like him. Other executives don't like him. Nobody is going to confuse his track record for Theo Epstein or Billy Beane when it comes to evaluating talent. The Marlins front office was a constant source of leaked information during his tenure and Samson himself would cause at least one PR fire a year with his mouth.

Top all that off with a "do you know who my dad is" disposition and it should be pretty evident as to why no team wants to interview him for a front office position, let alone hire him.

He may make for an entertaining radio guest, and there may be some truth to what he is saying. But I wouldn't consider him a reliable source of information. This is not someone who is trying to "tell it like it is." This is someone with an ax to grind, and he's going about it the way a 16-year-old would after a bad breakup.

Cubs fun it the sun is over. I hope you enjoyed your moment. This is the Cardinals’ division. Same with bum ass Cain and the Brewers. Goldy is going to go scorched earth on you this year. Be afraid.

Cardinals are easily winning 95 this year. And you’re wrong it you think otherwise. Gold(y) standard! Oh and Andrew Miller is coming.

Should we expect signings at the winter meetings, or are the Harper and Machado sagas going to drag on into '19?  There's been surprisingly few (if any) stories about meetings between teams and agents, or player visits, or anything of the sort.

Harper has been visiting teams throughout the offseason and I would be surprised if he didn’t sign before the meetings were over. More than one team has a deal ready for him to sign tomorrow that would be in the ballpark of what he’s asking for.

He will likely set the market for Machado and company.

With Manny, I don’t know. I’ve heard $35+ and I’ve heard teams don’t want to go above $25. He’ll likely settle for something in the middle, but whatever deal Harper gets is likely to affect what Machado will get.

Hall of Famer Harold Baines.

Wtf. What an absolute mess.

Yeah I don’t get that one and neither does anyone else.

Poor Dale Murphy has two MVP’s. Harold Baines only placed in the top ten once.

This is one of at least 200+ examples I could site of players more deserving than Baines. I just don’t have all night.

I was going to say that Baines isn't a Hall of Famer IMHO.  I'll never be convinced he is either.  Hall of Very Good, sure but Hall of Fame no.

The cynic in me thinks this was done to facilitate the future election of those who primarily played the DH position against the argument of "but they didn't play in the field."

I never saw him play, but know him primarily from collecting baseball cards in the 80s.  I was really surprised to learn that his number was retired while he was still an active player - and that he came back to the CHW twice more.  I used to collect all the cards, read all the SIs, watch TWIB every week, and he was never one that was talked about as an impact player - ever.  I just checked his stats, and was shocked to see he had 2,800 hits.  That's a ton of hits - I'm sure there's a lot of HOFers with fewer - but I don't think that even a single one actually mattered.

Lol, the Hall of Fame is so desperate to keep guys like Bonds and Clemens out that they’re using the Veterans Committee to elect guys like Harold freaking Baines. Did he ever even come close to the 75% needed in the regular vote?

What a joke that that whole thing has become. The Hall of Fame is nothing more than a glorified museum, and them pulling this kind of garbage is the absolute worst kind of revisionist history. Does anyone actually take that place seriously any longer?

Also, Baines’ 2,800 hits came over the course of like 22 seasons. That’s kind of awful when you look at it like that.
