Tampa Bay Times Sports editorial: Save us from the Buccaneers’ hideous uniforms

I have REALLY REALLY bad news for you.. not everyone hated it. You became a fan when the pewter was introduced and that is ok, but to lie about it is obnoxious. Pewter and red is now associated with losing.. because it has been almost 20 years since the Buccaneers have been of any real threat. We are in the 80's-early 90's level of sucktitude.. Hopefully you will jump off the plank when they head back to some orange and ditch that awful pewter. Please, no one should listen to this guy and let him tell you how real Buccaneers fans felt about the look.

Pretty sure he said he became a fan in 1994

This was a perfect look...

You mean except for the 20 years of losing.

This assumes the throwbacks replicate the old numbers exactly. It's possible they thickened the black outlines to make the silver number road look kosher.

@imawalkingcorpse this board has an edit function. There is no need to post six times in a row.

The original silver numbers had a thick black outline.  The thin outline came later.

The throwbacks have had both.

I love the look, but personally I think they really need the thicker numbers to distinguish the silver from white.

They’ve had much more success in the pewter and red than they ever had in the creamsicles. They weren’t just bad from the early 80’s to mid 90’s they were putrid on an all new level. And perhaps your not old enough to remember but at the time of the change most buc fans were sick and tired of the creamsicles.

The red and pewter is now approaching 20 years of losing.

It’s been 15 years since winning the super bowl, last went to playoffs in 07 (winning their division just as they did in 05) so it’s been 11 years of really losing.

They'll probably never get the color of the pants right but at least they have the white pants to fall back on. It's still a great looking set.

See, at a glance, that looks far too much like Atlanta to me. The Bucs are in a tough spot, because adding black, adding red, using white pants, and lightening their pewter color all make them look more like their division rivals, which is just one of many reasons why I like orange for them. Personally, I think their citrus orange and pewter/cannonball grey can work really well together. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but there’s nothing inherently bad about the combo when evaluated against sound color theory (they’re basically a tint and shade of the same or similar/analogous hues). Adding some red to that makes for a nice palette, in my opinion. I think they could start with the ’97 look and work from there. Less black and red, more orange. Make the pirate reference in the type more clear and understandable in concept while making it more subtle in execution. Maybe something inspired by their current wordmark?

Aww, you’re absolutely ADORABLE.

I AM the Bucs on these boards, son. Self loathing isnt just a fun thing I do on Sundays. It’s a lifestyle.

If I could add another Bucs fan's perspective.  I lived the first 5/6 of my life in the Tampa Bay area, and though I was 9 when it happened, I still kinda remember the switch to red and pewter being a welcomed change.  The creamsicle look now is great nostalgia (I have my fair share of throwback jerseys), but I'd be really surprised if you find many local fans saying that look was a genuinely more appealing look than red and pewter, at least with regard to the 1997-2013 set.

Who is "we"? Do you have a mouse in your pocket. He simply doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to the orange and what Bucs fans thought about it before 1994.

I hate the new Buccaneers logo. Pewter was boring in 97, even more boring now.

He's a Bucs fan who has been active around here for years. @Bucfan56 and @Buc are pretty much our go-to Buccaneers fans around here.

As to your assertions? Sorry, I don't buy it. My time in Tampa hasn't been that long as of yet, but I can say that there is a certain stigma attached to the Bruce look. It's not all together negative. They sell throwback gear that sells relatively well, I think, but people aren't head over heels for it like Chargers fans are with powder blue or Rams fans are with the royal blue and athletic gold.

So I don't buy the idea that the Bucs fans loved the creamsicles before 1997. Enough people here have said that everyone was tired of the creamsicle look by 1997, and I'm inclined to believe them over you as the single dissenting voice to the contrary.

As a person that lived there and went to school there from 1972 to 1997, I knew enough people that liked it. Of course there were some that blamed the losing on the look, however now people are tired of the pewter/red look because it is a loser look since 2007. Now the pewter and red is the joke of the league because of what team it is associated with.

Since then 2 playoff berths, no playoff wins, haven't made the playoffs since 2007. 16 seasons since, 6 winning records, 9 double digit loss seasons. Those colors are now loser colors.

Okay, let’s play this game.

Since that exact Super Bowl:

The Raiders have 1 winning season and 11 double diget loss seasons

Should they rebrand because “those colors are now loser colors”?

Maybe it’s just that the Bucs are trash, no matter the costume.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Fire them cannons.

And if that's the case? Run with the colours you had the one time you won!

I mean I like the Bucco Bruce set, but I'm realistic about it.
