I am 100% with you on this …

ARCO Arena > PowerBalance Pavilion

Comiskey Park > Guaranteed Rate Field

Skydome > Rogers Centre

Ralph Wilson Stadium > New Era Field

Then there’s the Titans’ stadium — Adelphia Coliseum > LP Field > Nissan Stadium

Forgot about that one.  Add it to the list of corporate names that flow well.

This has to be one of the worst names ever.

Oh it's happened in San Diego for decades at the former home of the Rockets, Sails and Clippers.

San Diego International Sports Center -> San Diego Sports Arena -> iPay One Center -> San Diego Sports Arena -> Valley View Casino Center -> Pechanga Arena San Diego...

San Jose too with their arena

San Jose Arena -> Compaq Center -> HP Pavilion -> SAP Center

WTF was wrong with Compaq Arena or SAP Arena?

I get changing the corporate/honorary/city name as needed on any venue. Corporate sponsors change, people are honored, etc... but the qualifier need not be changed. For the above venue for example, Center, or Arena would have worked with any of the above city/corporate names and didn't need to be changed every time. Valley View Casino Arena would work just as well as the official name they went with and wouldn't have necessitated an unnecessary change.

Take the Oakland Alameda County Coliseum... at least it never stopped being "the Coliseum". It went OACC, UMAX Coliseum briefly, back to OACC, Network Associates Coliseum, McAfee Coliseum, OACC again, Overstock.com Coliseum, O.co Coliseum, OACC again. No change in the qualifier through 8 name changes.

I completely agree. For a professional big league team ... it's very Rookie Level.

I couldn't understand that as well, especially considering the fact that The Summit during the same time was the Compaq Center?!

If only the Bell System stayed broken up instead of merging back into AT&T, Pacific Bell Park was one of the best corporate names out there.

Amen to that! Pac Bell Park just flows so much better. Plus, San Antonio's AT&T Center was SBC Center which at least flowed ... a tad better.

What's even more fustrating, is when a venue has a common usage name, such as "the Sports Arena" for the venue in San Diego I mentioned earlier, yet the corporate name goes out of its way to use a different qualifier such as Center. Take the Shark Tank in San Jose. If not called "the Shark Tank" people still call it "the Arena" or "San Jose Arena" yet the haven't used that qualifier in decades now having used Center or Pavilion since then. At least the Giants stadium is still XXX Park, not Field or Ballpark or Stadium.

I can answer this one -- naming rights synergy.

Not saying I like it . . . but this one I get.

No one called the Metrodome Mall of America field

But it was always the Metrodome. Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. MofA Field was just a deal the Vikings had with their turf. The building never sold its name. But, the NFL went along with the fake name because it's the name their member makes money from.

You'll never see a major professional venue have both a stadium and field corporate named. Because both want that to be the name the place is called.

As for unique stadium names, I'm surprised we don't have any more Grounds, Pavillions (though that was corporate tie-in), etc. And how now of the new domed stadiums are called Domes. Sure, they're retractable roofed stadiums, but the concept is still a baseball or football stadium with a roof is just always called a Dome. Opened or closed.

Some talk of either Starbucks or Seattle's Best getting the name for Safeco (just banter, not sure if ever was looked into), but "Seattle's Best Coffee Grounds" would be the most unique double-meaning name there is for a venue. Even more than HP Pavillion.

"Union Station Grounds" would have been a cool name for the Astros' park.

I completely agree. As much as I hate the Mercedes-Benz Superdome name after nearly 40 years as the Louisiana Superdome ... at least they kept the name Superdome in the title. The Saints got it "right" there.

That is one reason why I love that the Pacers arena is a Fieldhouse. I hope they keep that in the title when the get their new sponsor next year.

But, what other unique names are out there? Grounds, Yards, Down, Pavilion, Gardens, Pitch ... what else?

Ottawa's arena was called the Palladium early on, a name it should have kept the same way Calgary kept Saddledome through its various naming rights.

I was thinking of how Oracle bought the naming rights to the Oakland Arena and the original plan was for it to be The Oracle. That would have been pretty cool. In a similar vein, I wonder if we could have seen a never-moved Minnesota North Stars play at The Polaris, sponsored by the snowmobile people but tying in nicely with the North Stars and avoiding another Arena or Center.

They should have kept the name, but unlike the Saddledome, the name wasn't around long enough to build up any equity for it to be kept around.  And, really, with the Saddledome roof being shaped like a saddle, could it really be called anything else, no matter the corporate name?

Another reason why it might be Arena and not Centre or whatever, could be there are multiple arenas with the same sponsor.  Rogers Centre, Rogers Place, Rogers Arena.  American Airlines Arena, American Airlines Center.  Scotiabank Arena in Toronto isn't Scotiabank Gardens because they didn't want people to think of the old Maple Leaf Gardens.  It's also not Centre because there's already an arena called that in Halifax.

Ah yes, I love good old "Hey we're all goin' over to" Rogers Place.

Quebec City's new arena was going to be "Amphithéâtre Vidéotron" but they ultimately went with the standard-issue "Centre Vidéotron." Personally, I wish they had used Colisée again.

One small measure of success if that we've generally gotten away from "The ___ at ____." There's still Broncos Stadium at Mile High and Oriole Park at Camden Yards, but much like subdivisions with stupid names like GreenPointe Old Towne Centre, we've generally moved on.

For a while, the Citrus Bowl was officially the “Florida Citrus Bowl at Tinker Field”. This means it was a stadium named after another stadium (that has a different sport played in it). Also, Walgreens sponsored the field for Orlando City games one year, and they made a huge point of labeling all of the poles at the corners of the stadium “Happy” and “Healthy”. That entire year, every time someone would get a corner the PA announcer would say “This corner kick is brought to you by Walgreens, at the corner of happy and healthy”. Even he sounded exasperated saying it by the 5th or 6th corner of the game. Now, it’s a running gag among fans, with many repeating the phrase every time someone gets a corner even today.

They should totally hire a strip club DJ to be the PA person.

Reminds me of that old Tom Green skit where he was an insane PA guy at a minor league game and eventually got kicked out.
