I don't think a Super Bowl that comes down the 4th quarter can be among the worst all time games.  I'll take it over Seattle's dismantling of Denver any day.

There was lots of good defense.  And, no doubt, lots of bad offense.  By no means was it a great game, but I'm old enough to remember San Francisco beating Denver 55-10.  And Washington clobbering Denver. And the Giants.  Wow, the Broncos lose their games huge.  Not to mention some recent blow-outs in the college playoff and BCS.  This game kept my interest.

I think people forget that throughout its history the Super Bowl has been a dud game more often than not. When everyone was grousing about the Seahawks kicking the crap out of the Broncos I remember thinking "This is always what it was like when I was a kid". I'm not old enough to have watched those 80's games live, but as a kid I religiously watched every NFL Films Super Bowl recap in the days leading up to the game. ESPN 2 used to run a marathon every year and little me never missed a one. When the Elway Broncos beat the Packers that was the first year I'd ever seen a Super Bowl that was actually a good game. Up until that point blowouts were the norm, the AFC always got destroyed (unless you were the Bengals. I used to take sad pride in the fact that the Bengals put up the best fight against the 49ers), and you were lucky if it was within a couple scores.

Dang millennials these days are so spoiled by all these great Super Bowls.

Watching all those old NFL Films about the Super Bowls was so much fun when I was a kid. I was also always a fan of when they'd show condensed versions of classic college bowl games.

Was this a defensive battle where both defenses truly shone, or was this a field-position taffy pull defined more by unforced errors and general sloppiness?

It’s the latter.

I'd actually take Seattle clobbering Denver over this snoozefest. Yesterday didn't even really feature great defensive prowess - it was just a sloppy, uneventful, boring game. The punters were the stars of the show until about the last 5 minutes or so. We weren't even getting lots of turnovers or sacks. This game never held my interest until the very end, and even at that, it was "ho hum, the Pats are going to win in the 4th quarter again." 😴

At least Seattle provided us with lots of exciting offense and an opportunity to see an amazing team just clicking on all cylinders. Yesterday showed both those teams in a terrible light, and it was a battle to see who'd lose, not a battle to see who'd win. I'd take an offense-filled blowout over that snoozer any day.

For those inclined, NFL Network now does this every year the weekend prior to the Super Bowl. Problem is, they always start their marathon at the same time of the same day, which means the same Super Bowls end up airing overnight when either the West Coast, or nobody, is able to watch. Which is why the Super Bowls between, oh I dunno, probably 1975-1990 remain as much a mystery to me as they do. Maybe I'll watch those games on YouTube some day.

There really should be a 24-hour NFL Films channel. I would watch the crap out of that.

I think the late '70s Super Bowls were the Steelers beating the Cowboys and the halftime show was a marching band playing the theme song to The Partridge Family.

That's because Pete Rozelle insisted on marching bands or Disney parade floats as halftime entertainment and didn't want something to upstage the game, which is just so early NFL thinking it makes me laugh. "Johnny Unitas. Now there's a haircut you can set your watch to."

I looked up the halftime show for the Bengals and 49ers second super bowl expecting them to have something in the late 80's like Miami Sound Machine or something of that level. Nope. It was something called "Be Bop Bamboozled" – South Florida-area dancers and performers including Elvis Presto, and 3-D effects. Turns out this is the first time they tried something big and it was a Elvis impersonator. Good writeup on it here: https://ftw.usatoday.com/2014/01/25-years-ago-a-super-bowl-halftime-show-featuring-a-man-named-elvis-presto-changed-halftime-shows-forever

This thing where we expect the Halftime Show to be a legendary performance every year is weird because up until Prince destroyed Miami I can't remember it ever mattering. Other than Janet Jackson's boob, but nobody remembers what happened in the performance before that.

Gloria Estefan was the headliner for the "Winter Magic" halftime show at SBXXVI in Minneapolis! This one also had Dorothy Hamill and Brian Boitano skating around on platforms and the 1980 Miracle on Ice team running down some stairs and waving to the crowd. The SBXXIX Indiana Jones themed show with Pattie Labelle and Tony Bennett is goofy but entertaining, Disney produced it and used parts of the Indiana Jones Stunt Show from Disney World.

Maybe if the NFL can't land a top act for the halftime show they should just start cheesing it up again, next year it's in Miami get Disney to produce and tie it in with the new Star Wars Land coming to both Disneyland and Disney World, have BB8 and R2-D2 scooting around and Mark Hamill singing songs from Guys and Dolls. Or since it's the game is on FOX do a big song and dance tribute to the Simpsons, they have enough of a song catalog to fill the 15 minutes.

As a Hawks fan, I really enjoyed that Super Bowl.

13 year old me made his first of two big mistakes of television watching that year. First was shutting off that halftime performance because by the time Kid Rock came on, I'd had enough of terrible pop music performances. So I missed out on the thing that upstaged the walk-off FG Super Bowl.

9 months later I shut off the Friday night NBA on ESPN game featuring the Pacers at the Pistons with about 4:30 left, feeling the Pacers had the game locked up by then. You know exactly what came next.

I was at a party for that SB with a bunch of friends (we were in high school at the time). They decided they wanted to play Madden during halftime, even though I wanted to see how bad the halftime show was in order to spend the entire time ridiculing it. (Us 14 year old boys in the year 2004 were most definitely not into Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake.) We had no clue what had even happened during that show until the next morning when it was all over the morning news. Still feel like I totally missed out one of the more bizarre moments in TV history.

Nothing beats Super Bowl XVI's Up With People halftime show. That was 80's gold, baby.

As far as worst game I ever saw? 1983 NCAA men's basketball. Kentucky beat Cincinnati 24-11.  It was 40 minutes of four corners basketball. Yawnfest.

Ugh, this reminds me of when the halftime show was *more* overtly commercial and I hated it. One year when ABC had the Super Bowl in the 90s, there was a shoehorned in Indiana Jones skit that was apparently to promote a Disneyland ride. And there was also that Blues Brothers one shortly before the horrible sequel film. Timely references!

Next halftime show is going bro-country all the way, book it.
