Counterfeit Scavenger Hunt

These things just annoy me to no end... the counterfeit jersey -- and some of them are just so obvious. I own a booth at a market (in Pickering, Ontario if you're ever in the area) on weekends and whenever I'm there I just go through the jersey racks and laugh at how terrible their "authentics" are -- "This one's real" one vendor says to me.

Anyways, I suggest sharing stories or posting E-Bay links of counterfeit sellers -- in a perfect world we'd be able to get these things shut down but I understand that just ain't going to happen.

But I'll get the ball rolling by posting this NBA Hardwood Classic Celtics jersey

One of the things about United Waffles' example is that ALOT of people put authentic on replicas and even fashion jerseys. I used to email people about it and I got into an email exchange with one guy. Basically, he said that it is authentic because of the MLB tag.

So, it seems that a lot of people that are less into this than we are confuse "authentic" with "officially licensed". Nobody as with our eyes for this stuff would ever think these are autthentic. I don't know what more novice people think though.

So now I assume most people taht use "authentic" for "offically licesnsed" are not being dishonest, just not thorough.

The one I hated most was jerseystore2000 on ebay. I have not run across them in a while--they may have changed their names. They had blantantly counterfiet stuff. It was unbelieveable. They also claimed rediculous fashion jerseys to be "the same as worn on the field." My favorite example were "same as worn on the field" batting practices jerseys of Tony Gwynn and Kirby Puckett. The fashion jerseys were the excact same style and font, obviously cookie-cutter fashion jerseys made for every team. They are based in Philadelphia and have a lot of Philly things. Some things were legit, but most was not.

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

You do make good comments. I spend a Xmas break working for a sports memorbelia store owner in 1997-8 and they told me about certain types, which I am not sure if they still exist. For NBA jerseys, there were two separate distinctions that I remember. Please inform us all if they changed. I remember talking to prospective buyers about "pro cut" jersrys and "double tag" jerseys. One type equally ment the other, howeverI forget what. It had to do with the length which NBA players obviosuly needed compared to us regular folk. This was all during the Champion days, so I may be totally wrong now.

I just got back two weeks ago from the disaster relief in Thailand. I was in Bankok for a few days walking down the street and the markets were flooded with counterfit jerseys(not to mention the various other fashion brands). Some of which were mirror images of the Authentics. I guess the very technology we come to depend on bites us back sometimes. It is kind of sad because there is a tremendous demand for these and most of their customers are Americans and Europeans who KNOW DAMN WELL they are counterfit. The question is: Why are they so in demand. I was reading a thread about alternate jerseys and the MAJOR MARKETING SCHEMES launched to market these SUPER HIGH PRICED items. The Consumers dont want to pay the prices for a jersey. Especially when they find out what the cost of goods are to produce, and that happens when your friend comes back from Thailand or Taiwan and shows you his "authentic Jersey" he got for 4 dollars that looks IDENTICAL to yours you payed fifty dollars for.

The manufactures of the materials (twills, AT satin, NX, FIT, etc.) make these products readily available for any marking shop to be able produce the jerseys with the EXACT materials as PRO SPORTS. All They need then is a LOGO, which we all know is available all over. Only now are they starting to produce new materials that are kind of like The DOLLAR BILL with security features built inside which ensures the Authentic Value of and item. Like security features in the Tags as well as special glues behind the applique. Technology BItes, but it helps too...to make a product more value added. The Jerseys now-a-days are(I HATE TO SAY IT) cheap. It will take a little time for them to cycle through and produce "SECURUTY" Authentics, but the technology is there.

This problem is much wider than we think. Go to best Brands of the World, Download, "QUICKSILVER" or "NIKE", next go to EBAY and purchase 100 dollars worth of screen printing equipment and you got yourself a factory. The Majority of people just want Identity and dont care att all if its Authentic or not. They just want to be seen with The name.

I am encouraged by sites like this. True fans have the opportunity to show our own unique concepts of teams we love without having to get caught up in the PROPAGANDA MACHINE. There should be no limit to being able to identify ourselves with a TEAM or image. And if we do buy a jersey, the manufactures need to MAKE THEM MORE VALUABLE and produce them in a technique that cannot be replicated. My Four cents...

this is an "authentic" leetch "jersey" :)

ive got a sharks temu salannie jersey almost exactly like that that i got at K mart for $5.

anyway, i like the "authentic" swapmarket jerseys, even if the word marks are slightly off or something. the reason being is because you can get stitched jerseys that, although are rip offs, are like $30, and are a lot of times way more durable than the reebok replicas, and most people think they look awesome. so if you hang out with a bunch if jersey authenticity ignoramas, i say buy the rip offs :P

It's almost as if someone bought one of those blank Blue Jackets CCM jerseys and went to town on it

If you do a search under "San Jose Sharks" jersey. There's a ton of Teemu Selanne jerseys like that too.

I look at some of these "replicas" as guilty pleasures. Sort of like concept jerseys.

I know they are knockoffs, but if I can get one cheap and I like it, I will add it to my collection. While thousands of authentics are made, perhaps only a few of the knockoffs are. Might even enhance their collectibilty. Call them the Edsels of jerseys. :D
