So yeah, i know it was asked last year but I cant find the old thread. Why exactly do the Cards wear their red hats with the road jerseys on the road in spring training?

I don't know why, but the red hats/grey jerseys look much better than the blue road cap, and there's no need to mention the alternative cap. That alternative cap is one of the ugliest in baseball.

Agreed on the red hats, but I do like the blue hats because of history. They've worn blue caps for longer in their history than the red. It might be close now, but up until the 60s they were in primarily blue.

disagreed on the alts. Its a sharp hat. I can get on your side about them not having alt hats at all, but its still a great looking cap in this man's humble opinion.

They're one of two teams I think that should just stick with one cap. The Cardinals should just have the red cap. The Blue Jays just the blue (which I don't think they even wear anymore). No blue Cardinals cap and no black or grey Blue Jays cap. When you're named after a color, you stay loyal to that color or you change your name.

Well, technically the Cards are named for the bird and not the shade of red, although I do see your point.

I like the Cardinals Blue cap.

I would add the Cubs to the list of teams that should have one hat.

I knew about the history factor, but I just don't like the look w/the blue caps. With the trim being red, red just looks better, and the blue cap looks out of place. As for the alt. hat, given the history of the St. L interlocking logo on the cap, again, I just think it looks better.

Actually the Cardinals were named for the shade of red they wore. You can read that about their early history. Regardless, the navy hats look great, as well as the red. Until 1963, they only wore navy hats. No red at all except the bill in the '40s (simple history, not exact). Red at home and navy on the road are great.

You may be thinking about the Arizona Cardinals.

I'm pretty sure the St. Louis Cardinals were named after the bird.

The problem with the Cardinals alternate hat and this has bugged me forever, is that either that is the biggest cardinal ever, or it is perched on a very little bat. I used to like those hats, but then I thought about it and I just can't get past that idea in my head that the bird or the bat is proportionally off.

Think about it.

Nope, he's right. From the Team History section of the Cardinals' site:

1899 - The Robison Brothers, Frank and Stanley, discarded the name of Browns, calling the St. Louis National Leaguers the Perfectos. The ownership also discarded the old Sportsman's Park name in favor of League Park. The team was outfitted in red striped stockings and red-trimmed uniforms. When sportswriter Willie McHale, of the St. Louis Republic, heard a lady fan remark, "What a lovely shade of cardinal," the new nickname was used in his column, and struck a chord with St. Louis fans.

I don't think either the St Louis Cardinals or the Arizona Cardinals actually wear cardinal anymore, and in any case have both since identified themselves with the bird.

Myself, I like the alt cap. I don't love it - the scale is so wonky, as mac2 pointed out - but in general, I really like it.

It strikes a nice balance between my love of mascot logos and being limited to an alternate it satisfies my - well, my cardinal rule that you put your city's initial on the cap.

I agree - it would look just as odd the other way.

That's why the only sensible solution would be to bring back (and update) one of these guys:

I've always liked that middle one (the batting cardinal).

On the subject of only red hat during spring training, other than BP hats, if a team is wearing their regular hat, they only wear one throughout spring training. Tigers do the same. No need for the roads or alts. with the amount of games they play, plus the fact that pretty much every team (other than Florida, Tampa Bay, and Arizona) are in fact on the road cuz not every team in baseball is from those two states. It's really no big deal at all.

As one of the resident DIE-HARD Cardinals' fans here, my 2 cents on all their hats....all are extremely great. ( I know a little bias there, but I don't care.) The home, enough's been said about it that I don't need to add. The roads, reprisal of the classic hat they used to wear. Plus, I just really don't like the look of red hats with gray uni's. It bothers me with the Angels, too. I don't know. Personal opinion I guess. And the alt. is awesome. Kinda of a updated modern version of hats they wore in the 40's. And those picky about the size of the bird on the size of the bat, it's a logo. Not a lot of logos has all their components to scale. Not all are necessarily believeable. How many times have you seen the head of a Blue Jay with the letter J as it's body? It's a logo.

When it comes to threads about the Cardinals, you can always count on me to thrown in my opinion. ^_^ That's all I have to say about that.

Then why dont they just do like everyone else and wear the spring training tops? Are they and teams like the Yanks too good for the Spring Training gear?

They used to wear we're ST tops until maybe like 5 or so years ago.

I don't think it's a tradition thing the way the Yankees would be.

I think it's just a team decision on what they prefer. (Not necessarilly the players, but the organization).

Ummmm the Yanks have ST caps and jerseys. They always have. (And by the way, they look just as awful as the rest of the league).
