HedleyLamarr
If I had any clue what "spread" meant, I would start doing it for money.Basically, it's betting with the outcome of the game tied in. For example, say Atlanta is favored by 6 points over Kansas City this weekend. Straight-up (which is what this contest is), you just pick the winner. With the spread, you determine if you think the Falcons will beat the Chiefs by more or less than 6 points. If you say "yes", you pick the Falcons obviously. If you think "no", you pick Kansas City. So in essence, the Falcons can still win the game, but if they don't win by 7 or more points, the Falcons failed to cover the spread, and those that took Kansas City would win the money despite the Falcons winning by, say, 3 points. If the Falcons "push" (winning by exactly 6), you get back what you bet. Most betting agencies will set the line at X.5 to avoid pushes, as you can't score half-points in football. You have to watch the spreads over the course of the week, it tends to change a bit in order to entice more bets. If a key player is injured, the spread usually doesn't get determined until very late, or not at all. The tricky thing about betting with the spread is that meaningless points scored very late in games can often be a spread-better's dream/nightmare.Next week: I discuss the ins and outs of Over/Under.Kansas City at AtlantaOakland at BuffaloTampa Bay at ChicagoHouston at TennesseeCarolina at MinnesotaMiami at New EnglandCincinnati at NY GiantsArizona at WashingtonDetroit at San FranciscoSt. Louis at SeattleNew Orleans at DenverPittsburgh at PhiladelphiaJacksonville at IndianapolisCleveland at BaltimoreDallas at Green BayNY Jets at San Diego
