Reno's PCL team is named Aces

On the official website for the new team's message board, one of the team's representatives made a post that the team's name, logo and colors will be announced/unveiled to the public soon. Or, as the post stated, the announcement is "still a few weeks away".

Has anyone heard any grumblings about the new nickame for the team? Or, do any of you have ideas as to what would be the best name for the squad?

Maybe the font widely used on the site is some sort of clue. (Or simply just a placeholder.) I'll go with "Reno Aces," gambling reference notwithstanding.

A good guess, though that typeface would work with any Western-themed identity.

I'm encouraged by the colors. Brown is under-used in baseball.

As I've stated before, any nickname that could even slightly resemble a gambling reference would be a huge mistake. There's simply just too much the Nor-Nev area holds dear to cop out by using some stupid gambling reference. I personally would LOVE a Tahoe reference thrown in there for good measure ^_^

Abd BTW, I can't wait till this all gets rolling. I've been waiting for a ball club in Reno for years. Im determined to catch the opening game as well as every Sacramento Reno game that I possibly can.

Reno's Golden Baseball League squad has the quintessential name for a baseball franchise representing the city: the Silver Sox. Given that I can't see the GBL team sticking around to compete head-to-head with a Triple A franchise, it would have been great if some sort of deal could have been worked out to bring the Reno Silver Sox identity over to the new affiliated club.

I know... wishful thinking.

I'm just waiting for Reno to get its arena built for thier ECHL team, which would be essential if the Reno-Tahoe bid for the 2018 winter olympics is to be sucessful.

and there is nothing wrong with a gambling reference if it can be tied into something not gambling related......kinda like CardSharks you know :D

If they do go with the color scheme on the site, they made a good decision. The scheme they have is slick.

As for the name Aces, I actually think that's the name the Las Vegas 51s should adopt in the post-season when they change their name. The name would have a double meaning, with the obvious tie in to Vegas's gaming industry but they also could tie it in to the aviation industry, with Nelis Air Force base nearby.

I also think the name Silver Sox is almost too good to pass up if they can go that avenue.

I hope they go with Reno Silver Sox. I have feeling they won't though. I love the Silver Sox logo. One of the best in Minor League/Independent baseball.

Not to mention Silver Sox is usually the name associated with Reno baseball...

Very true, and there's good history with the name, too.

But after checking out some Reno blogs, as well as site development plans, I'd expect a more overt old-timey Western theme, possibly a railroad-related identity to go with the old Union-Pacific "Freight House" across the street.

(Granting that the Silver Sox name is an old-timey Western theme, but it's subtle. You have to know about the history and the Comstock and so forth to get the connection to frontier days.)

Regardless of the team's name, the ballpark's press box should be named in honor of Dan DeQuille, the Western Nevada journalists and humorist who almost became Mark Twain.

Reno's GBL team is most likely moving to Carson City.

:therock: Where in the HELL could they possibly play in Carson? Unless WNCC just got a new field, the only feasable option would be to play at Carson High School, which is a dump, and a HUGE downgrade from playing on the UNR campus.

Ok this is completely off topic but I found this funny further down in the article talking about local high school football.

The Sierra League will be a two-team race between Douglas and Bishop Manogue. Galena has been unimpressive. Ditto for Carson. Damonte Ranch and Fallon are supposed to be better, and honestly I don?t know anything about South Tahoe

Not really much to know, were absolutely HORRIBLE, like we always are. I'm going to the South Tahoe McQueen game this saturday and I'll be shocked if we don't get shut out and beat by 50.

(UPDATED)...Insomnia settling in, so I did a little research and found these two tidbits; take 'em for what they are worth:

"Reno Aces" has been trademarked by SK Baseball (the ownership group).

"Reno Silver Sox" trademark was abandoned in November 2007 by The Diamond Group (Golden Baseball League).

Speaking of minor league baseball congratulations the Sacramento RiverCats (AAA) & Stockton Ports (A) for winning their respective league championships. Pacific Coast & California. Both are Oakland A's farm teams.

WOO!!!! 4th title in 6 years!!! :)

Now all we have to do is win the Bricktown Showdown vs Scranton/Wilkes-Barre later today and we'll have our second straight AAA title.
