Sea Kitten High School

Is it possible that Spearfish High School will be the next school with a name controversy?

The University of North Dakota has been in and out, but mostly in controversy over its Fighting Sioux nickname over the recent years. The school adopted the slogan in 1930.

Now PETA, or the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, is eying Spearfish High School for a name change.

Sea Kitten High School, it doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

PETA sent Principal Steve Morford a letter Wednesday asking him to ?launch an initiative to change the name of his school to Sea Kitten High and encourage everyone to refer to fish and other marine animals as sea kittens.?

"If Spearfish High School became Sea Kitten High and everyone in town starts calling fish 'sea kittens,' fewer of these gentle animals would be violently killed for food, painfully hooked for 'sport,' or cruelly confined to aquariums," said PETA's "Save the Sea Kittens" campaign coordinator Ashley Byrne. "Schools strive for achievements in academics and sports, so why not add compassion to the list?"

The suggestion is ?tongue-in-cheek-which beats a hook in the mouth any day, PETA believes.?

Morford assured the community that the school would not change its name.

?It's nothing that we're taking seriously and it's not going to happen,? he said with a chuckle. ?The Spearfish Spartans have a long standing tradition of being the Spearfish Spartans and they will stay that way.?

PETA staffers said they sent the letter to ?Raise awareness how we can all be kinder to animals and the fact that nobody would ever hurt a dog or a cat, but there are more fish killed each year than all other all other animals combined,? said Pulin Modi, a supervisor for PETA2, the youth division of PETA. ?It's a tongue-in-cheek kind of way to raise these issues - it would be great if they did (change their names) because we know, young people especially are naturally and drawn to and are kind to animals.

?Fish feel fear and experience the pain just like all animals do that have a complex nervous system,? Modi said.

But PETA's suggested name change didn't sit well with some Spearfish residents

?That's crazy,? said Marc Casavan, owner of Mark's Barber Shop in Spearfish. ?You don't do that in South Dakota, Wyoming or Montana. Those states are animal hungry - fish hungry.?

Casavan said that PETA's ploy will soon become ?the butt of many jokes.?

?This isn't California,? he said flabbergasted. ?You can get away with that there but not here.?

He said he looked forward to the paper coming out and added it would be the talk of the day at the shop.

Council member Eric Davis saw the letter and ?immediately? sent a memo to Spearfish City Council members stating that they may want to look into changing the name of the community.

Spearfish resident Patty Tetrault had to ask her daughter, Sydney ?Is this a joke??

?After all we live in South Dakota,? she said.

A reader identified only as Dave wrote ?Dear PETA,

Thank you for your letter. We too are troubled by the dysfunctional name of our local school and have taken your suggestion under advisement. After many hours of discussion, we have decided to change the name of our school. Introducing for the first time (thanks to you) Stabtrout High School, home of the Eyepoppers.?

?That's ridiculous,? said Raenae Raga a Spearfish High School graduate. ?Unless we change the name of our town too, it doesn't really make sense.?

?I think God put animals on earth to provide for us,? said Paula Vostad Spearfish resident.

Many business and landmarks in the area are named after Spearfish.

The Historic D.C. Booth Sea Kitten Hatchery?

The Sea Kitten Chamber of Commerce?

Sea Kitten Canyon?

They don't have the same impact.

I can see it now, after a day of visiting Sturgis during the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally a burly biker is going to come to Spearfish, sorry, Sea Kitten and buy a T-shirt as his was drenched in an afternoon rainstorm. ?I love Sea Kittens? with a big pink ?Sea Kitten? on the back.

But on the plus side for PETA the fight song for Spearfish is ?Anchors Aweigh.? Will the environmental group want the school to stick with that or will it want a change to something less violent like ?Under the Sea? the hit song from ?The Little Mermaid??

PETA even has a ?create your own Sea Kitten? on its Web Site.

PETA also sent a similar letter to Whitefish High School in Whitefish, Mont., requesting the same name change, according to PETA's blog.

WHITEFISH ? Meow. Actually, make that, me-OW!

The next time you hook into a lunker, and the rod tip bends as line spools out, the folks at PETA want you to look that fish square in the eye and think of it not as dinner, but rather as a ?sea kitten.?

In fact, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals want Whitefish High School to rename itself Sea Kitten High School, encouraging everyone to refer to fish and other marine animals as sea kittens.

?We?re hoping that by calling fish ?sea kittens,? compassionate people who would never hurt a dog or a cat will realize that fish feel pain and fear, just like furry and winged animals do,? the group wrote in a letter to Whitefish principal Kent Paulson. ?In fact, neurobiologists tell us that fish have complex nervous systems that comprehend and respond to pain. Fish communicate and develop relationships with one another, show affection by gently rubbing against other fish, and even grieve when their companions die.?

The name-change request, which is admittedly tongue-in-cheek, is part of a national initiative on behalf of all fish species, which PETA says suffer unduly because they are not ?cute and cuddly.?

?Schools strive for achievements in academics and sports,? said PETA campaign coordinator Ashley Byrne, ?so why not add compassion to the list??

Most parents, the letter concludes, ?would never dream of spending a family weekend torturing kittens, but hooking fish through their mouths and pulling them through the water is just as painful as hooking a cat?s mouth and dragging him or her behind a car.?

Paulson wasn?t available to discuss a possible name change on Wednesday, but superintendent Jerry House said he?d been giving it some serious thought.

?By all means,? he said, ?we try each and every day to teach respect for the feelings of others.?

Usually, he said, that lesson does not explicitly extend to fish, but ?hey, why not??

In fact, House thinks all of Whitefish should consider the new name.

But he, for one, suggests White Kitten, rather than Sea Kitten, as Whitefish is so far from the coast.

?White Kitten High School, the White Kitten City Council, the White Kitten Fire Department ? it has a certain ring to it, don?t you think??

Break the politically correct law, House said, ?and you?ll be arrested by the White Kitten Police Department, and taken to the White Kitten Jail, where you?ll be treated with soft, furry paws and a purr of compassion.?

Other towns, such as Spearfish, S.D., also received the PETA letter, and reportedly were taking the request under advisement.

?Of course they are,? House said. ?After all, who wants to be on the hook for being insensitive to kittens??

Last summer, Whitefish High played host to a conference of the National Federation of Fly-Fishers, who presumably take a very different position on all matters fishy. In a town so reliant upon tourism and conventions, House suggests that the new name could bring in similar new business.

?Next year, maybe we?ll get the National Federation of Sea Kittens,? he said. ?The fur will be flying, and they?ll have scratching post exhibits.

?But,? he warned, ?we?re going to have to bring in lots and lots of litter boxes.?

Sea Kitten? Seriously. No wonder we all think PETA is full of loonies.

And this is the issue. Most of us agree with PETA in principle, but disagree with their over the top methods of getting their point across (e.g. dumping buckets of blood on models wearing leather, etc.).

Exactly. To them it's not just about making their point. It's making their point AND using bullying, among other shady ways, as a tactic to MAKE you see their point. You know that this won't be the end of them trying to get the names of those schools changed. I can imagine that if they don't comply, PETA's going to run wacky protests and demonstrations all over that place.

[obligatory]PETA has gone crazy again.[/obligatory]

I'd be more apt to kill and eat something called a sea kitten rather than a spearfish. At least sea kitten sounds easier and less dangerous to catch.

That's what we are supposed to call their young by... Sea Kittens.

Once they grow up, they become Catfish (Whose natural enemy is the Dogfish, who starts out life as a... Yep, a Sea Puppy).

I think I'd rename the high school just for spite: "Tasty Bovine Meat High School" has a nice ring to it.

That's the problem with PETA2. They are the more down-to-earth, youth oriented "branch" of PETA. They are about the message and not at all about the bullying. The worst part of the PETA2 is that they are affiliated with PETA. I don't how something created by PETA can be so different and I know that some PETA2 workers and volunteers wish PETA2 would spilt off and go independent.
