Division 1 College Conference Realignment

Well the 65 schools of the Power 5 Conferences have won.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The NCAA’s board of directors endorsed a proposal Thursday giving schools in the five largest football conferences more autonomy and more voting power in changing rules within the organization.

The changes would allow the wealthiest schools to adopt some legislation on their own, including provisions for money beyond what current scholarships cover, up to the full cost-of-attendance, expanded insurance coverage and money to help families travel to NCAA tournaments.

The proposal would affect the 65 schools in the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC.

NCAA President Mark Emmert supports the move. A formal vote is expected in August. If passed then, the transition could begin this fall.

The board also approved allowing schools to provide unlimited meals and snacks to athletes.

Good luck AAC, MWC, SunBelt and C-USA. But people also bitched about student-athletes not being able to get food at 11pm.

Wouldn't be surprised to see UMass in the Sun Belt. Benson's been hellbent on getting to 12 teams for football even if it means adding schools like Idaho and New Mexico State. They've been looking for an eastern team since Western Kentucky moved to C-USA (the school Benson seemingly worshipped while everybody else expected them to move one) and seem to have gotten the cold shoulder from James Madison and want nothing to do with Liberty.

Sorry about the bump. The ACC and Big Ten welcome Louisville, Maryland, and Rutgers respectively into their conferences today.

  • East Tennessee State: Atlantic Sun to Southern
  • Georgia Southern: Southern to Sun Belt

Can't help but think that we'll eventually see the Power 5 conferences officially form their own football subdivision in the near future (10 to 20 years). Some people have said those schools would just leave the NCAA altogether. In my mind leaving the NCAA would severely hurt the non revenue sports of the P5 schools. Forming a new subdivision of D1 would both keep them in the NCAA fold and give the babies their bottle.

I don't like what's going on with college sports :(

What makes you think the P5 schools care about their non-revenue sports?

They're convenient money pits if nothing else.

This is getting a huge bump because UAB's football program might be shut down.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/11959176/uab-blazers-coach-bill-clark-fears-football-program-shut-down

If UAB shuts down, could Conference-USA drop UAB for that?

http://espn.go.com/blog/ncfnation/post/_/id/104283/uab-football-program-cant-outrun-past-escape-shadow-of-alabama

This article says they will. The C-USA would then have an even number of teams, but damn this sucks for UAB.

Actually, I thought Charlotte is a member of C-USA and will play a full-conference schedule next year. That would make it 13 teams and you get the problem the MAC has. C-USA should add James Madison or Liberty to even the number of teams.

Currently, UAB is at the Division 1 minimum in terms of men's teams required to be a member of D-1 conference.

Completely forgot about Charlotte, my bad. I'd love for more FCS schools to join FBS, but aside from FCS schools, I could see a Sun Belt or AAC team joining. Or the MAC could just give them a team :P

Cutting down to D-II would surely cut costs

You can rest assured that C-USA will get an application package from New Mexico State before the end of the week. Not saying they'll let them in, but I strongly suspect New Mexico State would lobby hard for that spot.

NMSU definitely is the leading horse of the jettisoned WAC football programs. Idaho's still on life support since I've heard rumors for a while that they may end up dropping down to FCS and joining the Big Sky.

As they should, Idaho is in the Big Sky for everything else, so dropping down would make a lot of sense. They would have pretty high travel costs if they were to play in any other league than the MWC, and they're probably not going to take them.

They need to drop down if, for no other reason,
