Story B: Red Wings go undefeated and score 100 goals in every game. They also beat a team comprised of Godzilla, the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, 2 Power Rangers and Betty White. Oh, and they played in the middle of Iraq on a military base. In the sand. With no ice. Santa gave them special sand-skates that allowed them to play in shorts and t-shirts in 115 degree weather. Jesus, Zeus and Buddha watched from the sidelines and ate cotton candy.

The story of the year may turn out to be Michael Vick's rise from convict to hated person to backup QB to starting QB to role model to MVP candidate (he or Brady will win it.) If the Eagles can somehow win it all, it will be one of the greatest sports stories of all time.

As for single performance, there's been a lot of them this year. I think that Roy Halladay's playoff no hitter has to be mentioned, beause of the historical aspect of it. The second no hitter ever, in his very first start.

For moment, not sure if the SB counts since it was technically for the 2009 season (though played in 10), but Drew Brees with the Lombardi and his son was a great moment. It wasn't an actual "play" though.

Play: Sundiata Gaines' buzzer-beater three against LeBron and the Cavs in his first game in the NBA

Individual Performance: Blake Griffin against the Knicks. One word: dominance.

Game: Eagles/Giants or (homer pick) Boise State/Virginia Tech

Moment: The Rangers finally going to the World Series, or the Saints finally winning a Super Bowl

Story: Vick's comeback

I think Vick is a great story. I went from loving the guy when he was on my team to feeling really bad for him because a stupid act cost him so much. But now that he's back and better than ever I'm happy for him and I hope he does win the MVP. I don't want him to win the Super Bowl because I want Atlanta to go. But it takes a hell of a man to make the changes he had to make to get back and play at that level. He is making the most of his second chance and I can't be happier for him.

First World Series victory for the city of San Francisco FTW. Best moment for me probably ever.

I'm surprised only one person listed Landon Donovan's goal vs Algeria for best moment. Whether or not you're into soccer, try to think about the whole impact of that moment.

The USA is within about 2 minutes of tying 0-0 and facing elimination in the World Cup. The game is in stoppage time, and Donovan knocks in the rebound after Dempsey's shot is stopped. Suddenly, within about 5 seconds, the USA goes from being 2 minutes away from elimination to winning the group and advancing to the next round.

It is very rare in sports to go from complete failure to absolute success all in one play, but that moment is a perfect example of how great sports and intense soccer can be.

And if more people in this country actually gave a hoot about soccer, that would very easily top the list...but we all know how that goes by this point. (And for the record, I agree with everything you said there).

However, we all know by and large the collective conscience of thic country is controlled by big media, and as such are only apt to remember the stories of those who constantly get cameras and microphones stuck in their grilles. That said, the LeBronathon thing definitely ranks above all in that regard--followed only marginally by the whole "will he/won't he" off-again, on again saga of he who shall remain nameless (unless Cujo bothers to name him).

Play: DeSean Jackson's punt return to cap a 28 point comeback in 7:41. That entire comeback was outrageous, but to do something like that which had never been done to end a game in regulation? That is amazing. The only way that would've been better would be if DeSean pulled a complete awesome douche move and celebrated lavishly. Oh well, lost opportunity.

(Close second: Blake Griffin dunking over Mozgov. To put this in perspective, Dwight Howard did that exact same dunk to win a Slam Dunk contest, except D12 didn't have to jump over a 7 foot man in an actual game. Good Lord.)

Game: USA vs. Canada in the Hockey Gold Medal Game. I give this game credit for getting me back into hockey for the first time in years & inspiring me to seriously follow it. Despite the fact that the USA lost, you can't deny that, considering the stakes on the line, the overall quality of play & complete excitement that this was probably the top game of the year.

(Close Second: AFL Grand Final going to a draw, & them having to replay it the next week. What are the odds?!)

Moment: Landon Donovan scores the goal to win the group for the USA. (I didn't know how they were going to top the drama from the Slovenia robbery comeback. They did it here. Plus, just seeing the

from people all over was just amazing. For a moment the nation rallied together behind this crew. It was awesome.

(Close second: Halladay throwing a no-no in his first postseason appearance. Jesus.)

Story: Vick's Return. The absolute last thing I want as a Falcons fan would be for the Eagles to come into Atlanta and beat the Falcons (mainly because Falcons fans would probably never hear the end of it from the fans of Vick & Vick only.), but I gotta say: For a man to go from being in jail, to being lucky just to BE on an NFL team, to being third string on Week 1 this season, to winning the starting job (somewhat due to Kolb going down), to EXCELLING as a starter & could very well be MVP. It's amazing, he's fully realized his potential as a QB AND HE HAS HIS HEAD ON STRAIGHT NOW. What a great story, I'm happy for him.

(Close second: LeBron's Decision. That story was being built up for 2 years, and once the time finally came, LeBron took it to another level with the decision. Then he chose Miami and all hell broke loose. Wild.)

Second both of these.

As for play, I have to nominate Mark Buehrle's Play of the Year. I mean, you can't talk about best play of the year without talking about THE MLB Play of the Year.

Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (CHL - 2018 Orr Cup Champions) Chicago Rivermen (UBA/WBL - 2014, 2015, 2017 Intercontinental Cup Champions)

King's Own Hexham FC (BIP - 2022 Saint's Cup Champions) Portland Explorers (EFL - Elite Bowl XIX Champions) Real San Diego (UPL) Red Bull Seattle (ULL - 2018, 2019, 2020 Gait Cup Champions) Vancouver Huskies (CL)
