Am I the only one who thinks the "worlds champions" patch is a bit pretentious? Shouldn't teams be looking at this year, not back on last year?

Teams look back on past championships all the time. If the Twins can commemorate winning the pennant but losing the World Series 40 years ago (the patch year, not 40 years ago from today), the Giants can commemorate winning it last year. Then when they lose five of six to Arizona and Houston in the middle of July or something, they can make a big show out of FOCUSING ON THIS YEAR and discarding their patches after a PLAYERS'-ONLY MEETING and then Brian Wilson will say something and it will be a memorable subplot.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

It's not pretentious. The pretension is lost when you actually are the champions of the world.

Except that there are players wearing the patch who never won anything.

Japan?

I think it reads "World Series Champions", right? If so, it would be accurate.

Japan?

The Japanese all star team may beat a side of uninterested second tier American players in the WBC, but no way one of their regular clubs would beat the World Series champion in a seven game series. Plus when the World Series was created, basically was the only show on the planet.

Although it would be cool to see a tournament in the winter between the winners of the worlds big leagues. It would still be a bloodbath though.

Cliff Lee is wearing the patch?

And yeah, enough of this moaning about MLB using the term "world champions." I've seen people dust off the ol' "arrogant American" routine that we're insisting we're the best in the world. Yikes.

What does Cliff Lee have to do with this discussion?

Everything. The Phillies wore this in 2009, however Cliff was not on the team that won in 2008.

If it's any consolation, the only Giant wearing the patch that wasn't actually part of the team last year was Miguel Tejada, and at the rate he's playing, he'll be gone by June anyway.

The patch is for the team to identify itself as the defending world champions. A player who is on the team now, who wasn't on the team last season, is still playing for the defending world champions, and there's nothing weird about him wearing the patch.

I used to be for the Nationals script on the home jersey, but to be honest it doesn't look as professional as the Washington does. Something just isn't right. And the W has grown on me. Just line up the numbers on the front, and you have a winner.

Japan?

...does not play a calibre of baseball on par with the Major Leagues.

I agree with both of these... As in the now. Lets say the champions do start playing each other. Sure, the MLB teams will more than likely win for a while, but I would sure hope in the process the quality of Japan baseball would strive to get better, yes? The idea kinda reminds me of the ol' NFL-AFL....

I heard the Indians might change their name to "suck"

I heard that also, but major league baseball found that name racist against prostitutes ^_^

No you're wrong. The Indians can't change their name to suck because baseball already has two teams that have trademarked that name. One in Kansas City and one in Pittsburgh.

Very true. At least the Indians owned the AL in the 90's. I can't recall the Royals or Pirates ever doing anything. Never understood why Cleveland changed their uni's from this era.

IF ONE IS CONSIDERED RACIST, THEN BOTH MUST BE CONSIDERED RACIST.

BOTTOM LINE: NEITHER ONE IS RACIST.

Actually, nothing.

1. They stopped wearing the patch before they acquired Cliff Lee.

2. I never said that I thought it was OK when the Phillies did it. Please find where I wavered on this.
