Say it ain't so, Joe

The whole community doesn't get it. In January of 2015 the hockey team wore 409 decals on their helmets.

In a sign that someone there has some self-awareness the athletic director did come out and say it was inappropriate for the team to use that sticker and it was removed from their helmets. But good grief how tone deaf can you be?

That really would have been the only appropriate punishment.

I understand the impetus behind vacating wins - "You broke the rules because you only cared about winning?  Since old wins are just bragging rights anyway, that means you don't get to brag about x number of those."  That's why the Paterno family freaked out - they can''t hold Joe up as some sort of moral paragon anymore, so the only relevance their family name still has is tied to wins.  I don't find the punishment all that compelling, but I understand it.

But this situation called for something much, much stronger.  If engaging in a systematic and decades-long conspiracy to enable child rape isn't worthy of punishment, nothing is.

Yeah, and that's one of the tragedies here.  The NCAA has neutered itself  While I am hopeful that there won't be another Sandusky case, I would be pretty naive to think that schools are not doing what they can to sweep sexual assaults under the rug.  But now there's no precedent.  "You went soft on Penn State for decades of cover up and you want to give us the death penalty for trying to talk parents and cops out of charging three guys with sexual assault?"

It's really sad.  There's just too much money involved for the death penalty to ever be considered.  And everyone knows it.

I dunno, I'm fine with taking away the wins because it is patently clear that Paterno maintained the coverup because he thought he would not be able to survive the revelation that one of his assistant coaches was a child predator and to him the win record was more important than coming clean.

It seems that a lot of people in the Penn State community still revere Paterno as their "JoePa". These morons still think of him as the perfect grandfather figure that can never do anything wrong.

This is some cult level nonsense.

Kinda like Gothamite said above, I get it, too.  But it's an empty gesture.  Now Bowden holds the wins record but every time that's mentioned, someone brings up an asterisk.  You can take the wins off of the paper, kind of, but they can never really truly be erased.

You can take the wins away (I hardly saw it as a travesty) or you can leave them be.  But the one thing that should not have happened is taking them and then reinstating them.  It sends the message that "we were wrong" when they were not wrong.

It was really creepy seeing all these videos come out that night.  Just drunk college dumbasses thinking they know the world and wanting to raise some hell.  Profound, unfettered ignorance in action.

I remember thinking that a lot of those people will look back on that with embarrassment.  My gut feeling is that, so far, few have.

Can we really hit their wallets very hard in this day and age of big TV contracts and expensive stadiums?

This is something that the conference could have done if their was some type of ethics code in the TV contracts. I'm not sure most conferences or networks have such a thing for individual members. I know there are ethics rules that the schools agree to when joining and competing, I'm just not sure other than being blacked out by the NCAA (SMU) if there's anything else that's occurred.

I'm against them "taking" wins from Penn State for several reasons. First reason is that there's no real consequence that Penn State faces for simply losing wins. I guess you could say that it would hurt their status as a football school eventually, but I kinda feel like it'd be too far down the line to ever have anything other than a negligible effect on them. Second, how does revisionist history really help anyone? Acting like those games didn't happen or didn't count kinda just makes everything more confusing when it comes to an historical and a statistics perspective. I kinda think that levies a heavier punishment on college footballfans than it actually does the Penn State football program, which is nuts. If they really wanted to hurt Penn State, they'd shut the whole football program down for 5-10 years. Anything short of that doesn't really tangibly hurt Prnn State, and kinda just hurts the clarity of football's history.

I think ink a more effective punishment would be if the NCAA stepped up this year and said something like: Effective starting the 2019/2020 season (to avoid the what about everyone on scholarship argument), Penn State is ineligible from NCAA football competition for the next ten years. Any attempt to field a team, DII, independent, or otherwise, will add two years to their NCAA ineligibility.

I dont don't care if this all happened in the 70s. Penn State has to pay for this. :censored:, if it came out tomorrow that there was strong damning evidence that you murdered someone in 1974, you'd still face charges and have to face the consequences if you were convicted. I don't really see this as any different.

The Penn State athletic department is an auxiliary. Any lost conference revenue would just be made up by alumni, donors, and students who still love Paterno.

However, nearly all of you forget that the university still loses and has lost in that their state funding has dropped, like most state universities. But in Penn State's case, federal matching funds also leave when budget cuts occur.

If say there is a two year wage freeze, a project is shut down, or if there are 50-100 furloughs, I'd say that the university suffered damage.

Would also work if they were playing UMass.

There really is no sense of shame whatsoever up in Happy Valley is there?

Is there anyway we can rescind Viola's suspension just for this week? Watching that meltdown unfold is still the most entertaining thing I've seen on this board this year.
