I don't think it was. If I remember correctly Tugnutt's design originated when he played for the Canadiens, and it was supposed to represent Molson beer, since the Molson family owns the team. He just liked it enough to take it with him from team to team.

I've been a goalie for most of my life, and as someone who's also interested in sports aesthetics goalie mask design was something I followed religiously. I don't recall ever seeing generic default splash masks on sale from ITECH. Outside of Joseph's short stint with one I don't recall the design being used by anyone other then Tugnutt.
In all likelyhood Joseph wanted something that tied in with the Oilers name and Tugnutt's splash pattern was as good as any other design to emulate to that end. Then he switched back to his CuJo design when his career started to really take off in Edmonton.

The mask suits the jersey so perfectly. It really pops and is sharp. You can't help but notice how good it looks when you see it on TV.

Paying homage to his roots as a kid playing pond hockey with his friends.

Paying tribute to the Ottawa Fire Department who put out a fire in the Wild's equipment truck, which destroyed all of the goalie gear a few years ago.

Tribute to his recently deceased grandmother Rose.

All of those are fantastic. I especially like the pond hockey one.

Sean Burke had a great one during his days as a Coyote, too.

There comes a point when you don't stand for the constant heartbreak anymore, and walk away.

I found these ones of Kari Lehtonen in his Thrashers mask with the Joker on the side, a nod to his Finnish team the Jokerit Jokers. His first Wolves mask, the flames mimic the flame cannons the Wolves use in their player intro. (check youtube)
tryin to find more.
this is on macmasks, it's got images of Wendell Young and Freddie Braithwaite former Wolves goalies.

Actually, the team is just "Jokerit" which translates literally to "Jokers". There is no city or town in Finland known as "Jokerit". In fact, Jokerit is based in Helsinki.
