They should not do a throwback if they cant do it right. Obviously in this wussified pc society you would not design a gun on a uniform today. However, this is a throwback from 1962 and that perspective should not be lost, and the Astros should include the gun.

I don't think not using images of guns on sports uniforms has anything to do with PC, It's got everything to do with common sense, BUT other than that I am in the rare position of agreeing with Tank. If you don't want to use a proper Colt45's throwback, don't use one at all.

No reason to take the gun off the uniform. Silly to do so, same with the Stoagies and the removal of the cigar.

If wearing these uniforms is ment to honor the past and those who wore them, what they are doing is a dishonor.
Just don't wear them.

I like watching this team play. I know they're overshadowed, as always, by the Rangers across the river, but for my money, few teams are more fun to watch than the Devils.

I was peeling a banana for my breakfast right as I clicked on this thread, and this was the first pic I saw. Scary. :oh:

This move still pisses me off. Either bring back the classy design in full, or just forget about it altogether.

Exactly. Either do it right or dont do it at all. You would never design a uniform like that in 2012, but this is a 1962 uniform and either have the gun on it like they did in 1962 or just wear the other Astros uniforms.

Speaking of replacements. I starting wondering about replacing the gun with a fantasy ray gun. After fiddling around a bit, I got this:

Very interesting concept, but I think that gun is too big and overshadows the wordmark. Also, even a hypothetical raygun shooting moonbeams would still get the lunatic fringe irate.

Hey! Rayguns don't kill people. They kill Martians.

You mean the one that gets in a huff about the non-existent "PC police"?

I wonder if this has to do more with Colt Manufacturing than with PC (which I agree is a worthless movement). If I remember right, that's what caused the whole mess in the 60's. Take a look at the logos...

That smoke is worth a number of lawsuits.

No more so than using an actual picture of the Colt .45 calibre Peacemaker in your logo... Or referring to yourself as the "Colt .45's" <- likely also trademark infringment...

Colt wanted to be paid for usage of the name. Team didn't want to pay, changes their name to the Astros.

I'm sure there's more legal entanglement than that but that's the essence.

They should just replace the gun with a walkie-talkie like Steven Spielberg did in the 20th anniversary release of E.T.

Specifically, MLB said it's up to the Astros to decide to use the gun or not. So if the gun is missing after tomorrow, it's because of new ownership.

But it's nice to see Bud come to his senses for once.
Go Astros!
Go Texans!
Go Rockets!
Go Javelinas!

Glad to hear this. Wear the gun once or twice (and maybe every few years thereafter) and then let it go back into history.

Lukas posted something about it in the UW comments. He gave a big shout-out to James Crabtree, who started the ball rolling on correcting this. Just goes to show you how much influence one man can have on an issue like this. Now, if we can get him on the M&N inaccuracies...

I have the feeling that MLB gave the Astros a hell of a check to move to the AL so that are not bothered by it.
