Eliminating the shootout in the NHL?

That is what is wrong with the MLS too many ties, I dont think there is a problem of extending OT to 10 minutes and than saying the game is a tie.

I see a problem extending a regular season soccer match beyond the 90+ minutes of play as it is unnecessary that a victor must be determined; unless, of course, you were a fan of MLS when they had the gimmicky shootouts in place.

In addition, MLS has sturdy "overtime" rules solely for the playoffs: 30 minutes of extra time (15 minute halves), followed by penalty kicks, if the score is still tied, in order to determine a winner.

I did goals scored in another thread. Shootouts since the lockout:

2005-06: 144 (11.6%)

2006-07: 164 (13.3%)

2007-08: 156 (12.8%)

2008-09: 159 (13.2%)

2009-10: 184 (15.0%) what up, Phoenix Coyotes

2010-11: 149 (12.1%)

2011-12: 138 (13.6%) and counting, on pace for 167

181 shootouts, or 14.7% of all games. That's too much shooting out.

I don't remember how many games were left when I took that count, but some very rough working backward would seem to say there were 216 games left on the schedule and 43 of them went to a shootout, so roughly 20% of the games in the last month were shootouts.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫
