capn89's NHL (03/27/2015 - Flames Stuffffff)

After not doing much for a while I got a little drive to play around with a template I'd been working on. You may or may not have seen the Panthers set before, it's pretty much the same, save for the template being cleaned up quite a bit. And yes, I went a little insane with the Lightning alternate. haha

Panthers: Sorry, but that "striping pattern" screams fill-tool disaster, à la Thrashers alt. It's way odd and doesn't look good. Also, get rid of that number font.

Sharks: Great Job! Probably one of the best Sharks concepts I've seen on here. I'm not sure if this was intentional, but the streaks on the arms look like shark fins.

Flyers: Not any big changes, but I like it. On the alt, however, make the "fl" look less like an "H".

Lightning: The silver/blue looks great. I LOVE the striping pattern on the alt. My only suggestions would be to make the alt pants and helmet blue as well as to put the primary logo on the alt. Also, on the primaries, I'd make the logo all-blue, because the silver parts blend too much with the white.

Fix the Flyers nameplates and that is the best concept I have ever seen for them.

I really like the Sharks and Lightning jerseys. The only thing I would change is on the lightning third, I would use blue pants and helmets. I might also ditch the silver numbers for the Lightning home and road, but thats a minor thing.

Cool stuff, I especially like the little lightning bolt in the trim on the 'Ning 3rds. (But why the bolts going upwards?) I think the player names are a little large and I'm not sure the knees look quite right on the socks.

For starters, thanks, as a whole, to everyone who replied, I appreciate it. Now on to a personal level.

great job on the lightning not one bad thing to say about it

Thank you. I personally like what the Lightning switched to this year, but with all the grief they get for looking like the Leafs I wanted to make something that kept them "classy" (at least with the home & away) while distinguishing them from Toronto.

I am really diggin' that white Sharks jersey! Awesome work!

Thanks. I was actually expecting the Sharks jerseys to get ripped into because they're outside of the box.

Thanks for your thoughts, especially since you went a bit in depth with your comments. re: Florida, the template is the old Flyers/Thrashers template, altered just a bit. I will see what I can come up with the next time around, same with the font. re: Sharks, like I said above, I was really expecting those to get ripped, so I am surprised they got come nice reviews. The striping was intended to mimic shark fins, to an extent. re: Flyers, the home and away are a mash-up of their current jerseys and their previous (original Reebok) set. re: Lightning, I'll give blue pants/helmet another shot on the alternate. I started off with them blue and just wasn't satisfied. I might try the pants a different way. I was going for a subtlety with the silver circle on the primary logo as to draw all the attention to the bolt. I don't think I would have ended up using silver in the jerseys themselves if I kept the logo one color.

Fix the Flyers nameplates and that is the best concept I have ever seen for them.

I don't know what but I've been a fan of the contrasting nameplates for the Flyers since they introduced them. It's kind of become a thing of theirs, just another reason for apposing fans to rip on them. Maybe I'll throw a set together with "normal" nameplates, though, just for show.

I like the Flyers' shoulder patch, and I love what you did to the Lightning.

Thank you. I might give the bell a shot on the alternate, for giggles.

i love the flyers and the sharks set (thank you for getting rid of the orange!)

the flyers remain somewhat traditional but modern at the same time (really diggin the alt) and the sharks' primaries are exactly what they should be wearing!

I never understood the addition of orange to the Sharks and I don't like how it looks either. Teal, black and silver is the way to go for them. Thanks for your comments.

Like I mentioned above, I will give blue pants/helmet a shot on the Lightning alternate again, see what I can come up with. I'll post the results. As for the silver numbers, I actually did go with two different versions and I felt the silver looked better and helped with my plan to distinguish them from Toronto.

This is one of the best templates I've seen, mind sharing it?

As Roger from American Dad might say, "Maybe baby." I've been thinking about posting the template for public use, but I'm having some issues with the jersey/pants/sock texture. You see, I have the template set up for use in Paint Shop Pro, but I add the texture in another, lesser known, program, but I can't for the life of me get it to carry over properly to PSP. I could release it for use without the texture, but I have to give it some thought. More likely than not, in one way or another, I probably will release it. The good news? It's paint user friendly! Because the actual template is 1646x1570 and I just shrink them down when I'm finished.

Thanks for the comments. Lightning bolts actually travel both ways. Obviously I didn't take the physics of lightning into account when designing the pants, just wanted to go with what I thought looked good, but if even if all designs had to be scientifically factual then, yes, it still is. :P As for the template, when/if I go into a reboot stage I will take the knees and such into account. :)

Something else that's weird is the use of the grey shark fin alt logo. The shark is black, but the fin is grey.

Did you try altering this one a bit?

Whatever is easiest for you. I think these concepts look great. I've experimented with a bunch of different templates and I am really impressed with the realism of yours. One critique might be to make the helmets a little bit smaller. Overall, great work.

Haha, excellent! I was wondering how long it would be until that Flyers script I did for you would show up in one of your concepts, Capn :)

These are all quite nice. I'd leave the nameplates on the Flyers the way they were originally just because of any team, the Flyers are the ones who 'have license' to pull off an alternatively colored nameplate.

The Lightning alt: in its original all-silver incarnation, I could imagine Paul Lukas taking one look at it in action and calling em skating garbage cans, either on his blog or his column, probably both. Essentially, the color of the helmet and pants would be detracting way too much attention away from the crest. I'd have to see it in action though, cus it seems to work for Niagra. In its second guise, though having two sets of blue pants isn't ideal, I'm reminded of how the Milwaukee Admirals' gray jerseys eventually grew on me before they dumped them in favor of black, only with a crest that doesn't suck.

Sharks: I've never felt their current jerseys were all that good, and the orange seemed out of place. Others have mentioned it, so I'll just say the shark fins were damn clever.

Never actually thought about the gray shark fin logo. I'll have to touch that up on the next go. I've altered a version of the logo you posted, so I would either give that a go or just alter the circle fin logo, which I like the look of more. Thanks for pointing that out.

Thanks for your thoughts. One reason the helmets are slightly bigger then, perhaps, they should be, is just to be able to show the number detail a little better. Smaller helmets mean smaller numbers means less detail means porkchop sandwiches means tell me do things I done runnin' means bah bah bah baah baaah.

Thanks a lot, both for the comments and doing up the script logo for me. I'm going to be honest with you, it'd been so long since I saved it to my computer I forgot who did it, so at least I can give you proper credit for it now. I appreciate it.

Thanks for your thoughts on the jerseys. re: The Lightning and the two sets of blue pants, I think there are a handful of teams out there that use alternate pants for their alternate jerseys, so I don't think it'd be too big of a deal. Better than, in my opinion, the way the Rangers use their normal red pants with an alternate that uses a much darker blue. You know how we are around here, picky about every little line and detail.

: : : :

I've got some new stuff coming up, but rather than just do one set at a time I'll probably wait until I have more stuff to share. Right now I'm working on the Ducks. I currently have 6 jerseys (2 sets) for them ready to share, but I have a third set I want to put together (<i>possibly</i> a 4th) before I post anything. It'll basically be two different sets of designs, just two color schemes (current vs retro). Have a good day, folks. :)

I absolutely think that the Sharks jerseys look fantastic, and I would not mind seeing them on the ice any time soon. The Panthers are a give-or-take brand of concept. They look clean to me, but that's just me. I think that while the Lightning jerseys are creative, they're just a little too messy for my taste (and not messy by means of disorganiztion, but in terms of being busy, if you will). Also, I'd have to say that although I love your attempt at including more than blue and white with the lightning, I'm not diggin' the silver. The Flyers, being as disgusting a team as they are :P , look magnificent, and I would have to say I prefer the nameplates to the plain jersey names. But that's just in my opinion. Great work!

I don't think, because thinking implies uncertainty. Therefore, I KNOW.

I've got 6 sets for you to have a gander at. Four sets for the Anaheim Ducks and two for the Pittsburgh Penguins. I also started a little blog called Icelines which you can also look through, comment and rate the sets. Anything new I come up with will be posted there first before the bigger batches show up here. As for the sets, here's a c&p from the blog.

Home & Away: Oh so Mighty! The NHL has never seen a color combination like the old Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and their eggplant, jade and silver and it's something I wanted to bring back, even if only in digital form. The base jerseys feature modern side panels and traditional sleeve striping that plays off of the look of the panels. As well, the duck with crossed hockey sticks is back!

Alternate: I went with a decidedly simple look for the alternate jersey that features the traditional three-stripe design and a faux-back-esque circular logo. The shoulder "AD" logo is a nod to the Mighty Ducks "MD" logo.

6947806452_876195f6dd_b.jpg

Home & Away: The current logos and colors grace the previous "Mighty" design seen in part 1, although the circular logo makes a recolored return as a shoulder patch.

Alternate: Considerably similar to the alternate jersey seen in part one, though the striping features extra lines to account for the bronze color.

6947806474_15db48f298_b.jpg

Home & Away: The "Mighty" colors and logos make another return, this time on a more traditional design. As well the home jersey is jade as opposed to eggplant.

Alternate: Basically the same jersey seen in part 1, with jade and eggplant swapping places.

6947806528_fca0cdd3a9_b.jpg

Home & Away: The same uniforms and logos featured in part 3, though the colors are less "Mighty" and more "ducky." Basically I took the team's current color scheme and replaced black with green. The hockey pants are also striped differently.

Alternate: The same as the alternate in part 3, though colored to fit the scheme of the current set.

6947806558_79de28cb66_b.jpg

Home & Away: The uniform design is meant to be similar in style to the Penguins pre-edge (2002-07) look sans-vegas gold.

Alternate: For the alternate I wanted to put something together that harkened back to Pittsburgh's pre-90's style, but in a primarily gold color scheme; something the Penguins have never done.

7093886437_5f4f98b513_b.jpg

Home & Away: The base jerseys are the same design as seen in part 1 though the gold and white are swapped so that gold is now the more prominent secondary color.

Alternate: This uniform is meant to reference the Penguins inaugural jersey striping modern black and gold.
