pmoehrin Posted April 9, 2012 Share Posted April 9, 2012 MSG was in talks to buy the Forum; I'm not sure if anything ever came of that.They did buy it and are looking to renovate it in the next few years.It will probably be turned into a concert only venue which it pretty much is now, but it still has the capability to host basketball and hockey games if needed. This is what you get with 2-3 million dollars of maintenance a year. I've been staring at that photo a good long while trying to wrap my head around the perspective. But if Astroworld, which was right across the street from the Dome, couldn't stay in business, what hope would we have of enjoying a far smaller indoor park?I like the idea of the movie studio but the state has been very stingy about funding anything but essentials (and the Governor's Mansion). So, while there are tax breaks, they don't have an active incentive for filmmakers like other states.During our bid for the 2012 Olympics, there was a plan to gut it and make it into the track and field stadiumBut yeah, anything besides being used as a storage closet like it is now.BTW- the local NPR station talked about this tour and said that they had very few lights on. What you are seeing there is the light streaming in through the windows of the dome.Astroworld closing had more to do with Six Flags losing money by the second than it did the park itself. And this is what was done with that landAny time I drive that empty field when Astroworld once stood, I boil with rage. The land was bought before the economy tanked so the apartments or medical center extension or whatever the hell they wanted to build there hasn't come about. It's not even being used as overflow parking for the Rodeo and it's connected by a footbridge over the freeway. Weird.Two probable reasons for that1) Rice Stadium was strictly a football stadium (as opposed to a multi-purpose arena), which probably made it more suitable for the biggest football game of the year.2) Rice stadium could hold more fans for football than the Astrodome. The addition will create 1,400 premium parking spaces, plus more storage at the Astrodome. Meantime, the upper levels of the Astrodome, which encompasses more than 500,000 square feet, will become available for redevelopment as well. Of course, a question on many people's minds will be how the county intends to pay for all this. According to Emmett's office, the money comes from three source, including $35 million or less drawn from the Harris County General Fund; approximately $35 million from hotel taxes (HOT) in Houston, and another $35 million from the Parking Enterprise Fund.
