Neon_Matrix Posted July 26, 2012 Share Posted July 26, 2012 Once again, I have the opportunity to knock two more ballparks off my MLB list and I couldn't be more excited! I've never been to Northern California before (only the South and primarily around LA) and really have no idea what I'm getting into. I'm hoping that some of you may have some advice on these parks, what's around them and where I should be looking to get seats to provide the best experience (like behind home plate at PNC... which was fantastic!). Additionally, I'd enjoy hearing about some must visit places in San Fran, San Jose and possibly Oakland... even though I don't intend on spending much time in the latter. It's quick, easy, and a fraction of the price parking will be.I'll be crashing at a hotel that's apparently 10 minutes from the airport... so I'm not sure if it's easy or possible to take BART from there to the park, but I'll be looking into it. I really have not yet had the chance to scope the geography of the area but I've been told I'll need to take BART in order to get downtown and that it's a 30 minute ride? Sound about right?I was REALLY hoping to see a Sharks' game, but, I'm 99% certain the pre-season games won't be occurring so I'm not worrying about that. Reason being is that BART is the main regional mass transit system. MUNI is for the city/county of San Francisco, SamTrans is for San Mateo County, where the airport is, and CalTrain is the regional train system which can get you from where you may be staying into the city as opposed to BART. As DFW said, they don't offer tours, but even if they did, it wouldn't be worth it. It's a dump that makes the Oakland Coliseum look like a shiny new palace. crashcarson15 Posted July 26, 2012 Share Posted July 26, 2012 As far as sitting at the Oakland Coliseum, sit in the second level (club level at most stadiums) right behind home plate. An absolutely great view.At AT&T, if you want views of the bay and of the Bay Bridge, sit up top down the right field line for a game. It's a really awesome view. (Although, I don't think you can go wrong at AT&T). If you get a chance to take a tour, they'll actually take you to field level and in the dugouts - pretty cool.Definitely take public transport to/from the game. It's hard to get any seat at AT&T for less than $30 no matter who they play. The A's seriously couldn't give away tickets. You won't find many better examples of a team that just isn't working in their current location than the A's. As for food, you MUST eat at Lefty Odoul's, which is at 333 Geary street. Its hoffbrau style with carvery sandwiches and they're fantastic. It's in Union Square just north of the ballpark. It's a quick walk, but it's also like a block over from the muni trains. The Coliseum's food selection has been pretty meh the last decade and there are no restaurants or bars around the stadium (there's not much of anything around the stadium). BlueSky Posted July 30, 2012 Share Posted July 30, 2012 I did the AT&T Park tour and it was pretty good. Eat at Boudin near Pier 39 and watch 'em make alligators out of sourdough. Feeling adventurous? Rent a bike at Blazing Saddles and bike the Golden Gate. You can take the ferry back from Sausalito. It's a blast.Alcatraz is pretty awesome but get tickets in advance 'cause both the day and night tours sell out days (sometimes weeks) ahead.Twin Peaks is an awesome spot to see the city and surrounding area.If you have any interest in WWII, the submarine USS Pampanito is right there near Pier 39 and the self-guided audio tour is very good. jgladding Posted September 8, 2012 Share Posted September 8, 2012 Oakland... Now that they are in the hunt, tickets will be more in demand but I imagine you'll find some fairly easy. Food wise, nothing outside the park, though the tailgating is decent. Probably best to plan on tailgating, inside it's pretty weak. The stadium itself is not great, it used to be okay before Al Davis ruined it. After the game head to Jack London Square for touristy stuff. SF... Good luck finding tickets! Late September, playoff stretch, you will pay for them, though inside the energy is electric. Giants fans are very passionate and times are good. Food, inside I'd recommend garlic fries, and in the outfield I'd recommend Orlando Cepeda's Cha Cha Bowls. Afterwards theres a mixture of bars across the street. Most people take transit in so tailgating is not recommended. If you can't get in to a game you have options... You can watch a few innings for free from an outside viewing area, or rent a kayak and puts around McCovey Cove. I've never done that but it's on my bucket list. Touristy stuff... It's San Francisco. The most beautiful city in the world! I'd just stay away from Pier 39, but hit Fishermans Wharf. You could spend weeks in the city and not find it all, just figure out where you want to go and do it.PS dress warmly, the fog rolls in and gets cold...
