2012 College Football Coach Changes/How Many Years Does One Give a Coach?

While there is a current season thread, there needs to be one regarding coaching changes here plus to discuss how long does a coach need to succeed.

There are seven FBS openings already and since the 2008-09 season there have been an average of 24 head coaching changes per year at the FBS level (firing, retiring, taking another job). This thread is an attempt to track these changes.

After the 2008 season: 22 coaching changes. Seven of those new hires are already gone (1 retire, 2 firings, 4 took other jobs).

After the 2009 season: 23 coaching changes. Five already fired and one other (Vandy) was an interim coach at the start of the season.

After the 2010 season: 24 coaching changes. Two coaches were interim (tOSU and UNC) and one already took another job (Ark. State)

After the 2011 season: 27 coaching changes with John L. Smith already ruled out as the permanent coach.

The current openings are (former coach in italics). New coaches in bold.

Arkansas: John L. Smith ---------> Bret Bielema [hired 12/4]

Arkansas State: Guz Malzhan [hired by Auburn 12/4]------> Bryan Harsin [hired 12/12]

Wisconsin: Bret Bielema [hired by Arkansas 12/4]------->Gary Andersen [hired 12/20]

If you think a coach is on the hot seat, list it. IMO, the list of to be fired coaches include:

Eastern Michigan: Ron English (10-38 in four seasons)

New Mexico State: DeWayne Walker (career 10-39 in four seasons)

South Florida: Skip Holtz (team has not improved)

Southern Miss : Ellis Johnson (in a season, they went from 12-wins to 0-12)

UNLV: Bobby Hauck (a late night loss @ Hawaii will make him 6-32 in three seasons)

USC: Lane Kiffin (AD Pat Haden said after the UCLA game that Kiffin would return, but after losing to ND he may have his voicemail full and the bigger question is who to replace him)

Washington: Steve Sarkisian (took over a o-11 team, but he is just 26-24 in four years going into a new Husky Stadium. They thought he would be better and spent $$$ for higher priced assistants and lost to a 2-win Wazzu.)

Wyoming: Dave Christensen (22-27 in four years and his tirade after the Air Force game didn't help)

The absolute minimum you give a coach is 3 years. And that's if he just does a flat out awful job and has something like 3 or 4 conference wins and isn't bringing in anything in recruiting that makes you think they can turn around. There are a lot of people that don't know what they're talking about that have been saying Tim Beckman should be fired at Illinois after just this season. Firing a coach after 1 or 2 seasons will just set a team back even further than they were before and makes the job even less attractive than it already is.

If Colorado head coach Jon Embree isn't gone after going 1-11 this season, he'll certianly be gone following the next. If he were showing any form of improvment it would be different. But four wins in two seasons is unacceptable for any Pac-12 Conference school. In fact, the Buffaloes are considerably worse now than they were under Dan Hawkins, which some thought to be impossible.

Steve Sarkisian is on his third bowl game after a long time of not very much for the Huskies. I think the job stays his until he himself finds something better (maybe back to USC?).

It's official now: Gene Chizik is out at Auburn

How do you fire the coach who won a National Championship two years ago?

What have you done for me lately

A lot of that championship can be attributed with Auburn's ability to land a single player just for one season. This season they didn't win an SEC game and was the first season where Chizik recruits were seniors. Not to mention that he's got the program under investigation and was not thought highly of at the time of the hire. Auburn is a great coaching destination, they'll be able to get a quality replacement for him.

Auburn's fired their last three coaches that had undefeated seasons. You've gotta recruit against Nick Saban. And there's a looming NCAA investigation.

Good luck!

But because it's an "SEC job", some sucker will take it.

Any frontrunners yet?

Auburn is most likely going to use a search firm in the process. DHR International, Parker Executive Search, Alden and Associates, Eastman & Beaudine are typically used for coaching jobs. Parker is located in Atlanta.

Auburn is paying over $11M in buyouts for Chizik and three assistants. They also need to hire a new Assoc. AD too.

Banker Bobby Lowder and Jimmy Rane, the owner of Great Southern Wood (aka YellaWood) will probably be writing the checks.

They have a top ten class coming in for next year. We don't know yet what the sanctions will be if there are any. They probably have the top job available (maybe Arkansas) unless USC fires Kiffin.

Getting a new coach isn't going to help them. Colorado lost because they had the talent level of an FCS school. They need better players, not a good coach. Unless they somehow think the new coach can bring in a better recruiting class, to which I say to him, good luck. You'll need it.
