Joe Louis Arena (1984/1985)

Out of curiosity ... does anyone know why the red dots were placed there on the Joe Louis floor? It's the same location of their logo as on their Pontiac floor.

The only fact I'm aware of is that it held a college game between the Wolverines and the Titans in 1979. It was on December 12, 1979 (the very first event held on the arena).

to symbolize red wings hockey

Not a chance: they cover something that was on the court on their very first event, a NCAA game (watch the link of the picture above). It might be a commemorative logo or something.

Looking at the pic (and a very vague memory watching the event on the TV), I believe it was a Detroit Titians logos on the floor. It would have been covered by the NBA when the floor was used for the game.
