Names/logos cities have used multiple times

Enlight of this Hornets/Bobcats fiasco, I was thinking which cities have used the same name and/or logo more than one time.

There has been two Washington Senators teams, and the current day Nationals use the same "W" logo as the 2nd of the two Senators teams.

Ottawa has had two "Senators" teams as well, and they even have adopted the original logo used by the team in the 1910's.

Are there more instances of this?

The Colorado Rockies and Pittsburgh Pirates were both used for teams in the NHL in the past.

Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (CHL - 2018 Orr Cup Champions) Chicago Rivermen (UBA/WBL - 2014, 2015, 2017 Intercontinental Cup Champions)

King's Own Hexham FC (BIP - 2022 Saint's Cup Champions) Portland Explorers (EFL - Elite Bowl XIX Champions) Real San Diego (UPL) Red Bull Seattle (ULL - 2018, 2019, 2020 Gait Cup Champions) Vancouver Huskies (CL)

Alouettes de Montreal (different versions treated as one franchise by CFL)

St. Louis Cardinals (NFL/MLB)

Memphis Grizzlies (unofficial nickname for WFL Southmen in the 70s)

The Texans moniker has been used multiple times throughout the state.

Miami Marlins were a former minor league team.

This has happened a lot in MLS: Sounders, Timbers, Earthquakes, Impact, and Whitecaps are all names from previous leagues.

Not just that: save for the Quakes, they're all the same franchise continued at a higher level.

Then again, except for the Impact, those were all 70s-NASL names too so your point still stands.

MLS teams are odd. The league itself does not recognize any of the teams histories prior to '96, but the teams do.

Baltimore has used the Colts name twice (CFL/NFL)

Actually three times. There was a Baltimore Colts team in the AAFC. That league folded in 1949; and three teams came into the NFL: the Colts, the 49ers, and the Cleveland Browns. The Colts folded after one year; then a new expansion team was founded a few years later, which became the second team to use the name Baltimore Colts. (Incidentally, the AAFC also had teams called the Buffalo Bills, the New York Yankees, and the Brooklyn Dodgers; so add all of those to the list of names used multiple times.)

The Baltimore CFL Colts (later Baltimore Stallions) had three stars in their logo to signify that this was the third iteration of the name "Colts":

There are two honourable mentions:

* the Arena Football League's New York Knights and the WLAF's New York/New Jersey Knights:

* the Jersey Devils in the Eastern Hockey League; and the NHL's New Jersey Devils:

In looking up the EHL, I discovered that they had a team in the 1940s called the Baltimore Orioles. The AL's Baltimore Orioles took that name in 1954, when the the St. Louis Browns moved to Baltimore. (Oh -- the Browns franchise had the name "Milwaukee Brewers" in 1901! So, there's another one!) The original Baltimore Orioles were the legendary American Association and NL team of the 1880s and 1890s. Also, the AL had a Baltimore Orioles team in 1901 and 1902, before it moved to New York. And, between 1903 and 1953, that name was used by a minor league baseball team. So that name has been used many, many times.

And I was reminded that there was a Long Island Ducks team in the EHL, as there currently is in the Atlantic League, an independent baseball league:

Finally, in view of the fact that the talk of the return of Charlotte Hornets name started this thread, we should remember that the WFL had a team with that name, after the New York Stars moved there:

  • 3 weeks later...

The Mets' "NY" cap logo is the same as the one used by the Giants before they moved to San Francisco. And the Mets' original caps were Dodger blue. (Some of them still are.)

Both the Cincinnati Reds and the Chicago Bears use a "wishbone" C. (The Cubs have also used this in the past.)
