MLB All Star Voting Needs Some Re-tooling

So far this year, it looks like there will be quite a few all star game snubs. Seems like more than usual to me. This has all come about because I am an avid Cardinals fan and someone who just loves the game of baseball. All star game voting seems to be ridiculously flooded with bandwagon fans and people without an ounce of baseball knowledge who vote solely based on big names that they recognize but may not be having a good year at all. Pablo Sandoval comes to mind, who is leading his position in voting. Also it just irks me to no end that Yadi, who is a superior player to Posey, both offensively and defensively, is still behind him in voting.

I understand the fans need to be involved but there are so many uninformed "fans" out there that it doesn't allow players like Matt Carpenter and Jed Lawrie to receive the recognition they deserve. In my opinion, the player with the best season, not the biggest name deserves the vote. I think the players and managers need to be the primary influence in voting. Am I way off base here? I'm curious to know if anyone shares my opinions or has a different opinion or a more detailed or different voting system.

Sorry for the length of my rant and please let me know what you guys think.

Nuke "This time it counts", bar All Star game appearances from consideration in contracts in the next CBA, and we're done.

Why is it always Cardinals fans who bitch about ASG voting? It's the same thing EVERY year regardless of who's leading. The results start to come out, and Cardinals fans moan constantly. It's as likely as the sun rising.

Compare the numbers of Yadi and Posey for this season and tell me what you honestly think? And that's the only Cardinals one that irritates me.

But how the hell is Sandoval leading at third? I haven't seen the recent AL vote but the last time I did I think there were a few questionable leaders. It's all a popularity contest now. For crying out loud, Derek Jeter was on the ballot and he hasn't even played this year.

I'd say let the fan vote be for a spot on the team, not the starters. Let the managers decide who to put out there. I also agree with removing the "it counts". Ruined the whole thing.

Matter of fact, why do they still bitch about stuff from nearly 30 years ago?

I mean, they've won two World Series in the last six years, won three pennants in the last ten, won five pennants in nearly 30 years, have had the luxury of seeing Pujols in his prime, and have seen their team make 12 playoff appearances in that span. All including the facts of being the worst regular season team to be world champs (2006), and taking advantage of a couple of Braves choke-outs (2011 and 2012).

And yet they still bitch about Denkinger to this day? I'd gladly take St. Louis' recent history over that of the Dodgers in a heartbeat.

I understand that. But the theme is to see the initial polling results for the ASG released, followed immediately by a barrage of Cardinals fans complaining about poor representation and how the system needs to be fixed. I've been a baseball fan since I was a young kid, and it's the same situation. EVERY. SINGLE. YEAR.

I don't normally harp on Cardinals fans, I love the team, and I actually buy the whole "classiest fans in baseball" line. But this is one annoyance I've always had with their fans. If you've got such a problem with it, then actually vote!

I have voted . . . a lot. I'm just saying the system is flawed and I think there is a better way to go about picking players for the All Star game.

Molina: .352 Avg, 4 HR, 36 RBI, .882 OPS, 2.9 WAR.

Posey: .316 Avg, 8 HR, 41 RBI, .905 OPS, 2.6 WAR.

Fan voting is dumb. But in this instance, it's a pick 'em. Both guys are having great years. Brian Kenny and Tom Verducci discussed it today on MLB Now or whatever show it was and they couldn't decide between them.

I don't harp on Cards fans for their bitching, since All-Star players only play about an inning or two anyway. While there are other things I hear them whine about, voting on the ASG is a universally hated topic from all fans, but it's also a moot point, since managers tend to pick the players they believe will win for their league the coveted home-field advantage at the World Series. So it's not like the 4 or 5 Cardinals that are voted in actually do end up playing, all because of a manager's preference.

But fan voting only goes so far. It only amounts to 20% of the decision, and the true effect of fans voting is in deciding the last 1-2 players in, the week before the actual game.

What, you guys aren't thrilled with having Aunt Lucy from Milwaukee choosing the All-Star starters for an exhibition game that determines which team will host Game 7 in the World Series?

They should just leave it up to the experts....the cast from American Idol.....

Umm, the fan voting decides the entire starting line-up. The managers/players and "Final" fan vote only determine the reserves (manager picks all the pitchers including the starter).

Agreed. Fan voting needs to go away. It does nothing but placate the lowest common denominator. This isn't a democracy, it's baseball. Let people who are informed and have a clue what they're voting on actually decide this (players, managers, GM's etc...).

This isn't a baseball thing. It's a TV ratings thing.

If MLB was stupid enough to let the players/managers/etc choose who'd play, nobody'd watch. This entire thing is an exercise in getting people to watch a baseball exhibition with no immediate benefit to the winners (and certainly none to the viewers). You have to give people a reason to watch, thus: The fans choose.

Despite baseball's meticulous statistics-driven chunk of fandom, the majority of average fans are your beer-chugging, nut-scratching half-illiterate schmoes who only know who they see on the occasional sportscenter.

Perhaps your first indication that it's a sham should be that the ballots are distributed a month into the season.

As you get older you'll stop worrying about popularity contests, like MLB All-Star votes and NBA MVPs.

Give it the attention it deserves, and save your stress. Yadier Molina doesn't need to win the vote for validation. He'll be on the team.

People bitched about too many SF players in the ASG last year, and then the Giants players basically won the game by themselves.

That time it counted!

This is actually a moot point since the Giants would have had home-field advantage, anyway, in any of the three most noticeable determining factors:

-If HFA was determined at the All-Star Game, as it is right now, the Giants had it for the NL winning the game (current system).

-If HFA was determimed by better regular-season record, the Giants (94-68) would have had it over the Tigers (88-74).

-If HFA was rotated annually between the two leagues, the Giants would have had it over the Tigers, since the NL had the home-field in an even year (past system).
