Most dull/boring sports month of the year

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. So it's start of July, and to me, other than baseball and soccer season, I'm not really into sports right now.

It's not an even year, so there's no Summer Olympics nor FIFA World Cup. Both the NBA and NHL seasons have ended, NFL players haven't exactly returned to playing mode just yet, and as we're in the "dog days" of summer, no one generally talks about baseball's standings until mid-August. The only month which I can think of as this dull is February after the Super Bowl, but at least there's knowing that pitchers and catchers report for spring training and both the NHL and NBA seasons are in full swing, alongside NCAA basketball picking up for March Madness. Then there's the Daytona 500 for you NASCAR junkies. And every four years, there's the Winter Olympics to pick up the pace.

And this is for people who follow numerous sports. I can't imagine those moods for those who are following only one sport, and how they cope with the end of their season.

So I ask: what is considered the most dull/boring month of the year for sports? And are we in it right now?

I can see from your sig that you are a Galaxy fan so maybe you can try focusing more on the MLS until a sport that interests you more starts to generate some buzz again.

February.

The football season just wrapped up, I no longer have a hockey team to follow closely, the basketball season is starting to feel a little long, and baseball games that count are still over a month away.

Thankfully, that's when we usually head to the mountains for a relaxing getaway for a long weekend.....

I'm not calling out MLS and say that they're boring, but it's something about seeing two straight titles and being the most successful club in the league's history which sets fatigue in seeing what else can the Galaxy do now.

I mean I know about the incentive about being the 1st three-peat champion in MLS history, and I have followed them from time to time, but after these last 4-5 years starting with Bruce Arena whipping the team into shape, and seeing other stars bloom as Donovan's playing time begins to wane, I can say that this run as been a success, though I can only see other teams get better down the road. I'll try to clamour all I can from their current run, but there's a certain limit to this.

Besides, my interests lie first and foremost right now with the Dodgers, since they're the only team remaining in which I have never seen a championship won in my lifetime. Between them and the Galaxy, my attitude towards their seasons are different.

While the Galaxy can sputter within the season, they've proven to me that they can still make a plausible MLS Cup run, like how they were out of sync early last year and still became cup champions. So I can follow them on a part-time basis and know that they will still do well. As for the Dodgers, since I've never seen them win a World Series, anything they do compels me, so more attention goes towards them at this time.

July. Unless you're a huge interleague baseball fan, in which case you aren't really a baseball fan.

I suppose July because MLB races get a bit more interesting in August. But NFL preseason does not add anything for me. In fact, it almost could put August above July as worst, because sports media treats the games like the Super Bowl and it's an extra month of "all NFL all the time" I could do without.

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

I tend to agree. While February now has four significant big event days; that is all: Super Bowl, Daytona 500, both NBA and NHL ASGs. Regular season NCAA basketball and hockey are active, but their tournaments trump their importance.

I agree since both July and August have events which are week long. July has Wimbledon, The (British) Open Championship, and Le Tour in addition to the MLB ASG. Then again, I really start following MLB after Flag Day.

August has the PGA Championship, start of the US Open tennis, and NFL training camps.

I can understand that they are only 1 title ahead of DCU (who are terrible right now) and I say the hopes of being that first 3-peat champs.

As for the bolded part just replace Dodgers with Knicks and you pretty much have me in a nutshell.

Overall, there is less going on in July than February. July contains the only two days on the American sporting calendar where there is no games in the big four sports (the two days post-MLB ASB).

But I'll go with the sentiment that says February here. To me, NBA regular season means nothing. Unless there is an ultra-marquee matchup in the beckons (like Heat-Spurs/Thunder), I'm not going to care. There is usually a national hockey game on Monday-Wednesday, and I'll usually watch that if it involves a team like the Blackhawks or Kings.

On the whole, though, February (and first half of March) takes the cake because it is the only time of the year where I can very easily go days without watching live sports. I'm a total baseball junkie, and I'm usually watching at least two games a night and keeping close tabs on many others. By virtue of being the everyday sport, it doesn't leave me time to just ignore it for days at a time. It's not kosher to me. But that kinda/sorta dead spot in the late winter month? Yeah. It's not hard for me to just say :censored: it and tend to my own life necessities.

To that end, I would also very quickly argue that, for sports enthusiasts such as ourselves, having those couple proverbial dead spots on the calendar is a necessary evil. We'd probably get burn out from watching multiple sports on a daily basis.

Can't be July. Baseball every day. (There are minor league games during the MLB All-Star break off days.) Best time of year for me, as there's no NBA and NHL to distract (legitimately - after all, it's the playoffs) and the weather should be great. Also: Trade deadline.

Then again, I care about the NFL less and less every day. That's why I stopped watching ESPN. They'd rather talk NFL in July than MLB. Guess they found it boring, too. But to each his own. I don't think there's a "right" answer.

I have to agree that July is the dullest month of the year sporting wise. The first week is alright with the beginning of free agency in the NHL and NBA, but it's becoming pretty irrelevant these days with many players just re-signing long term with their teams. Boring! Baseball games don't matter too much during this period and the NFL is in the period between mini camps and training camp. Both of these pick up towards the end of the month with the trade deadline and training camps opening up. European soccer teams only playing a few warm up friendlies and sure, there's Champions League qualifiers going on but do you really give a :censored: about a match between the Armenian league champion and the San Marino league champion? The matches with the big clubs don't start until August. So yeah, July is the dullest month for sports across the board.
