Rams Exec: "Complete Uniform Change" Might Happen

Forgive my ignorance, but is there talk of them returning to LA? I though the rumor-mills had the Chargers going there eventually.

Either works for me actually, but I agree...the Rams in gold would look great.

The Rams are embroiled in stadium negotiations with St. Louis now. There's a thread on the Sports in General board, but the short answer is that the city is obligated to build them a new park, many of us don't think that will happen, and they move to year-to-year lease after next season.

As for the Chargers, they're likely candidates too, but that in no way precludes the Rams from moving. If LA gets a stadium built you can be pretty sure that it'll host an NFC team and an AFC team before long.

LA continues to be nothing more than the ultimate stadium bargaining chip for the league. The two most recent proposals are financial pipe dreams as both industry and downtown required a current owner giving up a minority share below market value. The chargers have a bad relationship with roski (industry) and aeg (downtown) has essentially killed their own proposal for an undersized stadium shoehorned next to staples and the convention center that would have zero tailgating. Now chavez ravine is back on the table for the 5th time.

There's a big reason why the nfl will not be in LA anytime soon:

1. The ultimate stadium bargaining chip.

2. TV ratings are already through the roof. Zero blackouts and typically the best 3 games available every Sunday. There is no economic benefit to the league to relocate the team other than the relocation fee which is a one time deal.

3. Metro LA is at least 40% transplants. People here hang onto their hometown teams and the city has adapted to that. The sports bars are absolutely packed at 9:30am on Sundays with die-hards. You can find a Pats/Bears/Eagles/Stillers bar a few miles from your house and hang out with the same nutjobs you did back in the day and not miss a beat.

4. The Raiders fans actually fly up to Oakland for the day to go to the games. Let's keep that going.

5. No taxpayer $$$. City/State won't give a handout for the privilege.

My idea to get the nfl back into LA would be to host several MNF dates or the Thursday game. Angelenos love a primetime event and this would be perfect plus you already have so many transplanted fans that just about every matchup would be a sell out. The coliseum is finally being refurbished by usc which could make that idea actually feasible.

You make some good points but the league would be foolish not to come back to LA again with a team or two. Let's look at some of those.

1. Yes, it's a bargaining chip but if you keep playing it too much other cities won't believe it. Plus with a $1 billion price tag for new stadium it doesn't make financial sense for some cities to dole out that amount of money anymore. Especially if all they are getting is 8-10 NFL games a year.

2. Yes TV ratings are high but could probably be higher with a team to support. Thus increasing the TV rights deals value in the future. I kind of feel the NFL uses the allure of an LA returning when negotiating these deals only to drop it after the deals are signed. Acutely, if the networks like FOX or CBS asked for an AFC or NFC to be in LA to be included in there contract we might get this going faster.

3. Yes there might be 40% transplants but there are still 60% locals who don't have a local team to root for. So growing up you have to root for some other cities team and visit another city's stadium to see a game in person. For the second largest city in the US this is an embarrassment. Especially when you see a city like Jacksonville with a population of less than 1 mil and problems selling out keep theirs. (sorry Jacksonville but it's true).

4. Great for Raiders fans. Enjoy Oakland and that state of the art stadium you got up there!!

5. No taxpayer dollars makes sense!! It's ridiculous how often cities and states will dole out cash and prizes ( i.e. bribes) to woo owners who have the money to pay for the stadiums themselves. It's the worst kind of socialism, corporate socialism. LA and CA is smart to let private business fund a new stadium. The NFL greed needs to stop!!

Lastly, you idea of playing primetime or marquee games in LA makes sense especially when they are playing all these games in London already. I mean even a preseason game would be nice. (don't know why that hasn't happened yet). But bottom line is it;s time for NFL football to come back to LA again.

The thing with keeping LA as a bargaining chip is that eventually someone's going to take it. The Rams, Chargers, and Raiders are all in the hunt for new stadiums, and if they can't get new ones in the cities they're in then they're going to have to at least consider LA. And if St. Louis, San Diego, or Oakland can't (or won't) make it worth their time to stay they just might leave.

How funny would it be if by "complete change" they meant no more horns?

Honestly the ram head logo would look pretty cool as a helmet decal IMO. With that said no way in heck they ever ditch the horns.

Secondly. I like the idea of the Rams going back to royal blue & yellow, with yellow being the home/primary jersey color.

The Rams biggest problem is their horrible dome lighting. Nothing they wear will look good in that awful dome.

If only...

I prefer the dark blue and antique gold, but I think they need to lighten the shade of gold or do something to make it look more shiny and less khaki looking, particularly on the helmet.

Those looked great and I'd love to see them back, but I'd either do away with the pants stripe or make it a single blue stripe, maybe similar to what the Broncos have or even just a straight blue stripe? When they wore the blue jerseys, the white in the stripe was the only white on the uniform (except for the name) and it kinda looked out of place. It blended in a bit better with the white jerseys, but the racing stripes just seemed mismatched with the horns on the helmet and jersey.

That helmet would look great on Demoff's head as it was mounted on a pike outside the stadium.

Yeah, I've never liked carrying the horns over to the shoulders. Unlike the Eagles' wings, the beauty of the Rams' horns is that it's a literal interpretation.

But if they're going to overhaul, I'd like to see them return to brighter colors.

Excuse the concept here in the non-concept section (as well as the shameless self-promotion) but here's a way this awesome look could be updated...

I wouldn't mind a change to the royal blue and athletic gold (or navy and athletic gold) but they should just limit it t a palette swap. No need to mess with their current uniform template. It perfectly toes the line between classic and modern.

#80 in the old unis graphic is none other than Tom Fears.

(Long time CCSLCers think "Here comes the obligatory Saints reference...)

And since I'm never one to disappoint...he was the Saints' very first coach.

But back on topic, I think an update of the old Fearsome Foursome blue and white could work nicely if they added in plenty of yellow trim in the right places.
