Uniwatch reported this morning that all MLB teams will be switching from polyester game hats they wore this year to game hats made from the BP hat material. Ugh. Apparently MLB isn't happy with New Era because they got the NFL contract. MLB thinks it's hurting their hat sales. The article said Nike is making a full court press for the hat contract. I thought it's odd since Nike really isn't known for hats. I'm sure they would just source it out to New Era.

Ugh...the mesh??? Why? This is a horrible idea. Just give '47 brand the contract already. They're the only ones who know how to make a decent hat anymore...

Except for the 90% chance that the bill on a '47 cap is crooked or otherwise screwed up...

I got an email with the new Cubs jacket for next year in it and it used the simple CUBS wordmark (usually paired with a smaller Chicago above it, but not here) in white only. It stood out as odd to me, but it could be nothing. There was still red trim elsewhere, but maybe that's a direction they're headed. However, the BP looks the same in those leaks.

This?

That looks awful. I appreciate subtlety as much as the next guy but jeez... That's almost laughably bad.

That doesn't look real. For all we know it's just placeholder text until there's a reveal.

That's what it looks like to me. I mean.. the wordmark looks so out of place on that jacket.

Yeah I'm thinking you guys are right and that this is a placeholder. Now that you mention it, do you see the horizontal lines above and below the wordmark? I assume that's from them photoshopping this placeholder wordmark in?

Your experience is different From mine - I own a couple dozen '47 caps and have never had that issue.

New Era, on the other hand, has exactly that problem. I can't buy one of theirs without seeing it in person.

So is it true the Mariners will be ditching the teal and going with cream?

If so I hate this movie....

It's speculation as of right now, but the people speculating it are often right about these things...

When will we know if the Mariners are ditching the teal for cream?

Just so we're clear, I assume this is meant to mean that the Mariners will be ditching white for cream? I can't imagine they would go with white and creme.

I agree about New Era as well, but '47 isnt much better. I think you got lucky quite a bit. Take a look at Lids' site, and just look at '47 hats. Damn near every one of them looks screwed up...and these pictures are used for driving sales...! You'd think they'd use a good version.

You guys are crazy if you think New Era is going to lose the MLB contract. They've been the official supplier to Major League Baseball for about a century now, and even with the NFL contract, MLB hats are still like 75% or more of their sales.

The switch from poly to Diamond Era material freaks me out quite a bit, but I felt the same about the change from wool to poly, and I absolutely love the poly now so who knows. If they make the switch but keep production in the states then things could be ok. If they switch to making every freaking hat in China, then I'll have a HUGE problem.

How long has new era had the privilege of manufacturing the game-worn MLB caps? That'd be a huge deal if the MLB switches. Hard to imagine any manufacturer coming close to matching New Era's sales.

As for the material swap, that's an interesting move. Doesn't make sense to me though. And I hope those big and bold outlines and stitching don't transfer over to the everyday caps.

As for KC, i'd love to see a toned down powder set, pants and jerseys.

And Seattle... while I believe the Mariners have a decent set, i'd call it middle of the pack in relation to the 29 other teams. I see their set as a little dull with the dark green. Teal would much improve it.

I wouldn't mind a return to the former colors, blue and yellow, or something nautical, but I think they just feel a need for change because of their horrible play as of late.

Edit: bucfan partially covered my initial question. I knew they've had the rights for caps for a while.

I'm not a fan of them switching material. I do like the BP hat I own, but I wouldn't want every MLB hat I own to have it. Also is it cost efficient for New Era to make the MLB the diamond era material and NFL polyster?

As for Nike, I own an on-field LSU baseball hat and it's my favorite flat bill I own. It fit almost perfectly from the get go and it's broken in really well. I don't think they'll switch, but it wouldn't be a downgrade if they did.

Thats good to hear, I'm already worried about that... I assume if the MLB did go to Nike there would be no swoosh on the side? So on the field there wouldn't be too much of a noticible difference.

This sucks

I hate the BP material. If it's true that they will be switching it will be a terrible move. I don't know of any others, but I assume all of the blue hats look this way, but the material makes the Cardinals BP hats look washed out and faded in person. The color is not nearly as rich as the wool and poly hats. Also, if this is true, hopefully the embroidery style will not carry over to game caps because I think it looks awful. This is really disappointing. The only good thing that may come out of this is the current hats will be on clearance so maybe I could get one cheap.
