2014 MLB Changes (logo, uniform wise, etc)

The swoosh is on the back of the college hats. I would assume they'd replace it with the MLB logo, but I'm not putting it past Nike to not have their logo somewhere on the hat.

I don't think Nike would put it on there if MLB flat out said "no corporate logos on hats". New Era puts its logo on every hat except the on-field MLB style.

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

So if the BP hat is the new template (I don't think it's about heat like wool hats, it's about a cheaper material, but anyway) will the logo still be raised or will it be the negative space raised? The Pirates BP "P" looks horrid and so does the Detroit "D"

This. If they fix this then I would love this move. But if they don't, I'm gonna be annoyed all season

Hopefully you guys are wrong. BP caps are good for just that, BP. But the material has always felt cheap and chintzy compared to the onfield caps (wool or poly). If they made the change I would have bought my last MLB cap as I cant justify paying 35 bucks for a plasticy piece of crap BP style cap. As for leaving New Era I'd highly doubt it after a century.

Regarding putting manufacturer logos on MLB game caps: While I can't prove it, there is actually a by-law stating that such logos are prohibited on caps.

If this is the case, I see no real benefit for Nike to go after this business.

Nike's brand is built on its reputation as an innovator of athletic performance apparel and footwear. While hats are a critical part of baseball uniform, it's a stretch to call them "performance" apparel. Certainly Nike makes gear that isn't meant exclusively for performance, but in most cases that product is a brand enhancer -- something that showcases the Swoosh or a slogan of some sort. That wouldn't apply to MLB caps if the league prohibits manufacturer logos.

You could argue that it's just about generating revenue -- which it certainly would -- but I just don't see it moving the needle enough for it to matter to Nike. Then again, I've been wrong before.

What they should do, and it's something I've been hoping for since BP caps came out, is give the players an option to either wear the game caps in the traditional poly material, or the new BP material, similar to how they did it when the CoolBase jerseys came out. Other than the materials, the caps would be identical. It would be great for those long summer months, nothing would have to change in terms of branding, and it would give New Era another item to sell.

Looks like UniWatch may have been misled on this one. While MLB isn't officially talking, people from inside the league are talking and saying UniWatch is wrong. 5950 not going anywhere.

Given that it is tradition steeped baseball we're talking about I'm not surprised it was probably not true. Or if it was the fairly quick and generally negative backlash caused a quick 180 on MLBs part.

The 5950 isn't a huge tradition for mlb as teams used to procure hats from multiple vendors for decades before the new era exclusive. Also the 5950 doesn't have to "go anywhere" for new era to change the fabric but keep the same construction.

Given the excessive promotion of the BP cap this year (hell even the yankees wore theirs in a game to my shock) it's safe to say the wheels are in motion but new era and the league could always back out at the last minute.

I have to disagree. While MLB teams did have other manufacturers for caps such as Sports Specialties, New Era has always been the main supplier. Major League Baseball has been getting caps from New Era since the 1930s, and they've been using the 59Fifty since the 1950s.

We'll see, but based on SBJ/NBC's guy's quotes it sure doesn't sound like any wheels are turning to change the caps for 2014. Makes me wonder if some change was discussed and Lukas' source just ran with it as if it were definitely happening.

I got an email with the new Cubs jacket for next year in it and it used the simple CUBS wordmark (usually paired with a smaller Chicago above it, but not here) in white only. It stood out as odd to me, but it could be nothing. There was still red trim elsewhere, but maybe that's a direction they're headed. However, the BP looks the same in those leaks.

This?

That looks awful. I appreciate subtlety as much as the next guy but jeez... That's almost laughably bad.

That doesn't look real. For all we know it's just placeholder text until there's a reveal.

That's what it looks like to me. I mean.. the wordmark looks so out of place on that jacket.
Yeah I'm thinking you guys are right and that this is a placeholder. Now that you mention it, do you see the horizontal lines above and below the wordmark? I assume that's from them photoshopping this placeholder wordmark in?
Of course the image is photoshopped (most "catalog" images are these days) but that IS the Cubs' wordmark (pathetic, isn't it?) And this jacket was pitched as "buy next year's on-field jacket today." If I bought it and it doesn't look like the picture...

Thanks to Around the Horn for finding and posting the photo. I'll see if I can dig up the email for the exact wording.

Side note: I did notice in my mobile bookmarks that the Cubs were using the white wordmark on a blue background on their mobile site, but it has since been changed to the stitched "COMMITTED" ad theme with the cap C. And on a second side note, almost all in-house Wrigley graphics were using a stitched-looking version of the primary Cubs logo. Might be nothing but a marketing gimmick, but it was everywhere the regular flat logo used to be, so maybe it's a subtle moderization for some graphic uses.

I like the feel of the BP hats, but am I the only one who thinks the fit is a lot different compared to the regular polyester? The BP seems a lot bigger.

This is true. I had to go from a 7 3/4 to 7 5/8 in the Diamond BP. I actually like the way my Diamond BP cap fits, so whatever New Era does is OK in my book.

What I dont understand is why MLB is ticked off at New Era for getting the NFL contract.

I don't get it either. They're a hat company. What do you expect them to do? I guess MLB thinks it will hurt their sales because if someone wants a fitted 5950 they might buy a NFL hat, not an MLB hat.

BP caps are the only ones that fit me, size wise. It's still huge and boxy on the top, but with the on-field caps I'm in between sizes, either too big or too small. The BP cap fits me perfectly.

That being said, I still hate the logo treatment on them and don't want to see them take over as the on-field caps.
