8BW14
I hate when people say "Missour-uh". I had a teacher in high school who graduated form Mizzou who would "correct" anyone who pronounced it "Missour-"ee", drove me freaking nuts.I always pronounce it "Missour-"ee". I didn't know that was wrong. So does almost everyone I've heard say the word. That's the most common pronunciation and the best pronunciation as far as I'm concerned. It's a regional thing. Growing up in Kentucky, I knew some people (mostly with ties to the western part of the state) that would "warsh" clothes or talk about George "Warshington."It's absolutely annoying.Yeah here in Illinois it's usually older people who "warsh" stuff and I cringe every time I hear it. I've always kinda figured it was a vestige of a Scots-Irish accent.
martymcfry
I live in Washington and I've never heard it pronounced "Warshington". The only way I've heard it pronounced is "Washington" and my 5-year-old brother once calling it "Washton".
TruColor
Living in Minnesota these last few years have made me overly sensitive to the accent here. Makes me crazy to be honest. I hear this a lot - "thanks" becomes "theenks". "Thank you" becomes "Theenk yaw". "I have to GOH. Have a nice DEEAH."
FiddySicks
I had a room mate from Minnesota and he tried constantly to cover up his Minna Sohhhda accent, but there were times when it would come out with a vengeance. Every time he went to the store he always talked about where we should store the extra grohhshrey baygs. Kevin W.
Where the hell do you get "warsh" from anyway? There isn't an R in the word! Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (CHL - 2018 Orr Cup Champions) Chicago Rivermen (UBA/WBL - 2014, 2015, 2017 Intercontinental Cup Champions) King's Own Hexham FC (BIP - 2022 Saint's Cup Champions) Portland Explorers (EFL - Elite Bowl XIX Champions) Real San Diego (UPL) Red Bull Seattle (ULL - 2018, 2019, 2020 Gait Cup Champions) Vancouver Huskies (CL)

I have relatives there and it's quite obvious on certain words and letter sounds. After watching movies like Fargo and Grumpy Old Men and then visiting a few times, the accent is a real thing. I like to do it to mess with people (we all do), but I've never heard one in the wild beforeI hear it every day...people on the street, most of the local TV personalities, etc. I think the issue is (like my wife and her family) that Minnesotans aren't hearing it/aren't aware of it. Sure it was overly exaggerated in Fargo, but the reality is that the majority of people here have it. And if you're not from here, it's REALLY noticeable. Harmening
With Minnesotans, about is pronounced a-boat. Anything that would have an 'out' pronunciation would be 'oat' or 'oot'.

Ya I'm from North Dakota and even when I go to Lincoln, NE, I feel we sound the same but they think I have the craziest accent. It's definitely there, we are just so used to it. Still MIGHTY
My California-centric contribution:No one says "Cali". If you hear someone say that, shank them. No one says this.As for something actually college football related, USC is USC to us. No one calls it "Southern Cal" like I've heard numerous times from midwestern/east coast TV folk. Also, my grandmother (from New Jersey with German heritage) says "warsh" and "Warshington" (as well as "drawh" for "drawer") | ANA | LAA | LAR | LAL | ASU | CSULB | USMNT | USWNT | LAFC | OCSC | MAN UTD |

Thank you for confirming that. It's always rubbed me the wrong way because it felt like something midwestern "try-hards" would say in an attempt to sound cool. And my grandmother has said warsh my whole life. Shortly after I learned how to read I can remember asking my mom why her mom put an R in that word and I'll never forget my mom responding by saying "old people say it that way and nobody knows why".
