Well that sucked :(

Anyway, good on the Galaxy for winning with the rules. Not a huge fan of the away goals rule at all -- I get it's supposed to speed up Game 1, but it grinds Game 2 to a halt, which is what happened the second Galaxy scored its first after the half.

I still think the Revs are the team to beat and do hope they punch the Galaxy in the fact next week.

I don't care how common it is thoughout the world, what a monumentally stupid rule "away goals" is. I almost rather them just flip a coin.

That's the kinda stuff that makes soccer a hard sell to me. In what sports can your team win the game and still get eliminated from the playoffs?

To borrow a tweet I retweeted: the Sounders won, which means they tied, which means they lost. I don't want to get into an anti-soccer debate, but that's really stupid.

What's wrong with playing an extra period and penalty kicks if necessary based on the aggregate goals? I get aggregate goals!

Can you imagine CenturyLink Field with an extra period of sudden death against their biggest rivals? A rival who beat them at home earlier this season by three goals? That would've been such an epic scenario.

But no, the Galaxy scored more goals after a night at the Holiday Inn. Just give it to them.

How tremendously lame.

I don't think that's any better. There's no reason they can't make it a sudden death period or even a shootout in the event that aggregate goals are even. The idea of "Road goals" is seriously just about the most arbitrary thing you can possibly use to determine a winner. It's so subjective that it's almost ridiculous. I don't really buy the idea of home field advantage being enough of determining factor even in leagues like the EPL or La Liga, but especially not in the MLS.

It would be like if the final Redskins Cowboys game of the season determined the winner of the NFC East, Dallas won the game, but then they turned around and said "Oh well, Washington kicked more field goals on the road than Dallas did, so they win the division."

I'm glad that soccer in the states keeps a lot of the traditional structures and rules that they have in Europe, but things like this whole "road goal" nonsense is something that they really could afford to adjust.

I'm perfectly fine with aggregates, but the away goal rule is stupid. Just go to extra time/penalties if the teams are still tied.

This is why Soccer can not be taken seriously, aggregate goals and a tie breaker in the PLAYOFFS!!

At least have overtime, seesh or better yet single elimaination. Until then MLS is a disgrace

In general, yeah, I think away goals are stupid.

There's merit to it though in that it promotes playing an attacking brand of the game on the road. From the perspective of trying to engage viewers, encouraging teams to try and score on the road is a good thing.

But then again, it's a relic of a time before the penalty shootout was invented. I don't like introducing it out of the blue.

As for alternatives? Single-elimination? No thanks. That'd be more of a farce and devalue the regular season even more.

My favorite answer is still the "World Cup-style group" one. Throw the E1, E3, W2, and W4 teams in to one group, the opposite in the other. Higher seed hosts all games (as a reward for finishing well in the regular season), top two from each group advance to the semi-finals.

But hey, the rules are the rules — and ultimately, the teams seem fine with them. Seattle may have gotten to this point because of the benefit of away goals — it's tough to feel too hard done by them now.

The thing with series played in two legs is that there is no satisfactory answer on ways to settle things in the event of an aggregate tie. Penalties are basically a combination of luck and guess work and away goals seems rather arbitrary. In a perfect world these things should be magically settled in extra-time before penalties but it they aren't.

Its a disgrace it means you ae better off finishing fourth and eeking out a tie and making sure you score on the road, only in soccer can you win by losing.

If we're all in disgust over the away-goals rule, blame everyone associated with the Red Bulls. From supporters groups to head coach Mike Petke, New York complained about not having such rule in last year's East Semifinals vs. Houston.

Now we have it and apparently, people are bitc#ing about wanting to go back to a straight, two-game aggregate series.

How's about after the aggregate is tied after 180 minutes, both teams go to an NHL-style, sudden death overtime? We replace the triviality of away-goals and the luck factor of penalty kicks. And it was in place for the MLS Cup Playoffs (2000-2002), before the league decided to formally adopt FIFA's extra-time interpretation (two 15-minute OTs then penalty kicks) from the Laws of the Game in 2003.

Agreed. I don't think the away-goals tiebreaker is terribly "arbitrary", but even if it is penalty shots aren't any better.

Finding it hard to feel sorry for Seattle here. They've lived by the away-goals rule so far, while LA blew away their competition to advance this far. Besides, it's certainly not easier for the away team to score at CenturyLink than it is at the Home Depot Center. LA won this one, fair and square.

That makes sense. I actually became a Basketball fan after playing NBA 2k in 2006.

Makes sense to me, too. The game is an amazing commercial for the sport.

But if the US ranks #2 in sales of FIFA, then I wonder what country is number one?

England?

Yeah, there isn't the best way to end a two-game series if it's tied, but I think for MLS's purposes, extra time + penalty kicks would work better. The away goals thing is implemented in Europe because all these elimination competitions happen within the course of their regular league seasons. They can't be having extra long games in the middle of the week because it would tire the teams, they have flights to catch, places to be, and effects everthing else. It's kind of the same reason we don't have continuous OT in the NHL's regular season.

However, with the MLS, these are the playoffs after the season. The games are once a week and there's nothing else going on. They could have extra time. They could have the penalty shootouts. I think it would appeal more to (or at least be understood more by) the casual American audience, and it's not like it's unheard of in world soccer. I mean, I understand it and I know of it's use around the world, but how many casual or new fans that went or watched last night and said, "Woo! Sounders won! MLS Cup, here we come! ...wait? They're not advancing? Soccer is dumb" ? I imagine a fair amount.

They didn't release that fact. But it's surely Germany or GB.

I'm a simple person, I have a pixelated David Beckham as profile photo since 2010.
