This was by far the best race this season, hands down. Now that was one of the best battles I've seen for the lead in a long time. I think "Mr. Smiley" has got the talents to be a champion someday. Now onto the long break & to see what is in store for silly season. Belgium will be next.

Yep. Definitely a great race. Probably not a 'classic' but does make you question why Bernie assembled a meeting with all of the Team Principals before quali to discuss making the sport 'more interesting'. Just look what happens when you let them race.

It's also nice to see that when the old guard (Alonso, Kimi, Button etc.) inevitably leave over the next few seasons, we have great young talent in the likes of Ricciardo and Bottas to step right in.

Question for the fans here: how do you feel about the annoyingness of cameras/networks cutting to shots of driver wives/girlfriends, or WAG's?

The final few laps of the Indy 500, you saw that alternating coverage of a WAG of one of the drivers gunning for the win at the end.

As a NASCAR fan, it's never that bad. Do open-wheel wives/girlfriends usually get this TV treatment?

It's not like Indy/Formula 1 fans are so familiar with these mysterious women- for instance, in NASCAR, you didn't see a single alternate split-screen shot of Jeff Gordon's wife Ingrid when he won the Brickyard.

When Kevin Harvick won his first ever race at Atlanta, the number of seconds a tiny split-screen showed DeLana- barely 10 seconds.

I can only really speak about F1. It is a kind of travelling circus where everybody knows everybody. This is reflected in the TV coverage with the presenters and pit reporters often stopping and chatting to people while they are filming.

There is definitely a huge celebrity/glamour culture that has always been present in the sport too - especially at Monaco. Panning shots to WAGs, pop stars, movie stars or even any other celebrities have been part and parcel of the coverage ever since I have been watching from the mid 90s onwards.

I don't mind it when it is 10 seconds or less and relevant to what is going on. e.g. that driver just winning or crashing out badly. It can add a human element to a very technical sport.

Well yeah, they're not going to cut to Jeff Gordon's wife at a meaningless race that nobody cares about.

It's been that way at the 500 for a long, long time. I go back to some of the 500s I watched in the build-up to the race this year and it's very present there. Check out this clip from the 1989 thriller:

Bavarian state prosecutors confirmed to the district Munich court on Tuesday that the sport's commercial rights holder has offered to make the payment, believed to be the largest in German legal history.

The 83-year-old Ecclestone was accused of bribing former banker Gerhard Gribkowsky during the sale of a major stake in the motor sport business eight years ago.

He reportedly paid Gribkowsky £26 million ($44m) to ensure that a company he favoured will end up with a stake in Formula 1.

The trial started in April and was expected to drag on, but a settlement has now been reached with the state prosecutor revealing that Ecclestone's advanced age and other circumstances supported the acceptance of a settlement.

When asked by Judge Peter Noll if he could make the payment within a week, Ecclestone's defence attorney Sven Thomas replied "that's do-able".

Does anyone see the irony of using a bribery to end a bribery trial? Typical Uncle Bernie...

Speaking with Hulman & Company CEO Mark Miles​, RACER has confirmed IndyCar's plan to open the season with two international races is coming closer to reality. Those specific weekends target visits to Dubai in the Middle East, and a return to Brazil in Brasilia.

"We're very optimistic about having Brasilia on our calendar the first weekend in March next year," said Miles. "And we're pretty optimistic about having one that's not in Brazil before that, so if we get both done, we'd be starting in the first half of February – six or seven weeks earlier than this year – and those international races would not affect the number of U.S. weekends because we expect that number, at least that number of weekends, to stay the same."

Given the contentious relationship between TMS and the series, declining attendance figures at the Fort Worth facility, not to mention Toronto's place as IndyCar's only stop in Canada, keeping the double-header street race north of the border could be the priority in early June.

If the Texas date is taken over for one year by Toronto, it's unclear whether the oval will appear elsewhere on the schedule, or if it would signal the end of a relationship dating back to 1997.

The Mike Lanigan-promoted Houston street race double-header is expected to return – hopefully not at its late June date where, heat, humidity and rain provide a sweaty bouillabaisse to stew in for days. Pocono's owners seemed mixed on having the series back; Iowa's owner told RACER's Robin Miller he wants to continue with IndyCar; Mid-Ohio is coming off of a strong fan turnout last weekend; Milwaukee is slowly rebuilding its fan base; Sonoma has become a traditional stop on the tour and Fontana seems to be growing a new open-wheel tradition to close the season.

Depending on whether TMS continues (or one of the other events is shuttered, which seems likely), the NOLA Motorsports Park road course in Louisiana could be the obvious fill-in event. With Andretti Sports Marketing set to promote the race, it's already being billed as the "Indy Grand Prix of Louisiana" on its website.

The 2014 IndyCar schedule is spread across 15 event weekends, meaning Miles' comment about maintaining no more than 14-15 weekends would involve dropping at least one current event to accommodate NOLA.

"I think there will be maybe one new venue, but that's not all decided," he said. "I don't think you'll see three, but possibly one."

Asked if the taxing grind of the 2014 schedule would be taken into account when finalizing the next calendar, Miles suggests building in extra downtime while IndyCar looks to recapture its former glory would be a setback.

Wow I can't believe that the judge in this case is going to let Bernie get away with this: bribe for a bribe. This is atrocious on the highest order. I think this would be a great time for Uncle Bernie to leave the FOM to a rightful heir (many names getting passed around in the paddock) and enjoy the rest of his pug life in Monaco.

What next will Uncle Bernie will do...

Yup, Power won on an oval... RHR had a good day considering he resigned with Andretti but then his car just went out with a mechanical issue. Both Newgarden & Carpenter (future teammates due to the merger?) also had some good showings... Next up, wine country in Sonoma... I can't believe the IndyCar season is almost over... So will be the Formula one vacation...

That is massive news for Toro Rosso as well as F1 in general. Verstappen is a kid with A LOT of talent and thankfully he was plucked by Red Bull. I think Red Bull will develop his talent gradually over a number of seasons, and can be even more successful than his father in the sport if everything lines up for him (106 starts, 2 podiums, 17 points). I don't think that there will be that much pressure on him only being 17, which allow him to get accustomed to F1 life both on and off the track. F1 is totally different than F3 Europe. Great news!

Corvette DP getting revised?

RACER has learned GM Racing is considering a revision to its C6-themed Corvette DP bodywork for next season, with alterations to the nose, tail, and general styling to more accurately represent the new Corvette C7 model. It's believed a final decision could be made by the end of the month. Reached for a response on Tuesday, a GM Racing representative declined to comment.

PWC: Cadillac tests new GT3-spec racecar

GM Racing has kept the information surrounding the replacement for its current Cadillac CTSV-R racecar rather quiet, but RACER has learned the brand's next-generation Pirelli World Challenge car turned it first laps in testing this week at the Gingerman road course in Michigan.

Created by longtime GM Racing partner Pratt & Miller Engineering, the new-for-2015 Cadillac Racing chassis is expected to be unveiled as a 2-door ATS coupe, replacing the 2-door CTS-V coupe platform which won back-to-back PWC GT titles in 2012 and 2013 with driver Johnny O'Connell.

Reached for comment by RACER on Tuesday, a Cadillac Racing representative declined to speak on the topic.

It's sounding like Kobayashi has been demoted to test driver status. I know his driving has been coming into question the last couple seasons. Maybe this will be good for him, maybe now he will start to fight for the seat.

As for the Max Verstappen Toro Rosso appointment for next season, many of the drivers in the paddock are saying it's "a risk" for a 16 year old. Yes he's young but Toro Rosso and Red Bull see something in him and want to get him involved into F1 now. Yes his talent will be raw but being young will help him groom that talent into experience.
