vmd9
As soon as the NBA does it and proves it adds to revenue, NHL will do it too. Hockey Related Revenue I just don't see how it adds revenue. The amount of money paid to teams by sponsors will be offset by the huge drop in jersey sales.
JayMac
I think each of the major 4 North American sports will have some form of ads somewhere on the uniforms by 2020.6 years? No they would be lucky the have hockey and the nba add them at the most. You honestly think that Goodell and the newly chosen MLB commissioner won't hop on the bandwagon too? The NFL already has them on practice jerseys.

You really dont know how the market will react until it's done, it could be a big flop, or people will buy them anyways and there wont be that much of a difference. Maximus89
Is it possible that after Adidas contract is over, the NBA will allow teams to find their own Brand to use to make their uniforms and have their logo on the front? For example, the Hornets would be designed by and have the Jordan logo on the front. Rockets with Peak or some other Asian brand. Big markets with Nike and Adidas. Smaller with Under Armour. CS85
The fact is that we've been spoiled as hell for all these years without uniform ads. Plainly the sports world around us is gravitating farther and farther from uniforms as art, seeing them instead as unrealized profit. The only thing that would make this transition easier for me is if the sponsors logos adopt the team colors and the logo is not predominant. The days will eventually come when the entire left or right strap or even side panel on NBA uniforms will be the allotted ad space and it will be NASCARian in it's pornography. Considered the premium that is paid to be the "Exclusive" supplier, I doubt that would happen. Also, there is revenue distribution to consider. With the way the labor agreement is structured, it would get really messy if teams handled the contracts themselves and each received a different amount. GriffinM6
At least they didn't try to be like the nfl & nhl and move it to the neckline lol.so instead put it on the back like the mlb where it will never be seen. I like the nfl and NHL's way of doing it because it makes the NFL/NHL brand front and center while the manufacturers logos get placed elsewhere not as visible. The MLB one looks good though, because there's not a large gap between the collar and the MLB logo. The space on Jefferson's jersey however, is huge. why can't the nba be like the mlb, the mlb has it's logo in team specific colors, why can't the nbaI would really like this. The designs of the two league's logos are similar, so it could easily work.

Heck, I'd settle for a keyline around the logo at the very least. The NBA mark gets muddled on dark jerseys; especially when they're Red or Blue. Soarindude
The reason why the NBA is pushing sleeves is so they have a place to put advertisements without completely affecting the actual jersey.\conspiracy
Phils Phan
Nothing's sacred anymore. I remember Silver saying something about keeping a healthy balance, meaning minimal jersey ads. Well we already have stadiums named after ads, billboards next to the playing area, ads holding up the nets in basketball, ads on the surface in the NHL and now in some NBA courts. The healthy balance is that the uniform remains unaltered, it's the one uncommercialised thing that chooses identity over obnoxious advertising. Once ads so there sports just becomes a bunch of moving billboards playing on billboards surrounded buy actually billboards. Pathetic. Phillies, Bears, and new NYFC fan. ror1997
I don't get it. Nobody's gonna look at a uniform, see a Pepsi logo and say, "Hot mama, I need a coke right now". And that's not just because nobody says "Hot Mama" anymore. Yankees, Nets and Saintshttp://gif.mocksession.com/2011/03/netsfan/

(probably)notabandwagonfan
I don't understand why some people defend the Big 4's possibility of using ad's. "Well soccer, the WNBA, and international teams have ad's." Yes, but their revenue is far less than those of the Big 4. If I'm not mistaken, the NBA is second in revenue to the NFL, so I find it unacceptable to use ad's on uniforms in games. I do think ad's on practice jerseys is fine, but I believe that players becoming at athletics billboards is ridiculous, especially in a league such as the NBA. Just my opinion, but I can't stand the thought of pulling for the Denver Pepsi's in basketball, or the Atlanta Coca Colas in baseball.

NFL revenue is around $10B; MLB is around $8B, NBA is $5B, and NHL is $4B. (These are estimates based on numbers published in 2011, plus recent additional revenue streams).Google's revenue in all of 2013 was $55B...just to give you some perspective. And that's not just because nobody says "Hot Mama" anymore.Sponsorship of a major sports team can bring brand recognition to relatively unknown brands, or brands in industries that don't otherwise advertise a lot. Some of it is about just perception. For example, few people in the Northeast had heard of Wachovia bank (unless they were following the whole First Union story.) Wachovia has its name on Phila's arena, and at least subconsiously, people just assume that it's a big time reputable institution.Another example: Excel Energy is known by a lot of people who otherwise may not have heard of it. Now that may not matter because it's not like you can go to the store and buy Excel Energy, but all of a sudden it's more well known to the casual investor who may be looking for energy stocks. Also, it's not just about thinking you're going to sell more Big Macs. McDonalds isn't putting their ads everywhere because they think they're going to sell more prodct, they're just trying to block their competitors from putting their logo in the same space. It's a chess game more than anything. It's also about ingraciating (sp?) yourself to your local community. Target is based in MN, and (I would assume, I'm not sure) is something that Minnesotans are proud of. It certainly helps with PR when their name is on the Twins stadium because it makes it appear like they're more a part of the local community, even if they really don't care.
