Seriously, what the effing hockey sticks does an athlete's sexual orientation have to do with how they perform on the play stage? Oh what could have been.... We weren't worrying about whether or not it would hurt his chances of returning to soccer or his USMNT chances.Unfortunately, football culture isn't the same way. He also caused the fumble in the Cotton Bowl that was returned for a TD that pretty much sealed the win. Don't care if he likes dudes, he's a Mizzou legend as far as I'm concerned. If it's not me bringing it up, then some jackass on Twitter or in the media would probably do it. This can of worms will eventually be opened.Like I said when Jason Collins came out, football is the hardest sport to come out of, because of the sheer volume, culture and tradition of football customs in several parts of America.It's one thing to come out as a basketball player, where the sport is primary in a few regions. But it's another to do it in a sport followed so religiously in many American regions (Southeastern U.S., Texas).I applaud Sam for doing this, but he had to have thought of all the repercussions coming his way. Right now there are young boys and girls living in the closet scared and confused about their sexual orientation. Terrified to come out to their family. Micheal Sam and others like him, famous or not famous can give them courage and confidence to come out themselves. This announcement is saving lives. He easily could've waited a few months and come out after he was drafted.And to all the people that say "Who cares?" or "It shouldn't matter", it does. If it didn't matter, then there would already be openly gay players in the NFL and Kerry Rhodes would probably be on a roster right now. This is a great step towards it not mattering and it will help if Sam goes on to be a star in the NFL, but we're not quite at the point where it doesn't matter yet. Braden Posted February 10, 2014 Share Posted February 10, 2014 Stuff like this REALLY matters.After seeing what appears on the surface to be a black-balling of heavily rumoured-to-be-gay athlete Kerry Rhodes, and to a smaller extent out NBA old-man Jason Collins and LGBT Ally punter Chris Kluwe from pro sports, it seems that Sam has an uphill battle to climb.From what I've seen, pro-sports teams seem far more scared of the supposed "media circus" that surrounds having a gay (or LGBT Ally) player. They see it as "baggage". Teams that can have a similar player without that "baggage" so far have taken the other guy every time. It's very similar to why Tim Tebow can't find a job in the NFL (Kerry Rhodes is a far better safety than Tim Tebow is a QB, but he still has a playoff win). But this is different. This dude is the Defensive Player of the Year in the best conference in College Football. Michael Sam has far more upside to any of the "baggage" that this would supposedly have. Him coming out is not a shock to anyone that he knows... this is a young man that has already embraced his orientation, and ready to take on the NFL.If this man, a projected 3-5 rounder isn't drafted, I'm giving up on sports. And these are pretty much mantras of the uncomfortable.He's not grandstanding and there's no "gay mafia".While our culture has really come a long way in the last decade or two, it's still a HUGE deal...not only to society but more importantly to the person who has to decide whether to come out. Hiding it cannot be fun. Coming out is scary. People invalidating the importance usually do so because they'd prefer not to think about (i.e., there's just enough insecurity inside them). At least that's how it's always seemed to me.And the difficulty of "living a lie" vs. "everyone's reaction" is why I don't usually worry too much about the timing. This is something this guy had to do for himself.That said, the timing will be interesting regarding the draft. The NFL is the one North American team sports league I am most distrustful of regarding something like this. They won't want the distractions or any talk about anything not between the lines. Sometimes I even think it's what keeps Tebow out of the league.Make no mistake. What he's doing is courageous and I don't think most of us can relate to it.Maybe someday it won't matter. But right now it does. And to pretend it does not is just ignorant. EDIT: I did not see Braden's Tebow comparison before I posted...Funny we were both thinking this..."distractions" are funny in the NFL.
