New Zealand Considers Changes to National Flag

What's the point of even having a national flag if it's just going to look like someone else's. Although I think Australia should change theirs as well.

Love this design.

Reminds me of Canada's flag change. Simple, bold, elegant.

The countercharging of the fern makes it too busy. A simple white fern on black would look much better.

Will people do a haka during the national anthem? :D

BTW, just to highlight the importance of context, I brought an All Blacks ballcap back from my NZ visit but only wore it a few times around Atlanta. Apparently a lot of people around here aren't familiar with the All Blacks and assumed it had some kind of racial meaning. That's all I have to say about that. <_<

As for the flag, I like some of the concepts.

Yeah... I would definitely consider getting a black hat with the white fern, but definitely not with the "ALL BLACKS".

Imagine if you wore the soccer team's stuff to go with the cap: the ALL WHITES.

I saw, I came, I left.

NZ's national sports teams

Rugby: All Blacks

Soccer: All Whites

Basketball: Tall Blacks

Seriously.

While we're at it... the cricket team is the Black Caps and the netball team is the Silver Ferns.

The issue shows up in NZ and Australia like clockwork. Problem is that the change falls squarely into the 'nice to have' category rather than having a compelling argument why it needs to happen right now.

That's a bit of a "shocka" (as they pronounce "shocker" down there). I saw all kinds of All Blacks gear on my visit but I don't recall even one instance of seeing All Whites merchandise or even hearing any mention of that team. Had no idea that was what they called the soccer team until I saw your post.

Only semi-related but pretty cool:

Don't mind, Mike. He's just a dirty tea-sipping Loyalist. :P

Hey now! I hate tea :P

Very.

Thanks for that insight.

You're welcome. Almost as informative as "I like the old one better".

I said I liked the red ensign. I acknowledged it was an unpopular opinion. What more is needed, exactly?

Let's discard the standard explanation right off the bat. I'm not an old-timer who remembers the red ensign. I'm 26 years old. The current Canadian flag is the only national flag of my country that I've known.

I like the design of the current Canadian flag. It's distinctive, it's simple, it's sharp. It's a wonderful design (hats off to George Stanley). If we were talking about a logo of some kind then I would applaud the design. The issue I take with it is that a flag and a logo are two very different things. Some might see a flag as a logo for a country, but I see it as more. It should be a graphical representation of that country's...essence, for lack of a better term. Simple and distinctive may not necessarily convey that, and I don't believe they do in the case of the current Canadian flag.

The single leaf runs counter to Canada's heraldic representation of three leaves on a single stem against a white background. As it is it's just...lacking somehow. Like a single maple leaf just isn't sufficient. The red bars on each end also appear random. Again, from a design perspective they make sense. The leaf is red, so why not stick to the simple, bold one colour plus white scheme? On a national flag, though? What do they represent? They seem like random design elements. In that regard I actually prefer Lester Pearson's preference for the national flag. The three leaves are a better representation of Canada's heraldic emblem and the blue bars could have multiple meanings (the motto "From Sea to Sea," reflective of the blue in the Union Jack for English Canadians or the old French colonial flags for French Canadians).

So compared to the red ensign? Well the red ensign is less distinct from a design perspective, but to me it actually says more. The coat of arms shows the emblems of England, Scotland, Ireland, and France, the four nations that Canada's founding people came from. The three maple leaves on a single stem below those represent those people unified in the nation of Canada. The Union Jack references Canada's past as a political entity born from Loyalists fleeing north during the American Revolution, as well as our continued recognition of the Queen as the head of state and our use of the Westminster Parliamentary system.

So yeah, hope that suffices. As you said...

God forbid someone disagree with a common sentiment on a forum. Its not like we're here to discuss anything. Just nod our heads in agreement...

So with that in mind I take it we can just agree to disagree ;)
