In the ECHL, the Indy Fuel are beginning play in 2014-15.

In the CHL, several teams still might be leaving to join the ECHL...that and the SPHL's Peoria Rivermen has been rumored to join.

Same old story, same old song & dance... This rumor goes on every year.

Late Thursday night, Fox Sports Arizona reported that multiple NHL sources with knowledge of the situation said several western-based NHL franchises, including the Phoenix Coyotes want to form a Pacific Division for their affiliates in the American Hockey League (AHL).

Reading that article, I'm surprised that an Arizona AAA team anywhere besides Tuscon would be considered. Prescott (Valley) may or may not be such a bad spot, but they're better off staying at the AA level, though the Sundogs should switch to the ECHL before the CHL goes under or the instant it happens (given the contract).

Flagstaff? I love the idea considering that it's not too far away from where I'm at, but they'd be best served by NAU hockey or the junior-level WSHL. Maybe an ECHL team...in about 10 years (provided it's still around).

Of course, I'm forgetting the very best place to house an AHL team in Arizona...Glendale. (Provided that the Jobberdome isn't a parking lot by 2017). :P

THE POINT OF KEEPING ALL THE TEAMS OUT EAST IS THAT ALL THE GAMES ARE DOWN THE ROAD FROM ONE ANOTHER. There's more time to practice, there's less money to spend on travel. Developmental affiliates are for developing. They're not holding pens for 14th forwards. Just because Boston keeps its prospects in Providence doesn't mean San Jose is entitled to keep theirs in Sacramento, not when there aren't numerous other AHL teams in equivalent proximity to Sacramento. Sending players cross-country every now and then is still more cost-effective than sending an entire AAA hockey team across the lower-density western half of the United States. Every time this comes up, it's mostly just the Sharks being bitches. Maybe they can just keep their prospects in The World's Greatest Adult Rec League :jerkoff motion:

Speaking of the grand folly of putting AHL teams out west, it's sounding like the Abbotsford Heat might wind up in Glens Falls, which wants to stay on the circuit after the Phantoms leave for Allentown.

My friend who works for the Brampton Guardian has told me that the owners of the Beast are trying to get into the ECHL as well.

This is actually nothing new, If I recall correctly that was the goal from the start but I have to tell you, I don't see it happening. I've been to a couple Beast games. I've also seen a number of their player leave for more money in Europe during the course of the season. The CHL doesn't make sense to me outside of being a temporary stop for graduated college players still hoping to get a shot at the AHL.

The few people who actually want to keep the CHL in operation are apparently stubborn to the point of propping up shell teams, fake-IHL-style. St. Charles was one this year; Casper and Louisville could be replacement clubs for those seeking greener pastures next season.

The City of Abbotsford just bought out the Heat. They will move (likely to Adirondack) after the playoffs

Story B: Red Wings go undefeated and score 100 goals in every game. They also beat a team comprised of Godzilla, the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, 2 Power Rangers and Betty White. Oh, and they played in the middle of Iraq on a military base. In the sand. With no ice. Santa gave them special sand-skates that allowed them to play in shorts and t-shirts in 115 degree weather. Take it for what it's worth....

http://mayorsmanor.com/2014/04/major-news-kings-preparing-to-move-top-prospects-to-socal/

Through multiple league sources connected to the teams involved, we’ve confirmed that five to six NHL teams are prepared to move their top minor league prospects to a new AHL division based in Western U.S. markets.

The reason for this is actually quite simple; it just isn’t practical – or at least not ideal- to have the heart of an NHL franchise operating in one time zone, while their top development team is several time zones away.

At one point, as many as eight teams were involved in the discussions, including Anaheim, Los Angeles, Calgary, Colorado, Edmonton, Phoenix, San Jose, and Vancouver.

Regular conference calls and meetings have been taking place regarding this idea for a few years now and after vetting several different proposals – including the possibility of those teams starting their own league – it is now believed the AHL is on board with the idea.

From what we’ve learned recently, the new division will begin play in October 2015, as part of the AHL’s 2015-16 season.

The Coyotes, Ducks, Kings, and Sharks, are on board. As for the other one or two teams still in the mix, it is believed one of the Western Canadian teams’ interest in the project may have cooled.

Bloomington of the SPHL dropping down to Junior USHL.

Ummmm....an ECHL expansion franchise had better be coming down the pike for Peoria. Like, now.

CHL might actually be another step down the ladder for Peoria at this point. Hope they get an ECHL franchise. They'd slot in nicely with the Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan teams.

Can't find source, but I thought I read the ECHL wouldn't take Peoria right away when AHL Rivermen moved but only for 15-16. So they might have a chance at the E. If E doesn't call yet, I'd stay in the SPHL if I were them and avoid the CHL like a ten foot pole.

As I said before, does nobody care about the fans of these Northeast teams which might be moving west? They come in droves, and they would riot if such politics were the reason they lost these teams...

No one's going to lament Springfield, Albany, Binghamton, or several others. First off, they're not moving west. Secondly, as long as you're a Northeastern market big enough to have network TV affiliates in town and can be bothered to minimally keep your rink up, you'll get another team. Ask Worcester, Glens Falls, Binghamton, Albany...

Also, they don't "come in droves" unless you're talking about Hershey or Providence.

I was more thinking of Portland, Manchester, Worcester, Utica, Lake Erie, Norfolk...those kinds of teams. The fanbase will mount HUGE "Save the (team)" rallies which'll draw more than the team would draw out west.

Give me proof of one of these happening ever, and we'll talk. Jeez, the Aeros got jobbed out of existence last year after almost 20 well-supported seasons, and while fans were sad and angry, they weren't marching in outrage.
