Third Place Game

I've been following Liiga (Finnish Hockey) this season and I discovered that the losers of the semifinal games play each other in a third place game, sort of like a bronze medal game in the Olympics. I know the NCAA used to do this in basketball, but are there any other leagues out there that do this?

Eh, it would actually be kinda cool to bring it back in the Final Four. Have it played that Sunday on one of the Turner stations before the Women's Final Four. It won't be as well played with nothing on the line, but it would still present a good matchup either way.

As for current 3rd place games, there's the FIFA World Cup

About the only professional league that could have a third-place game would be the NFL, since it's a one-and-done postseason format. Maybe MLS, too, since they have a singular championship game.

Don't quite see the NBA, NHL, or MLB ever having a third-place game or series.

The NFL used to do it, the players and coaches hated it (Lombardi called it the " :censored: Bowl"). Besides, the current postseason format is geared to build to the Super Bowl. Won't happen.

When you factor in 1) the push for player safety, and 2) the multi-millions of dollars that are at risk if a star gets hurt, there's absolutely no way the league or PA would ever go for another meaningless extra game. I'm surprised the pro-bowl hasn't been terminated yet - not just because nobody watches it. The '60s were a different time... in a lot of ways.

This would have been Florida/Wisconsin. And as a Wisconsin fan/graduate, I can tell you I would not have watched it.

The WCHA used to have a 3rd place game in its conference tournament...I've been to one. And while winning the 3rd place game is hardly exciting, at least the game counted for rankings purposes...that made it slightly more exciting than having one in the NCAA tourney would be.

In this day and age, I just can't imagine North American big leagues having one...as discussed above, three of them play series and one has safety concerns. But the bottom line is that I just don't think North Americans would have very much interest.

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

Even the NFL realizes that the Pro Bowl's time has come and gone. It draws ratings for some reason, though, so they more or less have to keep it around.
