Sport
I took the Golden State University Warriors to three straight national championships on NCAA Football 2005. It sounds like a college. It actually sounds like a crappy community college. "Where'd you go to school?" "I went to Golden State for two years and then transferred to UC Santa Cruz, but my idiot adviser at GSU said my credits would transfer and they didn't so not only did I waste two years at GSU, but I also had to go an extra year at Santa Cruz. I would never recommend Golden State to anyone" You get the idea. San Francisco Warriors sounds better and it sounds like a professional team. The_Admiral
The problem with doing a plebiscite on this is that the most diehard Warriors fans are first-order Oakland partisans such that you might as well suggest calling their football team the San Francisco Raiders for all the success you'll get on this. ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫
DG_ThenNowForever
My first memory of the Golden State Warriors was the Hanging With Mr. Cooper episode where they went to a Warriors game. I thought it was dumb then, I though it was dumb when they became the Golden State Lightning Bolts for a few seasons, and I think it's dumb now.For all of the excitement around Steph Curry and the general direction of the franchise, they have a truly terrible identity. 1 hour ago, ShutUpLutz! said: and the drunken doodoobags jumping off the tops of SUV's/vans/RV's onto tables because, oh yeah, they are drunken drug abusing doodoobags

I, for one, LOVE their identity. Sure, the Golden state moniker is a bit clunky, but it's been that way for such a long time now that it sounds normal to me. Plus, weird location names like "The City" have always been the Warriors thing. I also love how their logo represents a major Bay Area landmark. WAY better than that odd robot Indian they used to use. It's different, and unlike a lot of people, I don't really think that's a bad thing. bosrs1
I think owner Franlin Mielui's original intent was for the team to play games all over California not just Oakland. In 1971 they played all of their games in Oakland except for 6 in San Diego. After that it's been all Oakland ever since except for the 1996-97 season in San Jose as the Oakland Coliseum Arena was being rebuilt.Correct. It had nothing to do with unifying the Bay Area. It was a marketing gimmick that just never took off for a team that was supposed to have become a traveling team and never did.

You have the Warriors represented by a bridge, the Lakers, Pistons, Knicks, Pacers and Clippers represented by a random basketball with the team colors and the Mavericks who represent themselves with a horse. At least the other pro leagues develop more sense into graphically-showing the team names. You can also add the Thunder to this list as well. On 11/19/2012 at 7:23 PM, oldschoolvikings said: She’s still half convinced “Chris Creamer” is a porn site.) Xist2inspire
I'd market the "Golden State" moniker as a way to honor the gold mining history in that area, something that Los Angeles isn't really known for as much as San Fransisco. There are ways "Golden State" can still work in this day and age. Tradition is the foundation of innovation, and not the enemy.

It's silly to have competing nicknames, or at least competing imagery in a name. The "location" reflects gold mining, while the nickname reflects... well, in 2014 I'm not sure what "warriors" reflects (bridges, apparently.) Muggens
They're still going to be in the Bay Area folk. But to some people moving from Oakland to San Francisco is like moving from New York to Moscow.
FiddySicks
I'd reverse the cities in that last sentence. San Francisco is very similar to New York, much like Oakland is very similar to post Soviet Russia.
