Here's Bakersfield's gym, and I mean gym. Seats under 500, but all <500 are treated like kings. This could indeed be an interesting approach for the Bulls and their new practice center in, um, Unitedcenterville? Reinsdorfville? whatever we're calling Madison Street from 1600W to 2000W now that it's supposed to be a destination of sorts. Make a night of shopping, restaurants, and then hang out at an NBDL Baby Bulls game being waited on hand and foot, schmoozing and not really watching basketball. I particularly like it because maybe it'll siphon off the element of schmoozing and not really watching basketball from actual Bulls games.

This is what I picture the Bulls doing as each NBA team is "forced" to get monogamous. Not what I prefer, but what I expect. Something low cost.

For some reason I thought the Warriors did something similar, like put their team in a facility that doubled as a Y or office building. I remember seeing the mockups here. (EDIT: It doesn't look like a particularly "permanente" structure: http://www.cityofsantacruz.com/index.aspx?page=1917)

Your mention of DePaul reminds me that Rosemont will be available, but I think the closer they get, the smaller capacity will be. Or like you said, all suites!

Bismarck and Minot ND both have a history of supporting minor league basketball. If the Timberwolves want their own team it would make sense to look at one of those two towns.

Hey! I didn't suggest Winnipeg! Go me!

A Bucks D-League team in Green Bay would never work. Whatever appetite for basketball there is in Green Bay is more than fulfilled by UWGB, and the Green Bay Gamblers (USHL) are the town's big non-Packers winter event.

The Bucks' problem is that there's really no good place for a minor league basketball team in Wisconsin. The Fox Valley would be ideal, but none of those towns have an arena capable of hosting the D-League (unless they were somehow able to use the Performing Arts Center and the Bakersfield model). La Crosse has a history of supporting minor league basketball, but they tend to be more loyal to the Minnesota teams (except for the Packers). Maybe Racine-Kenosha would work, but they have the same no arena problem as the Fox Valley.

IIRC, I believe Erie is now an affiliate with Orlando (maybe a setup for a possible move to Jacksonville?). Also, as DaytonBlue said, Utah will most likely replace Portland as Idaho's affiliate. As for the rest of the D-League...

EASTERN CONFERENCE

  • Atlanta Hawks - Gwinnett County, GA What is everybody waiting for? This would be IDEAL.
  • Brooklyn Nets - Bridgeport, CT / Long Island, NY Should the Nassau get renovated, it would be a suitable home for them (given how it was the home of the New York Nets, they could use the old concept for a "Long Island Nets" team-kinda like how the Westchester Knicks identity works)
  • Charlotte Hornets (formerly Bobcats) - Charleston, SC There is a LOT of speculation as to where such a team could go...personally, I think Myrtle Beach would be a good place for the team.
  • Chicago Bulls - Moline, IL (Quad Cities) / Rockford, IL And the speculation continues...Rockford has history and is close, but QC would be a nice, close rival for the Iowa Energy.
  • Milwaukee Bucks - Green Bay WI With Green Bay Phoenix college hoops on the rise, not sure a D-League team could draw a whole lot of support there. Maybe the Wisconsin Dells Center dome could work...give tourists a destination for the winter.
  • Toronto Raptors - Hamilton, ON Basically, any Raptors D-League team in Canada would have to thrive in an area where the NBL Canada reigns. Personally, if the BayHawks franchise moves to Jacksonville, a new team in Erie would have to be the Raptors' affiliate.
  • Washington Wizards - Baltimore, MD / Hershey, PA No go for Balto...maybe somewhere in Virginia would work?

WESTERN CONFERENCE

  • Denver Nuggets - Colorado Springs, CO / Broomfield, CO / Loveland, CO / Pueblo, CO So many possibilities...but I think Loveland is the best of 'em. (The Eagles and Ice do well there)
  • Los Angeles Clippers - San Diego, CA / San Bernardino-Ontario, CA (Inland Empire) / Long Beach, CA Having their place in San Diego would be a nice nostalgic touch, but I think Ontario is the most feasible choice of them (surprised the D-Fenders don't play there)
  • Minnesota Timberwolves - Fargo, ND / Bismarck, ND YES! Bring back the Dakota Wizards-or if the Skyforce move to South Florida, keep Sioux Falls in the league
  • New Orleans Pelicans - Shreveport-Bossier City, LA Either there or Biloxi would work...a nice Gulf Coast surrounding would fit the team
  • Portland Trail Blazers - Eugene, OR No go. Ducks basketball rules there. I'd suggest trying the arena in Medford, Oregon.

My comments in bold

Don't the Los Angeles D-Fenders play in a practice gym with no seating? Bulls could do that.

Speaking of DePaul, they should have a small, intimate gym that functions as a lounge to hang out and watch basketball more than as an actual arena. And it should be in Lincoln Park. Oh well, Rahm is our great shirtless leader. I saw it on CNN.

Did you see that Chicagoland miniseries? There was a clip where they showed how brave Rahm is by digging up some footage of him protesting the Nazis in Skokie. He was shirtless. The narrator made mention of it. Stuff like that reminds you that all we really are is just a bunch of dumb Polack peasants looking for a strong leader to take care of us. Maybe Putin will annex Cook County next.

They do - the Meyer Center, where the women play. If the men would just accept their Horizon League destiny, they could play there, too.

We live about 7 blocks from where the arena/hotel/precursor to inevitable casino are going up. I know of exactly zero people who find this to be a sane idea. I mean, not just the arena, but we're building a hotel for Mariott entirely with taxpayer money! This is up there with the parking meter deal and the Washington "L" superstation for the express line that didn't have anyplace to lay track.

Rahm is a shortsighted, elitist bully with no ability to manage at the municipal level. In other words, he's exactly who we thought we were getting. He'll win at least three more terms, probably more, because he's sucked so badly as mayor that his dreams of higher office are all shot.

Oh, he's Rahmney!

Express trains from O'Hare to the city are a good idea. I just don't understand why they can't use the North Central for that. Makes more sense than L service; people who want to get from the airport to downtown probably want to do it in something approaching comfort.

Also he'll help saddle Illinois with a financier who makes Bain Capital look like a model citizen for governor.

  • 5 weeks later...

I thought there was a D-League logo thread, but I didn't see it. Grand Rapids announced that their team name is the drive and their logo is basically the Pistons' in white:

That's terrible. Absolutely terrible.

I'd love to have a D-League team in Baton Rouge, but LSU is king over here. I'm not sure it'd be profitable. Mississippi would probably be a better choice.

Tradition is the foundation of innovation, and not the enemy.
