NFL Changes 2014+

Blarg. Enough Orwellian revisions. I like the Oilers' identity but I'd prefer it stayed alive in Tennessee.

The Houston Texans have a solid identity as it is anyway. Would be a shame to kill that so they can pretend they're the original Oilers.

As opposed to staking claim to an NFL nickname that was used previously be a team located in Dallas? Ummm...ok.

This whole thread is based on OP thinking these uniforms look very similar:

jacks.jpgNew-TB-Buccaneers-Uniforms-2014.jpg

What's a joke is how blind the anti-Nike NFL crowd is

Both feature a stylistically similar angular block font and (what's not visible in these photos) identical triangle inserts on the pants stripes, although reversed. No, the uniforms aren't identical. But as the two most recent NFL redesigns by Nike, they're far too alike to be passed off as "unique" designs for each team.

As people have said, some of the blame has to be put on the teams. Nike is capable of good, clean, modern designs as shown with Minnesota. But when they get ahold of a team that allows more wiggle room, it's more likely to see crap like this on the field.

It bothers you that there is the same shape of a stripe on both pants? So should only one team be allowed to have a thin rectangle stripe down the side of their pants? Check out their preseason matchup a couple days ago:

temp140808_MM_Bucs_Jags_WEB_0116--nfl_me

The triangle/rectangle hybrid shape is the same on both, yes, but they're in reverse directions, and the Bucs only have the insert on the top while the Jags have it on the top and bottom. I don't see how this is different from some teams having single thin rectangles down the length of their pants, some teams having thin rectangles with single lines on each side, etc. It's just a modern interpretation of that theme and variation.

Now let's put the fonts side-by-side (or top-and-bottom):

That's too similar for you? Damn, I wonder what you think of teams with standard block fonts.

I feel like my tone is pretty harsh, and I do think the Bucs look like garbage, particularly relative to their previous look, and I'm not a huge fan of the Jags look either, but I don't think they look anything similar except for that pants stripe, which I hope to have shown is varied enough. Yes, when you create a template you run the risk of having your teams look the same, but I think Nike is running the risk of that in college football, not the NFL (c.f. the triangular insert on each side of the upper chest of the new Nike NCAAF template that allegedly represents that jaws of Husky Stadium for UDub and a million other things for every other team that's getting them). I just want to make sure that the Nike-bashing isn't just reactionaries being against modern design. It's a lot easier to bash Adidas uniforms all looking the same, where you can point to three stripes on every jersey.

Because there are tons of oil derricks in Tennessee...

Well, son, I was hinting that they should still be in Houston playing as the Oilers...maybe they were before your time.
And Houston eventually got a new NFL team. The city should be extremely grateful.

They should be lucky that the legislators in charge of the "Los Angeles NFL franchise" in the late-1990s were able to f#ck up things so badly, to the point of Bob McNair winning a re-bid for the team which eventually became the Texans.

Can the Jaguars just bring back these uniforms already?

3548.gif3549.gif

By the time they wore this combination, the road uniform was already a mess. Solid black from the waist down? Ick.

The truth is, the Jags never looked better than in their first season... every change has been a step down, with the last two being a giant leap off a cliff.

I think the version before the one posted above, where the numbers were teal and I believe no black pants, were their best look and easily could've lasted for a long time.
Yeah the first version of Jacksonville's uniforms weren't great because of the side panel and the number font, which were both ditched in time for the following season.

The black side panels were only used during the preseason of the 95 season I believe.

The black side panel jerseys were the first. Erosion of these uniforms, but were not their inaugural set. They used one with similar pant and sleeve cuff striping but had varsity block numbers. Either 1998, 1999 or so, saw these updated ones with the black side panel which lasted one entire season and then was removed prior to the next season.

Dear Nike,

Die in a house fire.

Those Jags unis weren't great either
Those JAGS unis are by far worse in every way (except for the helmet) than what they currently wear.

It takes a huge set of nuts on these boards to openly express satisfaction for the current Jacksonville set.

I'll agree with virtually everyone else on here; if, compared to the late-1990s set, the Jaguars took a 90° hard-left turn with the set of the late-2000s, then they took a 900° turn with the current set.

I think that road look is actually my single favorite set from the Jags' history. I'd much rather them be the black and white and gold trim team of the NFL than a teal and black team with white and gold trim.

I don't like how low Fred Taylor wore his socks with these, but with half or 3/4 to the knees socks, they have the right balance:

Look how horrible the side piping is. There are 3 players in this picture, all 3 have different piping styles. I agree 100% with the original or the variations of the original uniforms being better than what they currently wear. The set they wore from 09-12 was so horrible that I'll take a half black half gold helmet for 5 years just so I don't have to look at that horrible mess of a uniform anymore. This new set also brought a huge upgrade to the logo and word mark over the previous versions.

Ooh!!! Yay! I just noticed ANOTHER aspect of the Bucs new uniforms that is absolutely atrocious. Why in the hell do the red jerseys have white numbers on the body of the jersey, yet have red numbers on the pewter yoke? I don't care how shiny the outlines are, that makes the shoulder numbers damn near impossible to read from more than a few feet away.

God. Just burn this set already.

This is stemming from the Eagles changes noted on Friday (maybe this might be a topic from a separate thread?), but another Eagles point I've just noticed a couple years late... :suspect:

It seems that in 2012 (after the Nike switch), the Eagles '1' in the jersey number font was updated. Notice the top serif on the '1' got smaller. Any other tweaks like this for any other teams?

I actually liked the black pants that came before the one you see above.

Granted, these black pants should only be worn with the black tops.

The teal numbers on the white were great.

20131214-brunell.jpg

But I agree the black sides for that one full season was a mess

As much as I liked the the number font they used in those sets, there's something about the original one that is just so nice. The balance of colors was perfect.

How come the Ravens jerseys don't have the NFL Shield or the NFL Equipment logo on the collar?

BusD3caCYAET6Nx.jpg

those are practice jerseys.

Harbaugh brothers are known to practice with the gameday jerseys (or jerseys made of the gameday material).

Also, other team's practice jerseys have the Equipment logo on it. Odd this one has none. (Apparently it was the same last year)

Interesting story.

Back in 2011 when I was a writer covering the 49ers, I talked with 49ers radio man Ted Robinson. While covering the Eagles-49ers game that season, he mistook Jeremy Maclin and DeSean Jackson on the fumble play towards the end of the game. Robinson thought Maclin was Jackson, because the 8 and the 0 on the Eagles jerseys looked way too similar from a distance in the press box. If you listen to the original call of the game, you can hear Robinson say that Jackson fumbled even though it was actually Maclin. He told me he thought that player was wearing the #10.

You want Bucs/Jags similarity? Check this out. Both beautiful, BTW.

mark-brunell1.jpg

mike_alstott_2004_12_05.jpg

Both teams should go back to those respective looks in about week 2 of the regular season.

Is it just me that any picture I see of Mike Alstott is immediately followed up with Chris Berman's voice inside my head going "Boom! Boom! Boom!"?

i too would prefer the tennessee oilers still be the name, if i can't get them back home in texas... the only thing they need to do to perfect the "titans" imagine is use the pants stripe on the helmet, and throw the navy blue pants in the garbage. then they'd be perfect in every way. home/road and alt. wear the white pants exclusively with the columbia jersey, and use columbia pants about 90% of the time with the white jerseys, occasionally going white-out. no need to change logos, templates, fonts, or anything else. or add red.

Eagles 8s and 0s look a lot alike due to how they naturally bend with the pads. The little cross in the 8 gets lost.

Simar to how Dallas' 8s and 9s look alike due to the bend causing the "tip" on the bottom of the 9 to at times touch the middle part.

The similar pants stripes are technically no different from say, a Packers/Bears matchup, no. But traditional pants stripes have been around for decades and will be around in the future. These won't, which makes them a fad. I guess it just comes down to personal preference. I don't want to see every team in the league wear the same basic 3-stripe design, but I'd prefer that over every team wearing "modern" pants stripes like this. The uniforms aren't similar because each design element is similar (they're not), they're similar because they're both full of fads. Do we expect either of these teams to sport these looks for more than 5-6 years tops? Probably not. They are both cut from the same cloth of lazy Nike designs, like both teams picked uniforms A and B from a catalog. That's the feel that I get. Not identical, but similar.

Same goes for the fonts. Side by side, they are very different, but at the core they're very much the same. Blocky, with enough quirky angles to be considered modern. I think the Jags font is vastly superior to the Bucs, but that's not saying much.

I'm not bashing modern design. I love a good modern football uniform, but these... are not that.

I think we can all appreciate the conglomeration of god-awfulness in this portion of the photo posted above.
