Olympic movement dying?

A few thoughts...

- the 20th century was a breakout century for globalization... 21st century, we've seen & been to most places around the world, there really aren't a lot of potential hosts that have yet to make their mark. Beijing might've been the last of that era, for a while anyways until developing locales are ready.

- IOC has blown up the games to ridiculous proportions; citizens & local gov'ts simply don't want their cities gridlocked for 18 days, let alone the billions it costs for years of construction & upkeep.

- Winter Olympics are kindof a bitch to hold. Quebec City would hold them tomorrow if they could, only they'd need to have downhill skiing events in Vermont because IOC regulations on hill size.

So yeah... withholding a perfectly great city from hosting because god forbid the skiiers aren't competing in the same metro area.

I think we may see a day, for a while anyways, where the IOC attempts a dozen or so permanent hosts around the world. Let's face it, infrastructure & venues aren't crumbling nearly as quickly as they used to. No need to keep forcing trillion dollar deficits on countries for these Coke commerical games.

Beijing, China has beaten out Almaty, Kazakhstan to serve as the host for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games. It becomes the first city to host both a summer and winter edition of the Olympic Games.

The 2022 Olympic Winter Games will be the third consecutive Olympics staged in Asia, following the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea and the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo, Japan. The last continent to host three consecutive Olympic Games was Europe: the 1992 Olympic Winter Games in Albertville, France; the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain; and the 1994 Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer, Norway.

And why was the choice between Almalty and Beijing?

Because only Asian dictatorships want to pay to host the stupid things nowadays.

IOC's screwed if it ever runs out of those.

Yep. It has seemingly hit the Winter Olympics first, but eventually this is going to hit the Summer games as well. (And hell if FIFA doesn't start cleaning up its act eventually their vaunted World Cup will start to suffer as well).

As far as I'm concerned, Pyeongchang will be the Winter Olympics' last hurrah. Perhaps it's just as well that the NHL no longer wants to let its players compete (though it's too bad they're putting forth such a lame substitute).

Even with permanent Olympic sites, the host nations would have to spend significant amounts of money in between Games maintaining the sites, not to mention upgrading them to keep up with (1) technological advances in any number of areas that would impact the Games, and (2) ever-changing security threats. The latter alone has been responsible for a huge chunk of ballooning Olympic budgets in recent years.

Instead of asking one nation after another to take on a multi-billion-dollar boondoggle for one time only as the IOC does now, adopting a permanent site would, in essence, be asking a single nation to take on said multi-billion-dollar boondoggle followed by a never-ending string of lesser, but still likely multi-billion-dollar boondoggles every four years - or at least that's how it's likely to be perceived and portrayed by the inevitable opposition within any prospective host nation. Imagine the Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes fiasco on the scale of an entire nation, and you start to get the picture.

All that considered, I can't imagine very many cities or nations that aren't already willing to be a one-time Olympic host would be willing to host the Games on a permanent basis, so we could well end up being stuck with someplace like China or Russia as the permanent host, which would defeat one of the major purposes of having a permanent host in the first place.

It's really hard to say. They say that we live in a global and connected world. But when you see how much that globalization has failed in just about every way possible. We can connect to someone half way around the world, but somehow we are not as connected with the people around us in our own neighborhoods.

Olympics in recent years: Athens, Shanghai, Sochi, and Rio De Janeiro. Something is definitely wrong with the Olympic committee.

Those are mostly fine with me.

Shanghai never hosted. Beijing.

Yes because finacial disaters, legal prosatution, abject proverty, huge smog clodes, ruthless dictators, and the future USSR is such a good thing. Shanghai, Beijing, whatever.

One would think high schools in the Chicago suburbs would have newer textbooks than that.
