Saturday night was up there with 2005 and 2012 in terms of the most painful. I would've preferred a blowout.

I may not be back with the NFL next season after that debacle.

My best friend is a Bengals fan. I really wanted that for him. That was "wow, this is really happening" awful.

That was the most brutal loss I've ever watched - and this is coming from someone who experienced "The Drive" and "The Fumble" in back to back seasons. Cant say I'd blame you if you walked away after that game.

January 10th, 2009.

The 2008 Titans had started the season 10-0 and finished 13-3 and AFC South champions. I finally saw my first Titans game in person that year. If I remember right, Sports Illustrated or some magazine like that declared in their playoff preview edition, "The Titans will Take Tampa", being 11 years old I ate up every little bit of the hype. Tennessee was the #1 seed, facing the Ravens in Nashville.

The Titans fumbled three times, all deep in Ravens territory or flat out in the Red zone, including at the BAL 25 in the 2nd on fourth down instead of going for the guaranteed 3 points from Rob Bironas. In the 4th quarter, down 10-7, they made it to the Ravens 10 but had to settle for a tying FG.

The on Baltimore's possession, on a 3rd and 2 the officials missed the fact that the play clock had expired and threw no flag, and they managed to convert with a long gain on the drive that ultimately led BAL to the game winning FG. I don't blame the loss on that play now, the Titans deserved to lose and probably would have lost anyway penalty or no penalty, but at 11 years old, my home team's amazing run crushed in the first round when I was sure they were destined for the Super Bowl, I was furious and pinned all of my frustrations on that one single play. I was a sad, sad, gutted kid, and I learned the hard way not to ever have high expectations for the Titans from that day forward.

The Titans have never recovered, having not made it to the playoffs since.

--Not a Kings fan, but I remember feeling sick to my stomach for Sacramento after the 'loss' to the Lakers in the 02 WCF

--Although the Astros came back and won Game 6, the Pujols moonshot in Game 5 of the 2005 NLCS ripped my heart out for the time being

November 4, 2001. The day the Yankees dynasty met its demise in the desert. I was a 12 year old kid who had never really experienced anything by the Yankees winning. It was supposed to be a coronation - the greatest baseball dynasty since arguably the early 1960s against a team that didn't even exist 4 years earlier. The team representing a city reeling from unspeakable tragedy. The perfect valedictory for guys like Paul O'Neill, Scott Brosius, and Tino Martinez. And yet...

 

That Luis Gonzalez walk-off hit still rips my heart out to this day. I can't watch it without cringing. It was the first time that I, as a sports fan, really understood what it was like to lose. Painfully, shockingly, brutally lose. I had watched teams I loved lose before (the Jets in the 1998-99 AFC Championship spring to mind), but it was nothing like this. I remember sitting, mouth agape, for a solid 5 minutes afterward. Speechless, motionless, just staring at the television in disbelief. I suppose you could say my sports virginity was broken that day.

 

Game 7 of the 2004 ALCS is a close second, but that was a more drawn-out, elongated pain. Not the quick shock that a sudden 9th inning collapse would give. As a Yankee fan, those last 4 games of that ALCS was like slowly getting my eyeballs gouged out. But 2001 was a knife plunged through the heart. Still hurts to this day, but that's what being a fan is about, I suppose.

I'm sure this has been mentioned 297 times, but it's also the Bartman game for me. From 5 outs away to helpless and left for dead within a matter of minutes. I feel like an idiot for admitting this, but this stupid sports moment stung me more than any break-up I've ever had to endure.

After seeing someone point to the recent UNC National Championship loss, I went looking for my own post...

 

This was done before Wisconsin's loss a year ago.  In a literal sense, that day was the worst sports day of my life.  I hated every second of that day.  After upsetting undefeated Kentucky on Saturday, the elation carried into Sunday.  But on Monday, I woke up with the realization that my school could win the National Title tonight, an idea beyond preposterous for most of the past 50 years.  I went to work.  It was a long, miserable day, waiting for it.  Got home, walked the dog, worked out, then waited for it to start.  The whole day from waking up until tip was about 100 hours.  Then the nerve-wracking game.  And the loss.  That was a very long day.  And the worst "24-hour day" of my sports life.  However, in the spirit of this, I'll re-rank the worst "occurrences" of my sports life:

1. North Stars make official that they'll be moving to Dallas. (REMAINS #1 BECAUSE LOSING A TEAM IS THE ULTIMATE)
2. Wisconsin loses 2015 National Title Game.  That was it.  That was the last chance the program would ever have.  They had a 9-point lead in the second half and let two guards just take the game over.  As tough as it is to be a Vikings fan, there is at least an outside chance they'll win the championship in a 32-team league one day.  There is about a .000000000001% Wisconsin ever wins a National Title.
3. Wisconsin loses 2014 NCAA semifinal on that Harrison shot.  I think they would have had a decent chance to be UConn...hindsight has me feeling worse about this than those Vikings games; mainly for the reason shown above.  Wisconsin was a legit National Title contender in 2014 and 2015 due to a perfect storm of circumstances.  They never will be again.

5. Vikings lose 2009 NFC Title Game
6. Vikings lose 1998 NFC Title Game
7. Wisconsin, #1 in the country, loses in round one of 2000 NCAA hockey tournament

Last Saints game of the 1983 season was at home vs. the Rams. N.O. Was 8-7 and a win would result in their first winning season and first playoff appearance. I was 8 when I saw my first Saints game and was now 22, so it had been a wait, and I had season tickets so I was there. 

 

The Saints D held L.A.'s offense scoreless until the final play, but the Rams won 26-24. WTF, right? Well, their other 23 points came on a punt return, two pick sixes, and a safety - a combination most teams don't accomplish in a season, much less a game. 

 

I just stood at the railing on the upper deck when the game ended, in shock and disbelief, for close to a half-hour. 

 

This thread will surely be getting some input from Atlanta soon.

To be completely candid, it was the day the Nets traded Kenyon. The one and only time sports made me cry. I knew then and there the championship window shut faster than Nets could get out of NJ.

October 27, 2012: Second leg of the NASL Championship in St. Petersburg.  

 

A good number of Minnesota fans, including myself, had made the trip to Florida for the game.  The Stars had been league owned for two seasons, and at this point there were no clear leads on new owners for the team.  Surely a team that had won two consecutive titles and was building a fan base wouldn't be contracted, right?  This game changed that narrative a bit.  Minnesota took a 2-0 lead into this game from the first leg, but lost 3-1 on the night.  NASL didn't use the away goals rule, so the game went to extra time, then eventually penalties, where the Rowdies won.

 

It's bad enough to have to watch the other team lift the trophy in front of you; it's another level when you're not sure if you've just witnessed the last game before your team folds.  With the loss of the Thunder after the 2009 season (#FUDJ), this really stung.

 

Obviously, you all know that the story didn't end there; within a few months, the team had been purchased by Dr. Bill McGuire, renamed Minnesota United (*sigh*), and placed on the track towards bigger and better things.  But that time sitting on the berm (and with beers in the parking lot after) pondering the end of it all was rough.
