Worst Commentary You Can Remember

Lights Out

Recommended Posts

Inspired by the other commentary-related thread.

This thread could pretty much be filled with Joe Buck's bland, emotionless commentary, but this call really sticks out to me in terms of pure awfulness:

One of the greatest plays in Super Bowl history, and he makes it sound like a normal throw and catch in preseason.

There's far worse commentary out there, but for a guy who's the A-list 1-team top-dog hyphenated-title of broadcasters, he does a deplorable job in sports that aren't baseball.

Because it's not his team, the Cowboys!

Chris Berman is now firmly in the territory of self-parody. Really any of the ESPN NFL guys are atrocious.

As far as self-parody, Mark Jackson is nothing more than a Mark Jackson soundboard. "Hand down, man down" even if the defender is face guarding the shooter. As soon as he said "who, what, when, where, Kawhi Leonard!" the TV was on mute for the rest of the Finals.

Also, anything that Gus Johnson has done.

Gus Johnson is great.

I've never liked Bob Costas' call of the Braves winning the World Series in 95.

"and the team of the 90's has its world championship"

1995 was the fifth world series of the decade so it was far too early to make a declaration of who the team of the decade was, the Blue Jays had already won two so to that point so if anybody was the team of the 90's it was them, and how can you anoint a team as the team of the decade when they previously didn't have a championship? I also don't like it because I can just see Costas sitting at the desk in his Atlanta hotel room with wads of crumpled paper in and around the trash can as he tries to come up with the perfect line for the game. It sounds so preplanned.

Anytime Tim McCarver went into Captain Obvious mode.

1999 Mets announcer Fran Healy was a roader the complete opposite of a homer in that he openely rooted for the Mets to lose.

Some examples, "The Braves are Hipper because they got Chipper" "The Mets just can't keep up with the Joneses" "Dale Sveum is Swell aftre a walk off homer against the Mets" There are many others including "Can of Corn Taste so sweet Mets go down 1-2-3"

I can't remember anything specific but it was pretty horrible to listen to Bill Walton announce an Arizona game while his son was playing.

Could have been because I was rooting for the team Luke was playing against but it was auditory torture for me.

The ESPN NFL guys are the absolute worst. I'm not into football so I'm not exposed to them often, usually only if I'm at some restaurant and it's on the TV, but I can't believe that there's anyone out there who finds them geniunely entertaining. I saw one segment that was like their version of Shaqtin-a-fool or whatever it is, only their's was "Come on, man!" ... uhhhhh.... yeah, guy talk!! Guys love this stuff!! Kill it with fire.

I actually do watch the NBA though, and was mighty sad when Mark Jackson came back to the booth. He :censored:ing stinks.
