Nike VS. Series

Hi guys! I’m exciting to start sharing this personal project with the community. These designs have been in the works since April and I’m finally at the point where I’m happy with all of the work that I’ve done. This is easily the concept that I’ve enjoyed working on the most during my time on these boards so I hope you guys enjoy it. Despite the fact that this concept is “finalized” in my mind I am still very open to critiques and criticism. There are always areas that can be improved and the members of this community tend to have some great ideas, so let me know what you think.

Taking inspiration from Nike’s widely praised work for the Ohio State Buckeyes football program in the 2012 and 2013 seasons, the Nike VS. series aims to create modern interpretations of classic and timeless uniforms. These uniforms will be showcased and pitted against each other in some of the country’s most heated rivalry games during the 2014 season. The goal being to draw attention to the long and storied history of each rivalry while acknowledging the modern progression that has occurred. For some schools this will entail a refreshing take on a look they have worn for decades. While for others these uniforms will take their inspiration from teams of the past.

Release Schedule

Oregon VS Oregon State 7/28

Florida State VS Miami 8/1

Alabama VS LSU 8/4

Oregon Ducks

The Inspiration

XiilKEK.png

By taking inspiration from teams of the past and applying it to Oregon’s current brand elements a tasteful and eye catching look has been created. The classic yellow/green/yellow uniform combination has been used featuring the Ducks’ modern wing design on the shoulders. As the wings approach the sleeves they take the form of the classic striping pattern that once adorned Oregon’s uniforms. The number font is an updated and stronger version of the font featured in the original Nike rebranding of the program; inspired by the shape of the classic O logo. A simple stripeless helmet has been used, putting all of the attention on the O. The striping scheme from the jerseys has been carried over onto the pants in order to create a cohesive look that harkens back to Oregon’s uniform history.

Oregon State Beavers

The Inspiration

RVtlOv9.png

While strongly inspired by the uniforms worn by the famous “Giant Killers” team, this Beavers uniform also has some modern flair. The historic striping pattern has been altered to feature both a bark pattern* and angular cuts to represent the image of a tree after a beaver has gnawed through its trunk. This imagery is meant to be symbolic of the way that the giant killers cut down some of the biggest opponents in the country at the time, just as beavers topple some of the largest trees in the northwest. The drop shadow numbers are a slight nod to arguably the most successful team in the program’s history, the 20000 Fiesta Bowl champions.

*Oddly enough I had this uniform finished about a month before the Oklahoma alternate release. Briefly considered ditching this for something else, but I liked the design a bit too much to part with it.

Damn, both those are incredible. Absalout stroke of genius turning the wings into stripes, perfect combo of old and new.

I love the wood pattern (actually makes sense for them) and cut outs in the stripes.

Although I understand where the inspiration comes from both number font seem to fall short. I never liked the original number font thqt nike gave Oregon, it never seemed very "sporty" and neither does this one. I'm not sure why I dont like states but I feel something else could fit better

Honestly....terrible.

Terribly terrific! My sense of humor is amazing I bet you all laughed at that.

In all seriousness. For college I think these are really well thought out and executed. Not only that but they look good doing it. Even if I hate that Oregon St, logo.

And finally, an Oregon concept that doesn't use the duck wing twice in the design (helmet and sleeves).

Fantastic work on the template (no, I'm not asking for it). I love the wood striping for OrSU, especially the chewed tree. Very nice touch!

I also just noticed that you were able to get the collar design in for the Beavs as well. With this template, it is hard to do, but you nailed it!

Hate to be 'that guy', but it's too bad you're only doing these six teams. I would've liked to have seen a possible Bucks-Michigan State matchup. I will be checking in often

I think they are fantastic. Oregon has done so much, I'm sure it was difficult to come up with something that would be fresh and new. You've done it. The wood pattern for Oregon State is a great idea. Have you considered doing that same pattern in the orange part of the numbers?

I want to find a fault in these. I want to nitpick you to death about what's wrong. Seriously, I love just about everything these. I'll go down saying that yellow-green-yellow is Oregon's best look. OSU is a textbook modern spin on a traditional uniform. 9.5/10.

Awesome work on both. First of all, that photorealistic template is out of this universe. If you created it yourself, very, very well done. Oregon looks great. Making the wings into stripes was very clever, and I like the return of the classic number font. (I think the basketball team still uses it.) Oregon state looks really good as well. I like the wood pattern and teeth marks, and I'm a fan of the numbers. My only complaint is the contrasting cuffs on both uniforms. It doesn't work with the sleeve striping.

REALLY looking forward to the next two matchups.

Great stuff all around. I'm always a fan of the original green/yellow for Oregon and this is done with a nice modern twist to the design elements. Also thoroughly enjoy the Ore St pant stripe mimicking the chewed-up tree.

Looking forward to more matchups. I'll also echo the sentiment to see UofM some time in the series.

Holy...

Oregon State's is absolutely beautiful, what a huge upgrade over what they're currently wearing! I like Oregon's too, although I'm not too big of a fan of the number font you went with. Great concepts and a great start to this series! You should expand the series to more than just 3 match ups, but either way this is awesome. If I may ask, where did you get the realistic template you are using?

Both of these are absolutely beautiful. As a huge oregon fan, I believe your execution on the ducks' uniform is nearly perfect in blending the past with the current looks of the team. My only gripe would be the number font. It looks too similar to washington IMO and would much rather see the font that is used now.

I'm truly floored by these two designs. Like said above, Oregon's wing/stripes are well done. They fit the new template very well too. I love how everything is so well thought out, and none of it has the "let's do this, come up with an explanation afterwards" feeling to it. And I love Oregon State's current look, but I'd go for that concept any day.

I'm truly excited for the rest of this series and hate that we'll probably only see these 6 teams. I really hope you get to working on some more. These are easily the best concepts on the board. Well done!

There something of a stroke of genius in just these 2 concepts. You could close the thread right now and I'd go home happy that there is yet quality work on these boards.

But if I have to nitpick one thing it's that the green hue in your flat Oregon set did not translate well to the 3d model. Something about that brighter, more yellowish green is not as appealing imo.

To just echo pretty much everyone's sentiment, these are fantastic. I love to return to the bright green and yellow for Oregon. It's such a great color combo and one I think they ignore too much. Mimicking the sleeve stripes in the wing/feather pattern is a stroke of genius. For Oregon State, another great look. The chewed tree pant stripe is another genius idea. The ONLY thing I don't care for with either of these is the drop shadow. But that's really just a personal preference....I've never liked dropped shadows. But given the history with OSU, it makes sense to include it.

Can't wait to see the Bama/LSU match-up. It looks like you'll be using the newly modernized tiger head logo. I have a vector version of it if you need it. Just let me know.
