Seattle Lumberjacks NHL Expansion Concept

Recommended Posts

Greetings everyone,

This is my first post, so I apologize if I don't have all the bases covered. This is a concept for an NHL expansion/relocation to Seattle. I chose the name Lumberjacks for two reasons: 1) to pay tribute to the region's first major industry (logging) and 2) I wanted to stay away from the Metropolitans/Metros name, as I've already seen some great concepts for that nickname and wanted to try something different.

I would love to add an alternate jersey to the mix at some point. Let me know what you think!

I like the 'moving' feeling coming from the primary tomahawk logo. I would try to add more though. Maybe streaks coming out of the back of the tomahawk and the 'shield' it's in just to give it that extra striking motion feel.

Also awesome template ;)

The weird shape of the crest logo is throwing me off a little bit. I would think about maybe making that excellent buzzsaw logo the primary, but thats just me.

Another couple nitpicks not really about your logos or unis is that I feel that color combo may be a little over used for Seattle and the pacific northwest. Also it looks pretty familiar to the Timbers just a little south in Portland.

Other than that I really like it. It's a great idea and presentation.

Welcome to the boards! Hope to see some more from ya.

I like it, great first post for sure, its refreshing! I think the only thing that's bugging me is the lack of white or some other separation colour in the logo - at least to separate the axe from the triangular swoosh in the background. I like how the stripping flows like that of the logo.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, much appreciated!

The primary is the weakest of any of your designs, that's disappointing. The image itself is clunky, and lacks any sort of iconic image. The ax blade doesn't have enough contrast and the "arrowhead" background area is too distracting. The ax is going one way, the arrow is half outline then shoots off in another direction. Your secondary and alternate are far better compared to the primary. Color-wise, Navy and lime green fine, but there needs to be a better contrasting color paired with the lime green. The current other green you have is a little muddy and blends into lime green, try and find a why to fix that accent color.

Jerseys feel a little too Buffaslug meets anaheim ducks. And the motto on the billboard "Get Jacked" is fine, but lose the word "for" it's unnecessary as "NHL Hockey" already implies it. Also lose the dividing line between the motto and logo, again, not needed.

Thanks for taking the time to give me your thoughts, GoNordiques. A couple of questions for you:

  • What do you mean when you say the axe image is not iconic? I feel that it IS iconic--it's an axe, which symbolizes hard work, toughness and grit. Do you feel the axe itself is not iconic or is it the way I've treated it in the design?
  • Also, can you go into more detail on why you think the axe lacks contrast? How would you go about adding contrast to it?

Please don't take these questions as being defensive or not appreciating your CC...I'm just trying to get a better sense of where you're coming from because you obviously know what you're talking about.

I like 90% of it. The only part I'm lukewarm on is the primary logo. I think the shield around the axe takes away from the sharpness of it. It's not evident what the logo is until you know its the lumberjacks. Maybe try and incorporate an S around an axe? Just retool the primary and you have a great concept.

What I mean by iconic, the logo is hard to read as lumberjacks or Seattle. Sure it's and ax head which by the angle is very hard to read as such. As for the contrast, do the squint test. Squint your eyes and you'll see the greens blur together and it just becomes a shape/blob of green.

Cool, thanks for clarifying. You make a good point. I have some earlier iterations of the design where I used the dark blue to fill in the shading in the axe. Perhaps I can revisit that. I think I'll revisit the entire primary logo to make it better, since that's where this concept lacks the most.

The tricky part is, I don't want to add any trees or wood to the design, since an axe paired with trees sort of conveys destruction of said trees, and I wanted to avoid that sentiment. I like the idea of incorporating an 'S' or maybe an 'SL' to the primary.

Again, appreciate your feedback!

As much as I love navy and neon for Seattle teams, they seem like really strange colors for a team called the lumberjacks. I'd expect a more earthy color scheme instead like burgundy and green.

The primary is a bit weak, but I like using the buzzsaw as a roundel in the secondary. Maybe utilize a similar idea in the primary instead of the motion-shape?

Excellent point about the color, but let me shed some light on why I chose navy/bright green as the color palette. First off, I wanted to go with a color scheme that was not already present in the NHL. Green and burgundy, while it does tie in more closely to the name (along with paying tribute to the original Metropolitans color scheme), is already used by the Minnesota Wild. Secondly, of the several remaining palettes I tried with the concept, this one seemed to look and fit with the city of Seattle the best.

I'm still open to new color ideas though, and I might revisit some other combinations as I tweak things.

The shape of the logo looks like a tilted version of the Ducks' logo, and there's not much supporting elements to the set.

Don't change the secondary, but the primary needs to be either redone or reset.

Uniforms, on the other hand, don't look all that great. Too much blank spots everywhere. Try to fill those in.

Thanks! I will be tweaking the primary soon, when I have some free time. And I do plan on tweaking the uniforms as well; along with increasing the size of the current hem/cuff designs, I am also going to try out a few more designs to spice them up. I'll post updates when I finish them.

Thanks to everyone for your comments and feedback...this has been a great first experience posting on these boards and I hope to make it a regular activity for me.
