Wisconsin yelps; Waukee agrees to remove its flying W

For second time in a decade, school hunts for logo

Waukee schools must spend an undetermined amount of money to create a new logo for everything from uniforms to the "W" logo carved out of stone in front of the district administration building if officials wish to avoid a legal battle.

Waukee school officials have been told by the University of Wisconsin that the two schools' W's look too much alike and that the university owns all rights to a trademarked W logo.

The Waukee Warriors' purple-and-gold W was created about a decade ago after the Iowa Department of Education told the district it should not use an image of an American Indian as a school symbol.

Last school year, students in Waukee schools voted on a new mascot - the Spartan Warrior. It was not meant to replace the W logo.

The Waukee W logo combined the University of Wisconsin and the University of Washington logos, school officials said.

"We're not going to intentionally break the law, and if we're in violation, we're going to change it," said Waukee Superintendent David Wilkerson.

He said the "flying" W will be removed over five years. The W has already been removed from the district's Web site, and coaches have been told to keep the logo off new uniforms. The W can be seen on district vehicles, parking signs, letterheads, T-shirts, and the high school gymnasium floor. As for what will happen to the W rock in front of the administration building, Wilkerson said he didn't know.

A letter sent to Wilkerson on Sept. 20 from the Collegiate Licensing Co., which represents the University of Wisconsin, said Waukee's W logo is nearly identical to the trademark used by the university. Consumers could mistakenly believe Wisconsin has give Waukee permission to use its trademark, which it hasn't, the letter said.

Waukee senior Sejla Rekic, 17, said she was disappointed the district has decided to change its W.

"What's in a W? Who is that offending?" Rekic said. "I think we shouldn't have to change it."

Cindy Van Mater, director of licensing for the University of Wisconsin in Madison, said Waukee's logo was brought to her attention through a company the school is using to purchase class rings. Van Mater said the university has pressured 20 schools to change their logos in the past three years after finding they looked too much like the Wisconsin trademark.

Waukee junior Jeff Getting, 16, said he wasn't bothered by the change. "We could come up with something that really defines who we are," Getting said.

Wilkerson said that, after speaking to the school district's attorney, he did not think the district will legally challenge the university.

"We could try, but it's a trademarked W, and our chances aren't very good," Wilkerson said. "It just doesn't make sense to spend a lot of money on our attorney fees."

School officials will seek student input, possibly through a design class project or submissions from sixth- through 12th-grade students, in creating a new logo.

Pat Foley, president of the Waukee Athletic Booster Club, said school officials should challenge the move.

"I just hope that the school administration and school board is investigating this to the fullest without just giving in," Foley said. "I would encourage at least a fight."

Yeah a school here in Michigan got hit hard by Wisconsin. I didn't go to that school, nor know anyone that does but it was in the paper sometime last year. School was Lapeer West and they've changed since then.

Hmmm...

Why is it always Wisconsin that's getting ripped off? Aren't there any high schools interested in stealing a good logo? :P

I wish I had a picture of it, but a middle school here uses the Dallas Mavericks horse head alt logo. They changed the colors and depending on the sport they changed the ball in the background.

This should blow some minds. I present ...

Woodbridge High (VA) Vikings

It's the Badgers W, plus the Vikings old viking-head, in Packers colors. If normal logo ripoffs are like simple theft, then the Woodbridge Vikings are like stealing the tools to commit a theft of an already-stolen thing. If Danny Ocean stole the Mona Lisa, and I had to steal a harrier jumpjet to steal it from him to sell it to the Russian mob, that would be like the Woodbridge Vikings. I keep trying to persuade my wife, a Wisconsin alum, to report Woodbridge, but she doesn't like the motion-W and hopes that its ubiquitous theft drives the Badgers to change their logo.

Personally, I think that the fact that it seems to be the most-stolen logo in all of sports is solid evidence that it's a terrific logo. B)

That's not a bad idea for "Ocean's Fourteen," actually.

Glad to see I'm not the only alum who feels that way.
