My NHL Redesign

Thanks for the input on the Isles; I know there were some issues with some of the details on the logos, but I think the way I did them originally still holds up the best.

#20: New York Rangers

Logo.png

No major changes here at all for the Blueshirts. Slight update to the (seldom-used) logo and a new wordmark.

My main goals for the uniforms were: 1) Keep the red and blue separated with white wherever possible (I don't like the interaction of them side by side); and 2) Keep the striping consistent throughout the individual uniforms and the set. So I took their basic blue/white/red/white/blue striping and used that exact formula everywhere. It's on the shoulders, sleeves, waist, and socks. That also means that the blue stripes disappear on the blue sweater. It does make the white sweater look a little bit busy, but I still think there's enough negative space to let everything breathe.

Two issues: First, you'll notice that I dropped the pants stripes. I was originally going to put them on there, but they had to be so small to work that it was just becoming a mess. Also, I really wish I could have separated the blue from the red on the white sweater's numbers and letters. Alas, this just made everything too detailed. So I very reluctantly left them as you see.

For the alternate, I went back to the fantastic Lady Liberty logo, but updated the type, and changed the colors to include a softer "steel" blue instead of navy. The jersey is a bit odd, and I'm sure it will bring back bad memories of the Burger King to some of you. But I wanted a different look, and I wanted to keep that same diagonal feel from the home and away set; that diagonal is the most distinctive thing about the Rangers to me. I did a version with the stripe only on the front (starting over the shoulder and coming across to terminate at the back bottom left), and I'm still not sure if I like that version or the one I posted better.

I don't think the Devils' organization or fans would support this change, nor would that of the Rangers'. :P

hahaha yes you might want to fix that. :P

EDIT: OH by the way I also agree that the sash should be removed, though it is unique, it doesn't really go along with the rest of the set.

And why not use the Ranger's crest on the home and away? The diagonal lettering looks okay but I think the crest would be better.

#19: New York Islanders

Logo.png

I wanted to go in a different direction with the Isles, because I feel that their name lends itself to all kinds of different imagery that their current logo doesn't come close to touching. I started playing with lighthouse ideas, but those have been done over and over, so I went with an anchor, which allowed me tuck the N and Y in there snuggly. I added a slightly bluish gray to the color scheme for depth (especially in the logo and wordmark), and I think it also has an Atlantic seawater/sky feel to it. For the wordmark and type, I'm using an old school block face.

I started to make the uniforms more modern, with curvy piping to match the curve on the anchor. But after looking at the finished product, it was obvious that the piping was unnecessary and didn't really connect with the straight striping. So I've given the Isles a classic look, somewhat based on their old double-stripe pattern. I reworked the 4-stripe logo, encircling it with type and rope, which I think helps give it an anchor (pun completely intended) so it isn't just four stripes floating.

For the alternate logo, I kept the anchor but circled it with type and rope (this is where that idea originated; I moved it to the stripe logo later on), and put it on an orange jersey. I used lots of blue on the alternate jersey so that (hopefully) it wouldn't be orange overkill.

I dislike the Ilses, but this is an awesome set. Great stuff.

I love the hell out of that revised Rangers shield. Once you adjust your brain--I mean, it is a pretty established logo--it looks infinitely better to use the sweater lettering in the logo and unify the identity. The shield has been tweaked a lot over the years, so it wouldn't be sacrilege to use it. I'm so impressed.

EDIT: Could you try taking the notches out of the side beneath "New York"? See if that makes it a little less jarring for people too used to the old shield.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

D'oh! Nice catch; it's fixed.

Some great stuff here. Looking forward to seeing what you will do with Ottawa, maybe even post any secondary logos you create in full size? :P

I'd love to be able to do this, and for some that have a lot of detail, I will (such as the Wild alternate; and I'll probably be doing it for the Senators alternate). But all these .pngs are beginning to take up a lot of space on the computer and the photobucket account, which is why I'm trying to conserve some space.

I'll definitely look at it.

I don't get it...

It used to say "New Jersey Devils" at the bottom.

Anyway, really nice job on the latest one. My only gripe is that the third jersey doesn't really flow with the rest of the set. I actually like the diagonal sash idea, but I'm not a huge fan of the colors, and I think that you should have it match the other two jerseys.

You've pretty much achieved perfection on the last two; the Islanders' new logo is great, and I love the addition of silver. I don't like the alternate so much, as the striping pattern makes it look like a bib, but impressive nonetheless. The way you've standardized the Rangers' striping is impeccable. You've taken one of the most storied franchises in hockey and made them better. The alt looks more like a soccer jersey, and the navy looks a tad washed out, but it contrasts nicely with the home and road and is certainly unique. Nice work.

My only gripe with this logo is that the shield looks too fat. With the notches, I think it would look better if the bottom half was thinner.

For a logo that's supposed to be a shield it just looks a little too square. Perhaps try making it a more of a vertical rectangle?

Good job with the Rangers set. I did something similar with the shield logo recently (from my NHL 3rd Jersey Project), so I obviously like the idea. No complaints about the home and road jerseys. Nice updates. As for that alternate, it's pretty cool. Not my favorite Rangers design, but cool. Nice job overall.

Thanks to everyone for feedback on the Blueshirts.

Like I said earlier, the diagonal RANGERS lettering is, to me, quintessential NY Rangers. Also, I don't actually like the way their shield looks on the jersey. This is especially true for the blue jersey: with so much blue in the shield, it needs either a very thick white outline or a white and a red outline, and neither of those really looked good to me.

My only gripe with this logo is that the shield looks too fat. With the notches, I think it would look better if the bottom half was thinner.

For a logo that's supposed to be a shield it just looks a little too square. Perhaps try making it a more of a vertical rectangle?

I started my logo by tracing their current shield, so it should be pretty much the same. However, I did decide to remove the notches, so maybe having the straight vertical sides will help thin it visually.

In the end, I decided to keep the "sash" on the alternate. Despite what I feared, there didn't seem to be a huge outrage about it. I really just like the way it looks, especially as an alternate to be worn maybe 4-6 times a year. Honestly, I'm glad the Rangers are over. That identity gave me fits trying to unify the logo, chest lettering, and jersey striping. The next team should be posted soon.

I think that looks much better.

p.s. I can't wait to see what you do with Vancouver. I think they're one of the hardest teams to re-design.
